Matthew 25 House: Helping Formerly Incarcerated Men Find New Life in Christ - Terry Herrman - 07/15/2026

The Mission Matthew 25 House is a Christian outreach ministry in Ames that helps men transitioning out of the Story County Jail, halfway houses, or Iowa prisons. Its goal: to help formerly incarcerated men imagine and embrace a new way of living through Christ-centered relationships that build belonging and self-worth, breaking the cycle of recidivism that pulls nearly 70% of released men back to jail. Terry's Story Terry Herman didn't set out to join the board — a deacon at his church asked him to fill in at a single board meeting, "and from that moment on, I was hooked." Unlike other board members, Terry had no personal connection to incarceration; it was the mission itself, and the other board members' devotion to it, that pulled him in. A Week in the Life of a Volunteer Residents gather for devotion time every morning at 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, plus a Saturday Bible study, and are encouraged to join a local church community. Volunteers help in all kinds of ways — mentorship, employment coaching, budgeting help, or simply spending time with the men, teaching by example what it looks like to give of yourself to others. Maria Benes: The 2026 National Eucharistic Pilgrimage Comes Home Maria Benes, director of pilgrimages for the National Eucharistic Congress, joins the show fresh off the completion of the 2026 National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, which wrapped up July 5 in Philadelphia after months on the road up the Eastern Seaboard. Timed to America's 250th anniversary, the pilgrimage began at the Our Lady of La Leche Shrine in St. Augustine, Florida — near the site of the first documented Mass in the United States — and continued through historic stops including a Eucharistic procession along Boston's Freedom Trail and a special blessing of the nation near the Washington Monument over Corpus Christi weekend. From St. Augustine to Philadelphia: Maria Benes on the 2026 Eucharistic Pilgrimage - 07/14/2026

Maria Benes, director of pilgrimages for the National Eucharistic Congress, sits down just after wrapping the 2026 National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, a months-long journey timed to the 250th anniversary of the United States. The route began at the Our Lady of La Leche Shrine in the Diocese of St. Augustine — near the site of the first documented Mass in the country — and traveled north through the original colonies, including a Eucharistic procession along Boston's Freedom Trail and a special blessing of the nation near the Washington Monument over Corpus Christi weekend, before concluding over Fourth of July weekend in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope, even sent a video address ahead of the closing Mass on July 5. Maria traces the pilgrimage's roots back to the USCCB's three-year National Eucharistic Revival and the 2024 National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, and shares a story of young adults encountering the Eucharistic procession on a boardwalk in Ocean City and recommitting their lives to Christ.
