Epic | Week 3

The story from 1 Kings 18 reveals a profound truth about our spiritual lives: we cannot waver between two opinions. The Israelites wanted both God and Baal, trying to have their cake and eat it too. But God was calling them to stand firm and choose. This ancient story mirrors our modern struggle. We're okay with God on Sunday, but Monday through Saturday, we often worship at the altars of success, control, money, and comfort. These false gods make promises they cannot keep, offering security and fulfillment they can never deliver. The message challenges us to examine what we're truly worshiping and reminds us that when God's presence and power are absent, people always suffer. The climactic moment when fire falls from heaven after Elijah pours precious water over the sacrifice teaches us that when we surrender what is most precious to us, God consumes it with His presence and fills us with something we cannot manufacture ourselves.

This powerful message takes us into the ancient story of the Ark of the Covenant found in 1 Samuel chapters 4 and 5, revealing profound truths about God's presence and our worship. We witness the Israelites suffering devastating defeat even after bringing God's ark into battle, and then watch as the captured ark wreaks havoc in the Philistine temples, causing their idol Dagon to fall and break before God's presence. Are we bowing to comfort, relationships, appearance, success, or even good things that have taken God's rightful place? The Philistines foolishly kept sending the ark away rather than abandoning their powerless idol, and we're forced to ask: how often do we push God away to keep our sin comfortable? This message reminds us that there's nowhere we can hide from God's presence, but more importantly, there's nowhere we can go that's beyond His grace and redemption. Through the lens of Jesus and the cross, even our defeats become part of God's victorious plan.

This powerful exploration of Exodus 14 reminds us that our God is never caught off guard by our circumstances. Before Pharaoh's army even appeared on the horizon, God had already positioned His people exactly where they needed to be—not in frantic escape, but in deliberate preparation. The Israelites were instructed to camp by the sea, to wait, to settle in the very place that would seem most vulnerable when the enemy arrived. This challenges our understanding of divine protection: God doesn't always remove us from dangerous situations, but He positions Himself between us and our enemies. The message calls us to examine a profound truth—the only thing we should truly fear is stepping outside God's will. When we're walking in His plan, even our most terrifying moments are part of His story, and He has already written the ending. The Israelites forgot their place in God's narrative, panicking despite having visible evidence of His presence in the pillar of cloud and fire. We do the same thing, don't we? We have the Holy Spirit living within us, we have the complete Scripture, yet we panic when trials come. This passage invites us to stand still, to hold our peace, and to watch God fight battles we could never win on our own. The question becomes: are we willing to play our part in God's story well, whether that part includes blessing or difficulty, knowing that He is ultimately in control?

This powerful message centers on Jesus as the cornerstone of both our individual lives and the church, drawing from Ephesians 2:19-22 and 1 Peter 2:6-8. The cornerstone metaphor reveals something profound: in ancient construction, the cornerstone was the first stone laid, perfectly cut with exact angles, determining the position and alignment of every other stone in the building. If the cornerstone was off even slightly, the entire structure would lean or collapse. This is exactly who Jesus is for us. He brings alignment to our lives, setting the boundaries and direction for everything we build. We cannot pick and choose which teachings to follow or which parts of Scripture to accept. The Word is not just containing truth, it is truth itself. When we try to fit Jesus into our cultural preferences or personal opinions, we miss the point entirely. He is the immovable foundation, and we must align ourselves to Him, not the other way around. The challenge we face is that Jesus will never conform to worldly culture. He was offensive in His time and remains offensive today to those who resist His authority. But for those who believe, He is precious and becomes the unshakeable foundation that supports us through every storm. When everything else in life shifts, changes, or falls away, careers, money, relationships, even our health, the cornerstone remains. Building our lives on Christ means we can withstand any wind or flood that comes our way.

Drawing from Nehemiah 4:17-18, we're reminded that the Israelites rebuilt Jerusalem's wall with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, working and defending simultaneously. The message confronts a crucial truth - we're always building something, whether we realize it or not. Our marriages, families, careers, and spiritual lives are either being constructed with purpose or deteriorating through neglect. The real enemy isn't the people around us - our spouses, children, coworkers, or neighbors - but the spiritual forces that seek to destroy what God is building through us. When we waste energy fighting the wrong battles, we miss the opportunity to defend what truly matters. This isn't just about personal growth; it's about participating in something bigger than ourselves. The church isn't a building we attend but a body we belong to, and our active participation transforms everything. The question isn't whether we'll build something with our lives, but whether what we're building will last and honor God.
