Episode 17: Why are Anthropologists Needed in DEI?

Join us in listening to this podcast episode recorded live at the American Anthropological Association 2025 Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Lucy, Missy, and Alex discuss why it is important for anthropologists to blend theory and practice in their engagement with diversity, equity, and inclusion. They tell us why we cannot only critique DEI, especially at a moment when it is under attack. Rather, they explain why anthropologists are best equipped to intervene meaningfully to create better and more impactful DEI. Notes: * Lorbiecki, Anna, and Gavin Jack. episode Episode 15: Why Is Cultural Competency No Longer Enough? artwork

Episode 15: Why Is Cultural Competency No Longer Enough?

This episode focuses on a popular topic in DEIB and generally culture-change, which is cultural competence vs cultural humility. Why do we need cultural reflexivity instead? Today, cultural competence models include cultural humility and have about 3 main components in place - awareness (of self), knowledge (of others), and skills (e.g. conflict resolution). We advocate for cultural reflexivity in its place  as it encapsulates many elements of cultural competence while prioritizing the willingness to engage in this work comprehensively - not just step by step but as part of an integrated mindset and behavioral change. \Willing Observers DEI Blog: https://www.willingobservers.com/writ...►Subscribe for more here: / @willingobservers ►Keep the conversation going on Instagram: / willingobservers ►Let’s connect on Linkedin: / willing-observers ►Visit our website: https://www.willingobservers.com/►Click here for more Willing Observers: https://linktr.ee/willingobserversllcSongs used: Whiskey Ginger by Dylan SittsClosure by Dylan Sitts

Episode 14: Is DEIB Partisan? Should It Be?

In this episode, co-hosts Dr. Lucy, Dr. Missy, and Alex focus on a question that you cannot escape from in the U.S: Whether DEIB is a partisan issue and whether or not that should be the case. Although DEIB is now partisan, it should not be as it addresses the tangible impacts of marginalization in ways that are good for everyone \Willing Observers DEI Blog: https://www.willingobservers.com/writ...►Subscribe for more here: / @willingobservers ►Keep the conversation going on Instagram: / willingobservers ►Let’s connect on Linkedin: / willing-observers ►Visit our website: https://www.willingobservers.com/►Click here for more Willing Observers: https://linktr.ee/willingobserversllcSongs used: Whiskey Ginger by Dylan SittsClosure by Dylan Sitts
