Supreme Court Edition, Chatrie v. United States: Can police use cellphone location data to catch suspects?

Police in Richmond, Virginia, had no leads after an armed bank robbery in 2019, so they got a “geofence” warrant — a novel type of warrant that allowed them to request Google location data from all devices that had been near the bank around the time of the crime. That data helped authorities identify Okello Chatrie, whom they arrested and charged in federal court. But Chatrie argues that the geofence warrant violated his Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. Host Laura Jarrett speaks with the ACLU’s Nathan Freed Wessler, who won the precedent-setting case Carpenter v. United States about whether the police’s use of digital dragnets is consistent with the Fourth Amendment. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Inside the DNC’s 2024 Election Report Quagmire, and the Pushback against the DOJ’s ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’

After months of pressure, the Democratic National Committee has released an independent review of how Democrats lost so big in the 2024 election. NBC News’ national political reporter Ben Kamisar explains why it took so long — and why the DNC still isn’t owning the contents of the report. Then, NBC News’ justice reporter Ryan J. Reilly breaks down why police officers involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Democratic lawmakers and even some members of the GOP are pushing back against the Department of Justice’s new $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund — and what it would mean for tax audits of President Donald Trump, his family and his businesses. Then, with a new Ebola outbreak growing in central Africa, Dr. Christopher Lee of Resolve to Save Lives shares his experience responding to the 2014 Ebola crisis in Guinea — and how changes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization could affect the ability of global health authorities to react this time around.
