Laura takes this interview solo and they cover everything from Stan’s introduction to San Francisco’s ‘Summer of Love’ in 1967, his hand in organizing concerts in the panhandle, Janis Joplin, Alan Watts, JRR Tolkien and everything in between. Matthew and Laura catch up a little and Matthew reports back from his annual legal psychedelic therapy session. We get into some of our favorite topics - the relationship between altered states of consciousness and creativity and music! Specifically music made by musicians on drugs for people on drugs. (Can you guess one of our favorite bands that we talk about ?) This episode, we are especially blessed with the road and life wisdom of one of psychedelic rock n roll’s royalty-Bobby Weir! Matthew digs into his personal archives and plays for us an interview he and a journalist friend did with Bobby back in 2008 out at his home in Mill Valley. Matthew finally was able to ask him many of the questions he’s always wanted as we touch on current politics, sustainability, psychedelics, meditation, creativity, the Muse and clues to the afterlife Bobby has found within his unbreakable bond with his dearly departed band mate and brother, Jerry Garcia. We Changed Our Minds Episode 4 w/ special guest Carolyn ‘Mountain Girl’ Garcia

This week we are joined by a very special guest and beloved friend, Carolyn ‘Mountain Girl’ Garcia. Long time original Merry Prankster and Matriarch of the Grateful Dead, MG has spent her life and raised her daughters in the eye of the cyclone that is North American psychedelic counterculture. An author, artist and master gardener, Mountain Girl fell in with Neal Cassidy and Ken Kesey in the earliest days of the 1960s in Palo Alto, CA when she was just 19. She would go on to have a daughter, Sunshine, with great American author and psychedelic leader Ken Kesey before befriending and ultimately marrying and having two more daughters, Annabelle and Trixie, with Jerry Garcia - front man and lead guitarist and singer for the legendary San Francisco psychedelic improvisation band, the Grateful Dead. In this episode, MG and Matthew go on to reflect on MGs unique perspectives on the arc of psychedelic medicines journey from legal and promising therapeutics in the early 60s, , to illegal social and scientific taboos and then recently back again. The real heart of this episode reveals itself when MG lays down a powerful and impassioned plea for freedom and amnesty for the many men and women still serving hard time in prison for non-violent drug offenses on Grateful Dead tour. We touch upon the realities of the impact imprisonment has upon communities and families, a topic very near to our hearts and one especially personal for Laura. To close, Laura shares with us her families own heroic and painful journey through the punitive insanity that is the American criminal Justice system. As a treat, we get a Neal Cassidy story from Phil Lesh and MG sticks around to answer our caller voicemail. We dedicate this episode to the end of the cruelty and injustice of America’s excessive criminal sentencing guidelines for non-violent drug offenses and to the many untold sacrifices of every person that’s lost a piece of their lives to its devastating consequences.
