In which the newly married Valeria confronts her husband Eustace in a sombre, intimate room, only to find him distant and resigned, burdened by the shadow cast upon his character by a past trial. Despite her impassioned resolve to seek justice and prove his innocence, Eustace remains coldly indifferent, forecasting a future marred by suspicion and despair, and departs the house, leaving Valeria in restless solitude.
