Cascade Stick Indians

Long before settlers arrived, the Salish, Lummi, Yakama, and Cayuse tribes knew to fear what lived in the woods: malevolent forest spirits so dangerous that many tribes refused to even speak their true name. They are known as Stick Indians. Said to have the power to paralyze, hypnotize, or cause insanity, and in some traditions even eat people who fall prey to them. Bellingham Steam Plant John Doe

On September 20, 1987, a worker at the Georgia-Pacific mill in Bellingham, Washington made a discovery that would haunt investigators for decades. The remains of a man in boiler no. 9. Burned beyond recognition, with no DNA, no identity, and no clear cause of death, he became known as the Bellingham Steam Plant John Doe. Was it an accident? A suicide? A murder? Dammasch State Hospital

In 1961, Dammasch State Hospital opened its doors in Wilsonville, Oregon, a psychiatric institution meant to ease the overcrowding crisis in the state's mental health system. For over three decades, hundreds of patients with mental illness and addiction cycled through its halls. By 1995, it was shuttered, its buildings eventually demolished and paved over with a housing development. But the stories didn't disappear with the bulldozers. This week we dig into the dark history of Dammasch: the patients, the controversies, the paranormal reports, and what it means when a community literally builds over its past.
