QUESTION 3 - “Which Professor Are You?” In the third episode, we will question the figure of the professor or, better yet, the type of professor. The question posed by Vanessa Grünig, a student at the ETH Zurich, points out a number of possibilities when approaching teaching and learning: the toolkit, the master, the content… But the underlying question seems to me to be “which professor are you?” Vanessa specifically asked me to pose the question to architecture professors. And so I did: Carla Juaçaba, Vale Medina, and Keith Krumwiede, three very different personalities but equally inescapable figures in my own map of teaching references, shared with us their positions on this question. Guests: Carla Juaçaba, Valle Medina and Keith Krumwiede. This small Q&A radio show is based on a fictional premise: Socrates was an intern at Eupalino’s architecture office in Lisbon, back in 450 bC. Having some trouble understanding his role, he started questioning everything, eventually leading to the socratic method. The show uses this now famed method to decompose the board question of the education of the architect. I will be asking your questions to a group of interested, interesting and inspiring people. Each show, a new question. Francisco Moura Veiga Principal at A FORSCHUNG (Basel, Switzerland), editor and founder of CARTHA Magazine, curator of Publishing in Architecture. Teaching and research assistant at the VOLUPTAS chair, in charge of the research into the intersections between gaming and architecture pedagogy. This Podcast has sound and edition by Francisco Petrucci.

QUESTION 2 - Are We Missing Something? The second episode will be look into the question left by Professor Maarten Delbeke after his interview for last month’s episode: “Are we missing something?” This question points out to the gap between generations, more precisely, between what the teaching generation wants to offer to students and the expectations, desires or capacities of the architects-to-be. In order to have any value beyond the personal opinion, I reached out to students who represent groups of students: from East to West, DARIA KLEYMENICHEVA from EASA RUSSIA, JONNE VAN ROY from EASA BELGIUM, and MITCH DEANS, co steward of the Architecture Lobby Chapter at the University of Michigan. So, are we missing something? A huge thank you to the students who took their time to share with us and to the organisations they represent. The first episode deals with the departing question for the whole series: “What must the Architect learn?”. We posed this question to four people who deal with it on a daily basis: deans and directors of studies of architecture schools. Deborah Berke (Yale, USA), Dirk Van Gameren (Delft, Holland), Christoph Lindner (Bartlett, UK) and Maarten Delbeke (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) were kind enough to share with us their possible answers.
