#3: Black History Month with Jamie Lawrence

In this series of interviews, we’ll be speaking with influential members of the black community. We hope that by doing this we have the opportunity to broaden our own knowledge as well as creating meaningful conversations by sharing their stories and experiences with our network. Following our interviews with Marvina Newton and Isaac Eloi, we’re proud to feature ex-professional footballer and Bradford City legend Jamie Lawrence. For football fans, Jamie needs no introduction. But for those who may not have come across him before, he’s a former professional football player who played for various teams, including Bradford City from the late-90’s to the early 2000’s, making 155 appearances. He also played for the likes of Leicester City, Brentford and the Jamaican National Team. After retiring from football, Jamie has been outspoken about the racism he experienced whilst he was playing professionally, and how it still persists in the modern game. Speaking to the Telegraph and Argus in 2019 he recalled how he had even experienced racism from fellow players, and was warned ‘that speaking out would only make trouble’. In the interview, Seb and Jamie speak about his complicated start to life, the racism he experienced as a footballer as well as touching on his work and charity initiatives. As a Bradford based business and home to many Bradford fans, this was an incredible opportunity to speak with Jamie. We hope you can enjoy it as much as we did below, and again we hope that it can stoke conversations about race with your own network. https://www.tituslearning.com/ [https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqa1A2emZ5NlVWRVU2clhmb0Ixdm56QTFHRW1aUXxBQ3Jtc0tsMmFLc2t2ZUdCOExwRkxrcmFrNnJFQWlhOWlGaDBCNmRuWUlUMmpKeUFlMGZwWnhZa3B1eFdrX3BYVUYtQWkzQUxBR2VGYmZqWXhBd01ROEVZR01JVmtBdWVITllleEdTX1U4WVZPQUdUVV9ycVAtYw%3D%3D&v=w2Chg88GUTQ&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tituslearning.com%2F&event=video_description]

#2: Black History Month with Isaac Eloi

In this series of interviews, we’ll be speaking with influential members of the black community. We hope that by doing this we have the opportunity to broaden our own knowledge as well as creating meaningful conversations by sharing their stories and experiences with our network. Following on from our episode with Marvina Newton, we’re very proud to feature Isaac Eloi. Isaac is an award-winning Solicitor and Co-founder of the Black Men in Law Network. The group aims to inspire, connect and support Black men in the legal sector and to help them enter the profession. In the interview, Seb and Isaac speak about a range of topics; Including Black History Month, Isaac’s experiences with racism in his sector, the landscape of Black people in the legal profession and the work that Isaac is doing to challenge the status quo. Touching on points that were new to us and often overlooked, we found this interview inspiring and helped us to consider new viewpoints. We hope that it has a similar effect on you, and encourage you to continue the conversation with us and your own networks.

#1: Black History Month with Marvina Newton

Recent events around the world have affected us deeply at Titus, and they’ve given us the opportunity to reflect on what we are doing to celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion. We have a lineup of events planned. And with October being Black History Month in the UK, we’ve used the opportunity to broaden our knowledge by speaking with influential and intriguing members of the Black Community. We hope to educate ourselves further, by benefitting from a diverse range of experiences from those directly affected by the issues we’re focusing on. Our first guest is an incredibly passionate and knowledgeable woman named Marvina Newton. To those following the Black Lives Matter movement in Leeds, she needs no introduction. To those who’ve not yet come across her, she’s the founder of the movement, is CEO of youth-based charity Angels of Youth and is involved in countless initiatives aimed at challenging prejudice and inequality. An all round wonderful person! In this interview, Seb and Marvina discuss a vast range of topics. And Marvina shares her unique understanding of current events and delivers her message with passion. We found the interview inspiring and it challenged us to consider issues we hadn’t previously. We hope that it’ll have a similar effect on you, and if it does, please engage with us on social media so we can continue the conversation.
