Welcome to The Feed from Geek Mountain podcast, Episode 105! One of the most common tropes in video games is most often that really powerful item that you can only use once. You feel like a demonic powerhouse for only a brief moment in time only to go back to your normal self shortly afterward. Other times, you may hoard these items for a rainy day or an emergency when ultimately you forget to use it at all. Sometimes you may even save it for that epic final boss fight. Regardless of how you use it or lack thereof, it's powerful and one-time use is a common trope. As some of the biggest anime are coming out in 2022, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, Shield Hero, Overlord, My Hero Academia, etc etc, we often overlook many of its literary shortcomings and only praise what they do well. Everything is open to criticism (even JoJo) and one of the most popular critiques of anime are its heavy use of tropes. From specific character archetypes like cute lolis to more nuanced literary devices such as deus ex machina, tropes remind us that nothing is original and writers can be overly lazy.
