The Dickens Library
In which a disordered dawn finds a man awakening amidst a motley company entangled in the squalor of a London lodging-house, their languid lives touched by the spectral influence of opium and the murmur of unintelligible tongues. Later, drawn by the solemn peal of cathedral bells, the scene shifts to an ancient church where a hastening stranger joins the cloaked choir in their sombre procession, beneath the vaulted shadows and the weight of sacred chant.
