Beschreibung

When were young, certain words or ideas can seem big, bad or burdensome, like responsibility. It makes us think of cutting grandmas lawn or doing chores when we dont want to. However, as we mature, we see its importance. Its response-ability, using my abilities to consistently respond to the situations around me in a way that honours God and others. Holiness can be like that too, even as we get older. Initially, we think its about perpetual moral perfection or a lack of joy. This is often rooted in a mis- (or partial) understanding of what it means. To be holy is to be set apart (distinct) for Gods special purposes. This sermon on 1 Peter 1:13 - 2:12 takes us through the text and encourages us to see holiness in a very positive light. After all, God said: Be holy, for I am holy. It looks at four aspects of holiness which stand in contrast to the prevailing mood of our culture today. As it says in the Rule of St. Benedict: Live as a stranger to the ways of the world, and place nothing above the love of Christ.

A Real Definition of Hope (1 Peter 3:8-22)

When it comes to following Jesus, we need to think proactively about how to define the terms we use. What do we mean by faith or love? If were not careful, our thinking can become shallow or, even worse, unbiblical. The same is true for the word hope. Hugo Gryn remembers a time as a boy when he was in a concentration camp. His father used up their last bit of butter to make a Sabbath candle for a worship service. Without food we can live for weeks. But we cannot live for a minute without hope. This sermon explores 1 Peter 3:8-22. Peter is often called the apostle of hope. He encourages his readers both then and now to be prepared to share the reason for their hope, even in the face of hostility. But if we dont know the reason for our hope, we wont be prepared to share it. These days, hope is like water in the desert. Lets think seriously about what it means.
