Episode 60: Eff Up & Fail Up: Who Really Pays for the Mess?

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2178045/fan_mail/new] Before we get into this episode, let me say this real quick. When Nikki and I sat down to record this, we went back and forth on where this episode even belonged. Was this a Teachers After Dark conversation… or a Ridgemont4’sFinest conversation? And truthfully, it ended up being a little bit of both. So just know… we were passionate. And when we get passionate, the line between platforms gets a little blurry. If you’re here for the cute, the polished, the “let’s keep it professional” teacher content… this might not be your episode. We were relaxed, we were honest, and yeah… a little bit of that Teachers After Dark energy slipped in. But the conversation?  Too important not to have. Because in this episode, we’re saying the quiet part out loud. We’re talking about what it really looks like to “eff up and fail up.” How some people can create chaos, make poor decisions, leave entire systems in disarray… and still walk away with a promotion, a new title, and a fresh start. Meanwhile, the most qualified people in the room?  They’re left holding the mop. We’re breaking down who gets grace, who gets consequences, and why accountability seems to disappear depending on who you are. From leadership roles that don’t make sense, to “interim” positions that never turn permanent, to emotional excuses that protect the wrong people—we’re unpacking all of it. And yes, we’re talking about race. Because whether people want to admit it or not… race is tied to accountability. This isn’t about one person.  It’s about a pattern. So if you’ve ever watched somebody crash a whole situation and still ride off into the sunset like nothing happened… go ahead and press play. And when it’s over, let us know your thoughts. Ep. 59 Michelle Williams: She Fought for Their Kids. Who Fought for Her?

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2178045/fan_mail/new] For the past two years, longtime Houston educator and union leader Michelle Williams has been locked in a high-profile fight with Houston ISD after repeatedly raising concerns about how the district’s new instructional model was affecting students — particularly emergent bilingual students and children receiving special education services, many of whom come from Houston’s large Hispanic community. A 26-year classroom veteran and president of the Houston Education Association, Williams spoke out about rigid lesson pacing, special education compliance concerns, and the pressure teachers faced trying to move through scripted lessons while students who needed additional support struggled to keep up. After filing complaints with the Texas Education Agency and publicly challenging district leadership, Williams was removed from the classroom, placed on home duty, and eventually faced termination proceedings — turning her advocacy into a two-year battle with the district. But this episode of Ridgemont4’sFinest – The Podcast Op-Ed explores a deeper question that grew out of that fight. If someone is willing to risk their career defending students — including a large Hispanic student population — why did many of the city’s Hispanic political and civic leaders remain silent when the backlash came? More broadly, the episode examines a pattern many people have noticed in advocacy spaces: Black women are often expected to stand on the front lines for everyone else. But when the consequences arrive… This episode unpacks the politics of advocacy, the expectations placed on Black women in public leadership, and the uncomfortable question of solidarity across communities. Because if Black women are expected to stand on the front lines for everyone else… who stands up for them? Support the show [https://cash.app/$Ridgemont4sFinest] Thanks for listening! Ep. 58 Disrupting the Status Quo: Dr. Letitia Plummer on Legacy, Justice, and the Fight for Harris County

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2178045/fan_mail/new] With the Tuesday election just days away, the future of Harris County hangs in the balance. In this high-stakes episode, we sit down with Dr. Letitia Plummer, the history-making former City Council member who resigned her seat to run for Harris County Judge. Dr. Plummer isn't your typical "establishment" politician. A Spelman alumna, practicing dentist, and small business owner, she carries a powerful civil rights lineage—her grandfather was a legendary lawyer who represented Muhammad Ali. But her path hasn't been easy. For the first time, she speaks deeply on how a public and painful custody battle transformed her from a healthcare professional into a fierce advocate for family and legal rights. In this episode, we dive deep into the issues that matter most to our community: The Crisis in our Schools: As families face the fallout of the HISD takeover and school closures, Dr. Plummer explains why she is willing to disrupt the system to bring youth mental health services directly into our classrooms. Dignity & Housing: From holding "slum-lords" accountable to her "worst-first" approach to infrastructure, find out how she plans to ensure Black neighborhoods are never again the last to receive help. Disruptor vs. Establishment: Why she is choosing to challenge political giants like former Mayor Annise Parker to give a voice to those the system has ignored. This isn't just another political interview—it’s a conversation about restoring dignity to our community and the power of the vote. Dr. Plummer has put her career on the line to fight for this office. Tune in to hear why she believes this Tuesday is a turning point for Harris County and why you cannot afford to stay home. The election is Tuesday. Your power is your vote. Listen now. www.drletitiaplummer.com [https://www.drletitiaplummer.com] Support the show [https://cash.app/$Ridgemont4sFinest] Thanks for listening! Ep. 57- The Power of an Informed Parent: Jessica’s Story

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2178045/fan_mail/new] In this episode, I sit down with Jessica Campos — a Houston mom who took on HISD, filed a TEA complaint, won, and is now teaching other parents how to advocate for their kids without fear. Jessica’s daughter wasn’t getting the services promised in her IEP, and after being ignored and pushed around, she did what most parents are scared to do: she held the district accountable. Today, she’s sharing her story, the barriers she faced, and the truth about the special education system that schools don’t always want parents to know. We also talk about the importance of parents — especially Spanish-speaking families — understanding their rights, recognizing when a school isn’t following the law, and knowing exactly what steps to take when something feels “off.” Jessica now offers classes to teach families how to navigate the TEA grievance process, how to document everything, and how to advocate with confidence. Her work is changing lives, and this conversation is one every parent should hear. If your child is in SPED or has a 504 plan, this episode is your reminder: You are not powerless. You are not overreacting. And you absolutely have the right to fight for the education your child deserves. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share this with a parent who needs it. Let’s Talk About Those TEA Investigation Letters

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2178045/fan_mail/new] In this mini episode, I’m breaking down the TEA investigation letters that so many Texas teachers have been receiving lately — the ones claiming you “may have engaged in conduct detrimental to the welfare of children” or “participated in a testing scheme.” I know how terrifying and confusing those words can sound when they show up in your inbox, so I want to help you understand exactly what this letter really means, what it doesn’t mean, and what your rights are. We’re going to slow things down and talk through what’s actually happening behind the scenes — because most teachers getting these letters haven’t been accused of any wrongdoing. I’ll explain what the different phrases mean, why that “flag” on your certificate was placed and then removed, and what steps you can take to protect yourself moving forward.
