We're Making A Movie: Talking Editing with Alexander Jeffery

Editing a feature film is hard enough. Editing a movie musical? That feels like a whole different level of filmmaking wizardry. This week we're wrapping up our deep dive into post-production editing with Alexander Jeffery, Producer, Cinematographer, and Editor of one of our favorite indie films of the past year, Peeping Todd. We're going to ask about the unique challenges of editing a musical, how being your own cinematographer might have helped the process, how integral the planning process was, and if that prep work showed up in the editing bay. Alexander Jeffery hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, and is now based in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he co-owns the production company Bespoke Works LLC with his friend and longtime collaborator, Paul Petersen. After receiving a double major in Theatre Performance and Film & New Media from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011, Alexander moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of acting and filmmaking. Quickly realizing Los Angeles wasn’t the right fit for him, Alexander moved back to the South to make low-budget, independent films with his friends. His first feature film, A Chance Encounter, was released by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the fall of 2022, both theatrically and on-demand, after winning the audience choice award at Heartland Film Festival in 2020. In 2015, his short film The Bespoke Tailoring of Mister Bellamy won the $50,000 Grand Prize at the Louisiana Film Prize. MTV called it “an acutely relevant, achingly human film.” Recently, his documentary The Power of Pickleball was released by Documentary+ and is on 7 airlines internationally. Alexander’s first venture into television, the indie TV pilot Fixation, premiered at SeriesFest in May 2026. We're Making A Movie: Editing Update

Our feature film, Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, has a first assembly. A first edit. A rough cut. For the first time, all the pieces of the puzzle are on the table and flipped over. The scenes are in order, the story exists, and we can finally start to see the movie we've spent years talking about. Which means it’s the perfect time to check back in with our Director and Editor, Mike Hayhurst. Editing a movie of any size is pure magic. Fight us on it. And nowhere is that magic more apparent than in the fine edit—the moment you stop assembling footage and start truly shaping the story. Performances change. Scenes evolve. Entire emotional arcs can appear out of thin air. It’s wild. To dig deeper into the process, we’re sitting down with industry veteran Brice Beckham. Brice has worn a lot of hats throughout his entertainment career, but this week we’re picking his editor brain. Brice Beckham has been in the entertainment industry for over 40 of his 50 years, gaining notoriety early in his role as Wesley on the ‘80s series Mr. Belvedere. Coming from a documentary background but with hands-on experience in narrative filmmaking, Daniel lives in the realm of taking all of the footage, performances, and chaos from production and shaping it into something that actually works on screen. We’re taking a look at the editing process from his perspective- how he approaches building a story in post, and what filmmakers should be thinking about before they ever hand footage over to an editor. Because at the end of the day, you can shoot everything in the world… but it’s in the edit where the film really comes to life.
