This Monday on the Catholic Morning Show, Deacon Mark Campbell brings two compelling conversations that speak directly to where the Church meets culture in 2026. First, Fr. Basil Nixen — a Benedictine monk of the Monastery of San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy — joins the show to discuss his new book, The Last Communion of Saint Jerome, published by TAN Books. Fr. Nixen traces the historical and spiritual roots behind the famous Renaissance artistic tradition of Jerome receiving his final communion, showing that the legend — long dismissed by scholars — actually reflects authentic dimensions of Jerome's life: his fierce love for the Eucharist, his devotion to Scripture, his Marian piety, and his commitment to the purity of the faith. Fr. Nixen also draws out the profound connection Saint Jerome makes between knowledge of Scripture and reception of the Eucharist — famously captured in Jerome's own words: ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. A beautiful reflection for the week following the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and the upcoming consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. 📖 Pick up The Last Communion of Saint Jerome [https://tanbooks.com/products/books/the-last-communion-of-saint-jerome-the-eucharist-monasticism-and-priesthood-in-the-life-of-a-church-father/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]by Fr. Basil Nixen through TAN Books. Then, Catholic influencer and digital creator Ana Munley — host of the After Mass with Ana Munley podcast — sits down to discuss Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. Ana shares how the document challenged her own previous assumptions about the neutrality of technology, highlighting the Pope's insistence that technology always reflects the values of those who create, fund, and profit from it. She walks through the encyclical's themes of digital culture, the commercialization of human imagination, data mining, and the Church's call for Catholics to be active builders — not passive bystanders — in the digital world. As Ana puts it: we are called to rebuild Jerusalem, not construct another Tower of Babel. 🎙️ Find Ana Munley's podcast After Mass with Ana Munley wherever you get your podcasts, and follow her on Instagram and Facebook at @anamunley. 📻 Listen to the Catholic Morning Show weekdays at 7 AM Central on the Iowa Catholic Radio Network [https://www.IowaCatholicRadio.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]:  #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #SaintJerome #LastCommunion #TANBooks #Eucharist #CorpusChristi #SacredHeart #CatholicBooks #BenedictineMonk #MagnificaHumanitas #PopeLeoXIV #CatholicAI #ArtificialIntelligence #CatholicInfluencer #DigitalCatholicism #AfterMassWithAnaMunley #CatholicFaith #CatholicPodcast #DeaconMarkCampbell Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]! The Catholic Morning Show – 06/11/2026

On this storm-interrupted Thursday, Deacon Mark Campbell and Brady Grimm power through severe weather alerts across Iowa to deliver a full, faith-filled Catholic Morning Show. The episode opens with Deacon Randy Kiel unpacking the Sunday Ordinary Time readings — tracing Israel's covenant at Sinai in Exodus, Paul's message of new identity in Romans, and the unifying thread of God's faithful love throughout salvation history. Deacon Kiel preaches at Christ the King Parish on the south side of Des Moines this weekend. Des Moines Police Detective Craig Vasquez joins Deacon Mark in studio to share the story behind the annual community Rosary Rally outside the Des Moines Police Department. The event takes place this Saturday, June 14, at the west side of the building near the memorial, off East 1st and Court Avenue. Lawn chairs, rosaries, and prayer intentions are all welcome. The rally gathers citizens alongside police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and Des Moines clergy to pray together publicly for the city and state. Ed Van Buskirk — founder of IfYouLoveMe.com — continues the Ten Commandments series with the Seventh Commandment: You Shall Not Steal. Ed challenges listeners to look beyond the obvious and examine how we steal intangibles — reputation, credit, compliments withheld — and how covetousness at the root of stealing points back to disordered priorities and a lack of trust in God. Families and individuals can explore the full commandments series at GodsRecipe.org [http://godsrecipe.org/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]. Today marks the USCCB's Consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, live from the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe in Orlando at 4:00 PM Eastern on EWTN. You Shall Not Steal — The Seventh Commandment and the Call to Generosity with Ed Van Buskirk - 06/11/2026

Ed Van Buskirk, founder of IfYouLoveMe.com, joins Deacon Mark Campbell for week eight of the Ten Commandments series with a rich exploration of the Seventh Commandment: You Shall Not Steal. Ed opens by reframing the commandment entirely — rather than simply a rule against taking, it is an invitation into the greatness of generosity. When we look past what we shouldn't do and ask what we should do, this commandment calls us into joyful friendship and self-giving love. Key insights from the conversation: * Stealing intangibles — reputation, credit, a compliment withheld — can be more damaging than taking physical possessions * Covetousness and theft are rooted in a lack of trust in God's providence * Violating this commandment damages not only our relationship with others but our relationship with God * Generosity is the positive fulfillment of this commandment — and the antidote to covetousness * True harmony in society flows from trust, which is built through generous living Ed draws a powerful connection between the Seventh Commandment and the two greatest commandments — love of God and love of neighbor — showing how every act of theft, large or small, is a failure of both. 📖 Learn more and find resources for families and individuals: * GodsRecipe.org [http://godsrecipe.org/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] #TenCommandments #SeventhCommandment #YouShallNotSteal #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #CatholicPodcast #EdVanBuskirk #IfYouLoveMe #GodsRecipe #CatholicFaith #Generosity #CatholicFormation #MoralTheology #CatholicFamily #Evangelization Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]! Praying the Rosary with Des Moines Police — Community Rosary Rally with Detective Craig Vasquez - 06/11/2026

Detective Craig Vasquez of the Des Moines Police Department sits down with Deacon Mark Campbell to talk about faith, prayer, and the power of public witness. After experiencing profound personal grief — the loss of his nephew Ari — Detective Vasquez felt called by Our Lady to take up the rosary daily. That personal conversion became the seed of a community-wide Rosary Rally now held annually outside the Des Moines Police Department. Event Details: 📍 Des Moines Police Department — West side of the building, near the memorial 📌 Address: 25 East 1st Street, Des Moines, Iowa (corner of East 1st and Court Avenue) 📅 Saturday, June 14 🕗 Bring: lawn chair, rosary, bottle of water, and your prayer intentions The rally gathers Des Moines citizens alongside police officers, detectives, firefighters, EMS personnel, and local Catholic clergy to pray peacefully for the city, the state, and all those who serve on the front lines. Detective Vasquez reflects on how the Rosary and the Litany of the Sacred Heart offer officers a contemplative anchor — peace in the midst of the darkness and suffering first responders witness daily. aflevering The Angel of the Eucharist: Discovering Marie Estelle Harpin — J. Stephen Russell artwork

The Angel of the Eucharist: Discovering Marie Estelle Harpin — J. Stephen Russell

J. Stephen Russell, retired professor of medieval literature and Catholic author, joins The Catholic Morning Show to share the story behind Angel of the Eucharist, his English translation of the writings of Marie Estelle Harpin (1814–1841). Who Was Marie Estelle Harpin? Born in 1814 in Santos, France, Marie Estelle was a middle-class young woman who apprenticed as a seamstress. As a teenager, she fell deeply in love with Jesus in the Eucharist, a devotion that utterly transformed her life. Though she faced mockery and alienation early on, her village — and eventually her bishop — came to recognize the beauty and depth of her holiness. She died at only 27 years old. Her bishop ordered her letters and memoir collected and published; the book went through four French editions from the 1840s through the 1880s but was never translated into English until now. Why Has She Been Forgotten? Russell reflects that causes for sainthood can carry a political dimension, and that candidates from less prominent dioceses can be lost in the shuffle. Interest in Marie Estelle peaked in the late nineteenth century, with brief English and French biographies around 1900, before fading entirely. Her cause was recently revived when the French bishops voted to resume studying her life — the link Russell discovered that drew him into the project. Her Spirituality Marie Estelle's Eucharistic devotion was extraordinarily intense. With her pastor's permission, she would spend entire nights on her knees before the tabernacle. One of her most powerful quotes from the translation: "Seek the God of comforts, not the comforts of God." Russell notes that her prayer life was rooted in relationship, not petition — not "ordering at the pickup window," as he put it. Her Humanity Despite her profound holiness, Marie Estelle was deeply relatable: she loved to dance, desired pretty clothes she could never afford, and once nearly stole a trinket before returning it the same day out of conscience. Russell suggests she offers a rich model of Catholic femininity — someone who navigated real temptations while keeping her eyes fixed on Christ. Confirmation Moves to Sixth Grade in the Diocese of Des Moines — John Gaffney

John Gaffney, Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Des Moines, joins The Catholic Morning Show to unpack one of the most significant changes in sacramental preparation in the diocese in decades. Why the Change? The conversation began with a direct question from Bishop Johnson: is tenth grade the best place to confer confirmation? A diocesan task force — including clergy and laity from rural, suburban, and urban communities — analyzed data, surveyed parents and candidates, and studied what other dioceses across the country are doing. Two recommendations emerged: restored order (baptism, confirmation, and first Eucharist together, as at the Easter Vigil) and moving confirmation to sixth grade. Bishop discerned that the diocese was not yet ready for restored order, but moved forward with the sixth grade transition after extended prayer and discernment. The Discipleship Pathway The new model is not simply an age change — it is a complete rethinking of confirmation preparation structured around three phases: * Belonging and Identity — grounding candidates in their identity as beloved children of God before they encounter cultural pressures * Encounter — meeting Jesus and the Holy Spirit through Sacred Scripture and a mid-process retreat * Mission Readiness — launching sixth graders into active participation in the mission of the Church Parent and Sponsor Formation A parent formation component runs alongside the candidate process, acknowledging that parish faith formation time with young people is limited and that parents are the primary formators of faith. The Diocese is partnering with the Halo app, FORMED, and Our Sunday Visitor's Real + True program to provide aligned resources for parents to go deeper in their own faith. Dedicated sponsor resources are also being developed to equip confirmation sponsors for meaningful accompaniment. Timeline Resources are being assembled this summer, built on feedback from priests, deacons, faith formation leaders, and parents. Parish workshops will begin in the fall of 2026.
