episode Sarah Rowell artwork

Sarah Rowell

We chat to Sarah Rowell, who was recently elected President of the World Mountain Running Association (I incorrectly said Mountain and Trail Running Association at the start, so apologies for my error). Sarah talks about her early marathon running career, breaking records and participating in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 - incredibly the first Olympics women were allowed to participate in the marathon distance. We then go on to talk about the politics of global trail running and the future of the sport. We are very fortunate to be supported by Core Body Temperature Sensors, who offer sensors to allow athletes to monitor their heat training and improve performance. Nick Hancock is currently testing the Core 2, and you can read his review of the Core 1 here. [https://run-ultra.com/reviews/core-sensor/] 🎙️ Thanks for tuning in! If you enjoyed this episode, don’t forget to follow the podcast and leave a quick rating or review; it really helps other runners find the show. 💡 For more stories, gear insights, and training tips from the world of ultra and trail running, head over to run-ultra.com [https://run-ultra.com/]. 👉 And if you’ve got questions, feedback, or a race story to share, I’d love to hear from you; send a message to kate@run-ultra.com. Until next time, keep putting one foot in front of the other and enjoy the adventure. 🏔️👟 Get full access to RunUltra's Substack at runultra.substack.com/subscribe [https://runultra.substack.com/subscribe?utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=CTA_4]

episode Jared Beasley artwork

Jared Beasley

We have a fascinating conversation with Jared Beasley, author of The Endurance Artist, the book about Gary Cantrell, aka Lazarus Lake. Jared has followed Laz for several years now and supported him on his Trans-America crossing a couple of years ago. He has gained a unique insight into the brain behind The Barkley Marathons and the Backyard Ultra format and having started this book, I can confirm it is a must read for anyone with an interest in Laz Lake and his races. We are also excited to share that Core Body Temperature Sensors are our new Podcast Sponsor, and we are very grateful to them for supporting us. Watch out for our review of their Core Sensor 2 coming soon and you’ll find a huge discount in our Black Friday newsletter. 🎙️ Thanks for tuning in! episode Matt Field artwork

Matt Field

Matt Field is an incredibly accomplished runner, although he’d never shout about it. Within a few short years of running, Matt has come first at two 24 hour races, second at Manchester to Liverpool, first at Chester Ultra 50 and second at the highly competitive Thames Path 100. Not only that but he is our British record holder for the 24 hour fixed time format, where he’s ran an astonishing 281.3km. That’s an average pace of 5:07/km, for 24 hours, earning him his first ever Great Britain jersey to run in the World Champs. Unfortunately heart troubles late into his training, prevented Matt from finishing the world champs race, but his passion and talent for the sport shines through. episode Colin Murphy artwork

Colin Murphy

Robin and Kate have a great chat with Colin, talking about the 13 Valleys Ultras which took place at the end of September. Colin is clearly passionate about this race and it shows as he talks about gathering feedback, improving where possible and plans for future years. He reveals an exciting change for next year, which will have a great impact on the whole weekend. 🎙️ Thanks for tuning in! episode Sophie Grant artwork

Sophie Grant

So much to cover in this episode! Recorded on 20th October, Kate and Robin start by talking about Robin’s difficulties adjusting to life post-race after his successful 24-hour run in London. They discuss the importance of openness and talking about mental wellbeing and he’s now happily chasing a new 5k PB instead of running the Arc of Attrition. They celebrate Sarah Webster’s incredible performance and the British team’s success at the 24-Hour World Championships, before discussing Kate’s recent women-only group run in the Peak District and why it mattered. At the time of recording, the Backyard Ultra was still underway and the runners were on lap 46, two days in and Robin and Kate talked about Sarah Perry’s chances of success. It’s funny to look back now we know just how successful she was. Finally, they’re joined by their guest, the ever-positive Sophie Grant, who brings her trademark energy to the conversation. They chat about her Tor des Géants race, nutrition, training plans, and her upcoming entry in the Winter Spine Race. The episode also touches on Off Course, a new film following Sophie and Stephanie Case as they navigate both elite sport and the journey to motherhood.
