Zeg, gisteren sprak ik eindelijk even met mijn nieuwe buurvrouw. Ze komt uit Syrië en is nu dus volop bezig met Nederlands leren. Hi Maarten! Hey, yesterday I finally spoke with my new neighbor for a bit. She's from Syria and is now fully busy learning Dutch. Maarten: Oh, leuk! Ja, dat is een hele onderneming. Moet ze ook inburgeren? Anna: Oh, nice! Yes, that's quite an undertaking. Does she also have to integrate? Lisa: Ja, precies! Daar hadden we het dus over. Het klonk best intensief allemaal, met examens en zo. Op een bepaald niveau, meestal A2. Anna: It consists of different parts. You have language proficiency, of course: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. At a certain level, usually A2. Maarten: Daarnaast heb je een examen over Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij, KNM heet dat. Dan leer je over de overheid, de geschiedenis, de omgangsvormen... Dus niet alleen de taal, maar ook hoe alles hier werkt. Dat lijkt me best veel informatie om te verwerken. Wow. So not just the language, but also how everything works here. That seems like a lot of information to process. Maarten: Zeker, want tegelijkertijd moet je ook gewoon je leven opbouwen hier. Een huis vinden, werk, een sociaal netwerk. Nowadays, people have to arrange and pay for much more themselves. Lisa: Echt? Dat maakt het er niet makkelijker op. Zeker niet als je nog geen baan hebt. En je moet het natuurlijk ook halen voor je verblijfsvergunning, toch? Really? That doesn't make it any easier. Especially if you don't have a job yet. And you also have to pass it for your residence permit, right? Maarten: Ja, vaak wel. Het is een voorwaarde voor een permanente vergunning. Dat geeft natuurlijk wel extra druk. Anna: Yes, often. Het gaat niet alleen om een diploma, maar om je hele toekomst in een land. Phew, I can imagine those exams are incredibly stressful then. It's not just about a diploma, but about your entire future in a country. Maarten: Dat is waar. Daarom is het ook zo belangrijk dat er goede begeleiding is. Niet alleen taalles, maar ook hulp bij het vinden van je weg in de maatschappij. Anna: That's true. That's why it's so important that there's good guidance. Not just language lessons, but also help with finding your way in society. Lisa: Absoluut. Mijn buurvrouw volgt lessen via een buurthuis. Daar ontmoet ze ook andere mensen. Dat sociale aspect lijkt me minstens zo belangrijk. Absolutely. My neighbor takes classes through a community center. She also meets other people there. That social aspect seems at least as important to me. Maarten: Jazeker. Omdat je de taal leert om te kunnen communiceren, is oefenen in de praktijk essentieel. Alleen uit een boekje leren is niet genoeg. Anna: Absolutely. Because you learn the language to be able to communicate, practicing in real life is essential. Just learning from a book isn't enough. Lisa: Nee, echt niet. Je moet het durven gebruiken. Ik ga haar zeker vaker uitnodigen voor een kopje koffie. Gewoon, om lekker te kletsen. No, really not. You have to dare to use it. I just cycled past Museumplein and saw a huge poster for a new exhibition at the Rijksmuseum. Immediately made me think of our previous conversation. Maarten: Oh ja, over kunst en cultuur. Ben je van plan om te gaan? Oh yes, about art and culture. Are you planning to go? Lisa: Ja, ik denk het wel! Maar ik bedacht me dat het echt lang geleden is dat ik in het Rijksmuseum zelf was. Jij? Yes, I think so! But it just occurred to me that it's been a really long time since I was at the Rijksmuseum itself. You? Maarten: Ik was er vorig jaar nog met mijn klas. Most group portraits back then were very static, everyone neatly in a row. Lisa: Oh, echt waar? Dat wist ik niet eens. Ik vind het soms wel een beetje overweldigend, het Rijks. Hoe komt dat, denk jij als ontwerper? Hmm, that's a good observation. Why do you think that is, as a designer? Lisa: Nou, ik denk dat de invloed van De Stijl, met een kunstenaar als Mondriaan, enorm is geweest. 'Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg'. Die mentaliteit zie je er echt in terug. Maarten: Ja, de beroemde Nederlandse nuchterheid. Misschien heeft het ook wel te maken met het Calvinisme van vroeger. Soberheid was een belangrijke waarde. Yes, the famous Dutch sobriety. Maybe it also has to do with the Calvinism of the past. Austerity was an important value. Lisa: Oh ja, dat zou zomaar eens kunnen! Dat alles functioneel moet zijn, zonder onnodige versiering. Dat zie je toch nog steeds in veel design? Oh yes, that could very well be! That everything has to be functional, without unnecessary decoration. You still see that in a lot of design, don't you? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Dus we zijn van de extreem gedetailleerde meesterwerken naar minimalistische stoelen gegaan. Een behoorlijke verandering. Actually, yes. You just mentioned a couple of interesting words, by the way. What exactly is the difference for you between the permanent 'collection' and an 'exhibition'? Lisa: Oh, goeie vraag. De collectie zijn alle kunstwerken die het museum zelf bezit, de permanente stukken zeg maar. Een tentoonstelling is tijdelijk, vaak rond een specifieke kunstenaar of een thema. Oh, good question. The collection consists of all the artworks the museum itself owns, the permanent pieces, so to speak. An exhibition is temporary, often centered around a specific artist or a theme. Lisa: Over de Gouden Eeuw. Al die schilderijen en die prachtige huizen langs de grachten in Amsterdam. Wauw, wat een rijkdom was dat, hè? About the Golden Age. All those paintings and those beautiful houses along the canals in Amsterdam. Wow, what wealth that was, right? Maarten: Ja, dat was een periode van enorme welvaart voor de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden. Yes, that was a period of enormous prosperity for the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Lisa: Precies! Maar hoe kwamen we eigenlijk zo rijk? Het was niet alsof we goudmijnen hadden of zo. Exactly! But how did we actually get so rich? It wasn't like we had gold mines or anything. They had a monopoly on the trade in spices like pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. That generated an incredible amount of money. Lisa: Wat een avontuur moet dat zijn geweest. Maandenlang op zo'n schip. Hoewel... het was vast ook heel zwaar en gevaarlijk. What an adventure that must have been. Months on such a ship. Although... it must have also been very tough and dangerous. Maarten: Absoluut. Maarten: Nou, heel simpel gezegd: je bouwt een dijk om een meer heen en dan pomp je al het water eruit met molens. En voilà, je hebt een polder. Nieuw land. Well, very simply put: you build a dike around a lake and then you pump all the water out with windmills. And voilà, you have a polder. New land. Lisa: Fantastisch. We zijn dus goed in handel drijven, mits we onze voeten droog houden. Gaat lekker zo. Fantastic. So we're good at trading, as long as we keep our feet dry. That's going well. Maarten: Haha, ja, dat is een goede samenvatting. Die twee dingen, waterbeheer en handel, hebben Nederland echt gevormd tot wat het nu is. Haha, yes, that's a good summary. Those two things, water management and trade, have really shaped the Netherlands into what it is today. Lisa: De hele Gouden Eeuw was dus niet mogelijk geweest zonder die kennis van water? Hoe zit dat dan? So the entire Golden Age wouldn't have been possible without that knowledge of water? How does that work then? Maarten: Nou ja, we hadden de beste havens en waren meesters in scheepsbouw. We bouwden snelle, efficiënte schepen voor die enorme vloot. Alles hing met elkaar samen. Well, we had the best harbors and were masters in shipbuilding. We built fast, efficient ships for that enormous fleet. Everything was connected. Lisa: Oké, dus het was een tijd van welvaart en innovatie. Maar het klinkt ook een beetje... hard? Okay, so it was a time of prosperity and innovation. But it also sounds a bit... harsh? Maarten: Dat was het ook. De VOC was zo machtig dat ze hun eigen leger hadden en oorlog mochten voeren om hun handel te beschermen. Dat is nu ondenkbaar voor een bedrijf. It was. The VOC was so powerful that they had their own army and were allowed to wage war to protect their trade. That's unthinkable for a company now. Lisa: Wauw.
