The Whispers of Charleston
Today well be talking about the Germans that immagrated to Charleston. Early Settlers from Germany areas came from Switzerland, Austria, Bohemia and other areas leaving behind famine, war, and hunger for the possibility of a better life in the New World. The Germans came over in small waves in the 18th Century. The first German Lutherans held their first recorded worship service in Charleston in 1734. The Second wave of immigrants come in the mid 19th century. Germans participated fully in the Southern Cause during the Civil War, raising six militia companies and an artillery battalion.
