episode Obsession on Film + Euphoria S3 Ep. 6 (Obsession, Single White Female, The Truman Show, Misery) cover

Obsession on Film + Euphoria S3 Ep. 6 (Obsession, Single White Female, The Truman Show, Misery)

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we caught Curry Baker’s newest film, Obsession. It’s safe to say that we were obsessed with this film and spent a lot of time thinking about it! It was so fun to watch this with a reactive crowd and have nothing spoiled ahead of time. With this film as the inspiration, we decided to make the theme this week be other films that showcase some type of obsession. Before we dive into those, Hannah shared her thoughts on Black Phone 2 which Ailish plans to watch this coming week.  Misery is a film we had been wanting to watch for a while. This is classic Stephen King and we love how unhinged Kathy Bates is. In this one, the obsession comes from a deranged fan to a famous author, and things take quite a violent turn. The Truman Show doesn’t have the violence, but it certainly puts you in your feels. We were both a little surprised at how deep this film was and how heartbreaking it was to watch Truman realize something is off. We see how the crew/creators of The Truman Show and the public are obsessed with Truman’s life, but also see how fleeting their interest in a reality star is. Finally, we have Single White Female which also takes a very dramatic turn. Here, the obsession is between a woman and her seemingly innocent and naive roommate, but things take a sinister turn pretty quickly.  As for Euphoria, we don’t have much to say at this point. Is anyone enjoying this season? If you’re someone that is, please share your thoughts because we are struggling to find merit in it at all. episode Anna Wintour Week + Euphoria S3 Ep.5 (The Devil Wears Prada, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The September Issue, The First Monday in May) cover

Anna Wintour Week + Euphoria S3 Ep.5 (The Devil Wears Prada, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The September Issue, The First Monday in May)

On the heels of The Devil Wears Prada 2, we decided to celebrate the icon that inspired it all: Anna Wintour. Before we dive into the world of fashion journalism, we discuss Send Help and the Ohio Goes to the Movies screening of The Hunger Games. Stay tuned for some exciting things happening with the podcast later this summer! In this episode, we also discuss the fifth episode of Euphoria and…what is there really to say… Even if you’re not big into the fashion industry, you have to admire the hard work and influential nature of Anna Wintour. She headed Vogue for decades and this week we watched two documentaries that show us more about her personal and work life. The Devil Wears Prada began as a book written by a former Wintour assistant, and The September Issue comes shortly after the movie adaptation. It shows all the work that goes into creating the most anticipated issue of Vogue, The September Issue, and it really is like a time capsule for the early 2000s. It’s clear that this was made to not only “save face” after the popularity of The Devil Wears Prada, but also to give people a peek behind the curtain of fashion journalism. The First Monday in May comes about a decade later and breaks down the planning of the Met Gala. Again, we see a side of this event that we usually never get to see and it shows the true collaboration between Vogue and The Met. Through both of these documentaries, Wintour is shown as decisive, somewhat intimidating, but very respected. The Devil Wears Prada is a fan favorite and features iconic performances from Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Yes, there are parts of this film that feel a little dated since it’s not 20 years old, but we feel it holds up overall. The sequel on the other hand, really feels like a cash grab to us. It’s not something we ever want to watch again, but it definitely could have been much worse. If you love us, leave us comments on social media and YouTube, or write a review with your 5-star rating. episode Classic Disney Princesses Part 2 + Euphoria S3 Ep. 4 (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Pocahontas, Aladdin) cover

Classic Disney Princesses Part 2 + Euphoria S3 Ep. 4 (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Pocahontas, Aladdin)

We’re heading back to Disney this week and completing the Classic Princess films! Some of these are a little controversial, but we give our true feelings on each. Sleeping Beauty has some of the best animation of any Disney film. The details are so stunning and each frame is filled with so much intention. This one is also genuinely scary with Maleficent as the villain. The very first Disney Princess is Snow White. There was a lot of news when the live action version of this one came out, but we still think this is a cute film. Luckily, Disney has pumped the breaks on these updated versions because the originals should be left alone. Aladdin has another beautiful setting, and we agree this one is more geared toward the boy audience. This is the funniest out of the Disney Originals and Robin Williams is the stand out star. Lastly, we have Pocahontas. We know people have a lot to say about this film, but we still hold this one dear to our hearts for its overall message, beautifully depicted characters, and iconic songs. Yes, we’re still watching Euphoria even though we’re not loving the new direction. Episode 4 is trying to add more drama, but we’re not really buying it. The characters are still feeling off and we’re struggling to connect with the disjointed and unbelievable storylines. If you’re watching, what do you think of this season so far?  If you love us, leave us comments on social media and YouTube, or write a review with your 5-star rating. episode The Saw Franchise Part 2 + Euphoria S3 Ep.3 (Saw VI - X) cover

The Saw Franchise Part 2 + Euphoria S3 Ep.3 (Saw VI - X)

We’re back to the horror genre this week and finishing the Saw franchise. Before we discuss the next five films, we talk about a few new trailers/teasers that dropped (One Night Only and Verity) and our future plans to see The Devil Wears Prada 2. Good Boy also recently dropped on Hulu, so we decided to check out this dog-themed horror movie. We did think this was a creative concept, but it wasn’t completely executed properly. We were both interested in seeing what else could be done with a horror film from a dog’s perspective, and loved little Indy! Euphoria was also on the docket this week, and we continue to be disappointed. We’re hoping things start to pick up after this episode, but it really seems that the core of some of the main characters have changed for an unknown reason. The last five films in the Saw franchise certainly aren’t as strong as the first few, but we chalk that up to those involved not thinking it would be as popular as it became. The timeline continues to be convoluted and we didn’t love how long the Strahm storyline carried on. We included Jigsaw and Spiral in this set of films even though they’re spinoffs/prequels, but we went in release order for this theme. We definitely had some issues with both of these films and felt that they were, unfortunately, the weakest of the bunch. Overall, this franchise is beloved by horror fans and the loyalty would be there if/when Saw XI gets released. The original concept of John Kramer and his victims is so strong and we think the writers should just focus on that. episode Classic Disney Princesses + Euphoria Season 3 Episodes 1 & 2 (Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella) cover

Classic Disney Princesses + Euphoria Season 3 Episodes 1 & 2 (Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella)

After watching four Saw movies last week, we needed a little break. So, we decided to go to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and throw it back with some classic Disney. Hannah also shared that she watched Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, Ready or Not, Tusk, HIM, and Shelby Oaks, so she didn’t completely stray from the horror genre. To begin this episode, we break down the first two episodes of Euphoria season three. To say we’re feeling underwhelmed so far would be an understatement. To us, it really feels like some of the characters have completely changed with no explanation and there’s a very obvious tone change which could have to do with a new production designer and composer. Labrinth not being involved in this season is a huge loss as his music really played an integral role in making season one and two so iconic. We’re going to continue to watch and we’re trying to keep an open mind, but this season isn’t working for us so far.  Something that does still work for us is a Classic Disney Princess. Yes, we hold some heavy nostalgia for these films, but after watching them with adult eyes, they do still hold up. There’s something to be said about the style of the animation, the writing, and the music in these films that we just don’t find in children’s movies today. Even Disney itself has strayed away from what worked for so long. We can admit that some of the messaging in these older films aren’t completely empowering to young girls (Cinderella and The Little Mermaid), but they still create worlds that are easy to get immersed in and feel connected to. The only one that didn’t totally hold up for us as much as the others was The Little Mermaid. This is a cute film, but we would have liked to see more under the sea scenes and the overall plot is questionable. One that absolutely still tops our list is Mulan. From the music, to the storyline, to the action sequences, this one really does have it all. Mulan will forever be a standout that resonates to multiple generations. There was no reason for Disney to go that hard with the songs and some of the dialogue in this film, but we’re glad they did.  If you love us, leave us comments on social media and YouTube, or write a review with your 5-star rating. En fantastisk app med et enormt stort udvalg af spændende podcasts. Podimo formår virkelig at lave godt indhold, der takler de lidt mere svære emner. At der så også er lydbøger oveni til en billig pris, gør at det er blevet min favorit app.
