In which the young apprentice sailor gains a rudimentary knowledge of the myriad crafts and skills required by seasoned seamen, yet remains confined to the humblest of tasks aboard the Highlander, learning chiefly to bear hardship with stoic patience. Upon arrival in Liverpool, the foreign landscape appears disappointingly ordinary, and the sailor reflects on the harsh realities and moral complexities of a mariner’s life ashore amid the wearying allurements of the port.
