A New Community

Mark 3:7-21 and 3:31-35 A New Community I) The crowds clamor for Jesus v.7-12 II) Jesus calls the 12 to be with him and to send them out v.13-19 III) Jesus forms a new family v. 20-21, 31-35 Reflection Questions: 1) The crowds seek Jesus for healing and deliverance. Could we be doing something similar in our lives? 2) What have you discovered about happiness? 3) Jesus calls his disciples to both be with him and to be sent out proclaiming the gospel. Which of these needs more development in your life? What would be one step you could take this week to work on this? 4) Because discipleship is fundamentally relational and we cannot be with Jesus the same way that 12 were, how can we experience the relational dynamics we observe in the gospels? 5) Who is in your life that is a more mature follower of Christ, who is helping you grow, and who could you invest in for their spiritual development?

Jesus and Religion

Mark 2:18-3:6 Jesus and Religion 4 common ways that religion shows up in our lives I) Jesus calls us to feasting and joy, not to fasting and mourning. Mark. 2:18-22 II) Jesus calls us to recover the gift of sacred time. Mark 2:23-28 III) Jesus calls us to decide for or against him. Mark 3:1-6 Reflection Questions: 1) In the sermon, Pastor Rick said that Religion says “Do” and Christianity says “Done”. What do you think of that? Do you see any of the four common and subtle ways that religion shows up in your walk with Christ? 2) What place does joy have in the Christian life? What place does joy have in your life? Can joy be compatible with grief or sadness, and if so, how? 3) If the Sabbath is made for man, how should we keep it? What do you think of the idea of sacred time? 4) The two thieves of the cross are legalism and license, or moralism and license. If you had to say that you lean toward one or the other, which would it be? 5) The story of the healing in the synagogue, Jesus sees the religious leaders as hard-hearted and is deeply grieved and angry about their lack of compassion for the man. How did the religion of the Pharisees fuel that hardness of heart?

II) Jesus at Peter’s house v.29-34 III) Jesus alone with the Father v.35-39 Reflections questions: 1) What does this text say about how Jesus uses his authority? Has this been your experience with Jesus? 2) What do you think of Jesus’ silencing the demon and then the leper? What purposes does it serve? 3) Mark shows Peter’s mother as an ideal disciple. How does this fit with your ideas about being a disciple? 4) What steps might you take to create more space for time with the Father? How do you approach the time you do have? 5) Are there ways that you try, like Peter, to control Jesus?

Gracious and Solemn

Title: Gracious & Solemn Sermon Text:  1 Cor 11:17-34 Big Idea:  Like every worship of God, the Lord’s Supper as an act of worship is both gracious and solemn. Christ graciously invites us who were dead in sin to feed on him by faith; and it is solemn because the bread & the cup represent Christ, a holy God. 1. A privilege of all who profess faith in Jesus & belong to his visible church (17, 18, 22, 33, 34) 2. It represents and seals our unity in Christ as believers (17-22) 3. It represents and seals our union with Christ (23-25) 4. A visible proclamation of the gospel (26) 5. It requires self-examination in light of Christ & his work of salvation (27-32)
