"The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them." (Proverbs 11:3, ESV) While doing some research online recently, I came across an article that offered tips on how to tell convincing lies. One of the tips was to add a little truth to the story to make it sound credible. (That tip reminded me of the serpent talking to Eve in the garden.) Another suggestion said to keep the lie simple. Don't make it complicated. One article went on to say, "Everyone needs to tell a little fib every now and then." At first, this all sounded amusing, but then I thought how sad that dishonesty was considered acceptable behavior. We may say, "Honesty is the best policy," but we don't always live by that policy. If we become careless, little compromises, little white lies, little inconsistencies begin to slip in. We overlook that what we said or did was not completely honest. While shopping with an acquaintance, one of her items did not get scanned at checkout. Instead of pointing this out to the salesclerk so it could be corrected, she was excited to get something free. It was a small action, but it made me wonder what other things she found acceptable. Someone once remarked that "There are no degrees of honesty." We like to think there are "little things" like an unscanned item or perhaps too much change being returned. Then there are "big things" like robbing a bank or stealing a car. That assumption is incorrect. Luke 16:10 tells us: "One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much." (ESV) When we think about honesty, there are three areas that we should consider. First, we must be honest with God. Psalm 51:6 tells us that He desires "truth in the inward parts." Do we see our sin as God sees it, or do we excuse it a weakness, a slip-up, or mistake? Truth is needed because our heart is "deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV). Next, we must be honest with others. We can be dishonest by gossiping, telling half-truths, or subtly putting someone down to make ourselves look better. Perhaps we make promises and then never carry through. Or we can lie by just being silent when we should clarify a statement or refute an untruth. Ephesians 4:25 tells us, "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another" (ESV). Finally, we must be honest with ourselves. Proverbs 16:2 says, "All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit" (ESV). We do not always see ourselves in the same way as God sees us. We excuse our actions and convince ourselves that all is well. It's easy to justify our behaviors when we should be asking God to shine His spotlight on them and to reveal the truth. Like David, we should cry out, "Search me, O God" (Psalm 139:23). The apostle Paul wrote, "For we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man" (II Corinthians 8:21, ESV). We should strive for this goal as well. What are some everyday situations that challenge our honesty? What does honesty, or lack of honesty, reveal about our character? Does honesty affect our relationships with others? How? What are the blessings of being honest? What are the consequences of being dishonest? Devotion by Mary Loudermilk

Episode Obeying God's Plan Cover

Obeying God's Plan

"And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount." Exodus 25:40 When God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle in the wilderness, specific instructions were given for every part of it. He told them what kind of wood and what materials should be used in the coverings. He gave him dimensions for each piece of furniture and specified the type of metal they were to be made from. Craftsmen were provided who were able to create the different articles. And he told Moses to follow the pattern exactly. Why was the Lord so detailed about every part? Because the tabernacle was to be a type and foreshadowing of the plan of salvation to be revealed later to the world. It is interesting to note that every article involved in the Tabernacle directs us to Jesus and His plan for mankind. Every sacrifice offered on the alter points us to Calvary. Jesus coming to earth and giving His life on Calvary, changed everything. When He died, the veil in the temple was rent in two and access opened to the presence of God. There would no longer be a need for animal sacrifices. God's new plan brings grace and salvation to all who will accept Jesus as their Saviour. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Hebrews 4:16. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." Just as Moses was told to follow the pattern God had given for the Tabernacle, so there are instructions for us to follow. When Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost, the people asked him what they should do. His answer still works: Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." God's plan for us is perfect. We each must decide to accept His plan and obey the instructions He has given in His Word. Thought For Today: Have you accepted God's plan and obeyed Acts 2:38? God's Plan For Our World

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea." Revelation 21:1 The early chapters of Genesis record the story of God's creation of the earth as we know it. If you look at the order in which He created everything, we see that when He created man, His final creation, everything that he would need to survive was already in place. God had a perfect plan, and He knew from the beginning how long earth would exist in the way He made it. Here in this final book of the Bible, we read of this earth passing away, as God's plan has been completed and He is bringing in something better. In the early chapters of Revelation, we read of a lot of things that will happen before that day comes. Today we are constantly being reminded of climate change. Places in our world are experiencing times of severe heat and drought. There are earthquakes, tornadoes and other things that have people living in fear. We are constantly being reminded to do our part to change our world. If everybody would drive an electric car, that would eliminate the escalation of climate change. I remember a few years ago, we were advised to quit using paper bags and save our trees. Plastic was to be used instead. Now we are being told to get rid of the plastic. Last week my groceries were delivered in the same type of paper bags that we used when I was a child. We need to use the resources we have been given wisely, but we need not live in fear. So,I believe climate change is not a surprise to God. It is all part of His plan. And we as His children, know that all these things that are happening in our world are still in His control. His plan from the beginning was perfect, and He will determine the time and the circumstances that bring it to fruition. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Daniel 2:20-21 "Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his And he changeth the times and the seasons." Thought For Today: No matter what this world is telling us, God is in control. Devotion by: Anne Johnston

Episode Confidence In His Plan Cover

Confidence In His Plan

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6 This week I had a birthday. Normally my daughter makes plans well ahead of time. If she cannot be with me, she makes sure I have a gift early. This year was different. She hadn't said anything to me, and I was beginning to wonder why. Then I received a phone call the night before from a friend, telling me that she had my daughter's gift and asked me to go out for lunch with her and she would bring it. When she picked me up at the church, she had another friend with her. Then to my surprise there were two others waiting at the restaurant. The table was set for six and they told me there was still one more to come. A few minutes later, my daughter appeared. What a beautiful surprise. I am so blessed. My daughter always plans ahead. Even though it looked like she was not going to be with me on my birthday, I knew deep in my heart that she had something planned. I know her well and I trust her completely. I am so thinkful for the family the Lord entrusted me with. They are always there for me. My boys are too far away to be with me on special occasions, but they both phoned me and let me know they remembered my birthday and that they loved me. Their love is not something I take for granted. They have my best interest at heart and desire to make me feel loved and appreciated. How much more can we trust our Heavenly Father to always give His best to us. He loved us before we were even born. He knew what would happen every year, every day of our lives. Everything that we face in life, passes through Him first. As I look back over my life, I can see where He was leading and guiding me each step of the way. Like the captives in Babylon, we can claim the promise that the Lord gave in Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Psalm 68:19 "Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation." Thought For Today: "for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:5

Episode Waiting on God Cover

Waiting on God

"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps." Proverbs 16:9 There is a phrase which I often heard when I was younger and that I still find myself using. This week I was out for lunch with friends and when we parted, one remarked, "I will see you Sunday." As usual, I replied, "Lord willing." We need to make plans, but we should always remember that the Lord knows what is best for us, and sometimes our plans will not happen the way we want them to. We have no promise of tomorrow, but the Lord has a plan and purpose for each of us. So, we trust Him to guide us in our planning and then trust Him to have His way. If it is His will, our plans will come to fruition. James 4:13-15 "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that." When we commit our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, we commit to Him our past, our present, and our future. He forgives the sins and trespasses of our past, gives us joy and peace for today, and a hope for the future. We can trust Him to guide us and lead us. Whatever He has planned for us is good. We have only to give Him our all. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33-34: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." Sometimes we get impatient when our plans do not fall in place the way we desire, but the Lord knows what He is doing. We want to see things happen quickly, but often the Lord just says: "Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." Psalm 27:14 Thought For Today: "And although my answers seem terribly late, my most precious answer is still WAIT." Russell Kellar Devotion by Anne Johnston

Trusting God's Plan

"He called for a famine on the land of Canaan, cutting off its food supply. Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them—Joseph, who was sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph's character." Psalm 105:16-19 NLT We often begin Joseph's story with him telling his dreams to his brothers and being rejected by them. But the retelling of the story in Psalm 105 reveals a new twist. In an everlasting covenant, God confirmed that He had given the land of Canaan to Israel as their inheritance. Then in verse nineteen, He reveals that He is going to send a famine on the land. Their food supply will be cut off, and they will have to go to Egypt to survive. However, He would send someone to Egypt ahead of them. When God gave Joseph his strange dreams, the plan was already in place for what he would suffer. Joseph had no idea what awaited him. God knew that He was not ready for the task for which he was being called. It would be years before he would see his dreams fulfilled. During those years, the Lord was testing his character, preparing him. Everything he went through made him stronger and wiser. Joseph kept his integrity throughout all the trials he faced. Whatever position he found himself in, he did his absolute best. Submitting to authority, he found ways to help others, without knowing what his future held. In time, "Pharaoh sent for him and set him free; the ruler of the nation opened his prison door" Psalm 105:20 Think about it. Before we were born, God already had a plan and a purpose for our lives. We may not understand all the things we have faced in life. God had in place the people and the circumstances that would shape our lives. Instances that we might have perceived as harsh or undeserved were the Lord's ways of building our character and preparing us for the tasks He wanted us to fulfill. If the Lord has given you a dream or a vision, He has a set time for it to come to fruition. Draw close to the Lord, study His Word, and wait patiently for His perfect timing. Thought For Today: "Though the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small; Though with patience He stands waiting, with exactness grinds He all."
