About Alone with English

What happens when we stop chasing fluency and start listening to our inner voice — the one that speaks with an accent, pauses to find the right word, or wonders if it's "good enough" to speak at all? Alone with English is not your typical language learning podcast. You won't find pronunciation drills, grammar hacks, or lists of "must-know" phrases here. Instead, this podcast is a quiet space for reflection — a place to sit with the complexity of language, identity, and the emotions that come with learning and teaching English. Hosted by Jennie Reed and Ruth Pringle — both educators with deep experience and deep empathy — this six-part series invites you into thoughtful, honest conversations about what it really means to live with English. Together, they explore: – The loneliness of not feeling fully yourself in another language – The anxiety of speaking up, even when you're unsure – The beauty of building connection through imperfect communication – The inner stories we carry about our voices, our accents, and our value If you're learning English and often feel like you're not quite "there yet," or if you're a teacher who wants to support learners more humanely and holistically, this podcast is for you. Jennie brings years of experience as a Neurolanguage Coach and English pronunciation specialist, helping learners find confidence and ease in their spoken English. Ruth is a language coach, creative, and thinker who brings curiosity, kindness, and honesty to every conversation. Together, they offer something slower, deeper, and more personal than most language podcasts. Each episode is 20–30 minutes long — ideal for a thoughtful walk, a quiet moment with a coffee, or whenever you need to feel a little more connected and a little less alone.

Ep. 6 - Accountability, Celebration & Learning English on Your Own Terms

THE GOAL ISN'T MORE WILLPOWER. IT'S FEELING GOOD IN ENGLISH. In this final episode of Alone with English, Ruth and Jennie explore what accountability really means when you're learning English, and how to design support systems that energize you, not exhaust you. Forget guilt, pressure, or gold stars. This is about celebrating small wins, building gentle rituals, and reconnecting with your motivation in a way that lasts. You'll hear: * What true accountability looks like (spoiler: it's not the same for everyone) * How to create a system that fits your personality and rhythms * Why your teacher should be helping you stay on track, not just marking mistakes * How to let go of shame and start fresh (old brooms, anyone?) * Real learner stories of reconnection and joy * Why community matters, even if you're learning solo This episode closes the mini-series with warmth, humour, and a reminder: 👉 You don't need to do more. You just need to trust yourself again. ---------------------------------------- 🛠 TINY CHALLENGE: Name one small thing you've done in English this week and celebrate it. That's it. A tick on your to-do list counts. 🎧 LISTEN-IN TIP: Play this episode while doing a familiar routine, let it become part of the rhythm of your learning life. ---------------------------------------- Resources & Links 🌿 True Voice English [https://www.instagram.com/true_voice_english/] on Instagram – Tag us with #AloneWithEnglish to share your wins 📨 email us with any questions (ruth@bluenoun.co.uk [ruth@bluenoun.co.uk] or jennie@excellenceinenglisheducation.com [jennie@excellenceinenglisheducation.com])  🧠 Excellence in English Education [https://excellenceinenglisheducation.com] – Coaching, pronunciation, confidence 📄 Free journaling prompts [https://excellenceinenglisheducation.com/EnglishJournal] 🎙 Listen on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/show/3IFt7cIEGIu83sIjI2LATb] | Apple Podcasts coming soon   For Audio + Transcript, click here [https://web.descript.com/094444a6-2cb4-43b2-9ff5-381e8d084142].

Ep. 5 - Journaling, Doodling & Deep Learning: Making English Stick

YOU DON'T NEED A BETTER MEMORY. YOU NEED MORE MEANING. In this reflective, creative episode of Alone with English, Ruth and Jennie explore how journaling, note-taking, doodling, and even paying attention to smells or colours, can help English finally land in your life in a way that sticks. This isn't about perfect notebooks or endless review. It's about making English yours, through emotion, expression, and small, personal rituals that feel good to you. You'll hear: * Why journaling (in any language) helps your brain remember * How colour, imagery, and movement boost vocabulary retention * Why "souvenir words" (ones tied to real-life experiences) matter most * The surprising power of messy, multilingual reflection * How creative prompts like "What does success look like for me?" can anchor your learning Plus: Ruth shares a vivid story about helping learners reconnect with language through sensory prompts, a reminder that English doesn't live in textbooks, it lives in your world. ---------------------------------------- 🛠 TINY CHALLENGE: After your next English conversation, write, draw, or doodle what stood out to you. No rules. No right answers. Just make it yours. 🎧 LISTEN-IN TIP: Play this episode while walking in nature or sitting somewhere quiet — your senses might surprise you. ---------------------------------------- Resources & Links 🖋 Blue Noun Language Holidays [https://bluenoun.co.uk/immersion-english-holidays-in-scotland/] – Real-world, creative English learning in Scotland 🧠 Excellence in English Education [https://excellenceinenglisheducation.com/EnglishJournal] – Journal Prompts 🎙 Listen on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/show/3IFt7cIEGIu83sIjI2LATb] | Apple Podcasts coming soon   For Audio + Transcript, click here [https://web.descript.com/f0104ef0-20d5-454d-9855-70f2a54e90f8].

Ep. 4 - How to Set English Learning Goals That Actually Work

FORGET "FLUENCY." LET'S TALK ABOUT YOU. Feeling overwhelmed by English? You're not alone, and you're not doing it wrong. In this episode of Alone with English, Ruth and Jennie gently dismantle the vague, exhausting goals we're told to chase ("just be fluent!") and help you reconnect with what actually matters to you. This isn't a productivity episode, it's a realignment. We're guiding you back to a place where your goals make sense for your life, your energy, and your voice. You'll hear: * Why "I want to be fluent" is too vague, and what to say instead * How to spot the difference between panic goals and long-term growth * Why you might not need English classes at all, and what to do instead * How to connect with a teacher who serves you, not their curriculum * What sustainable, human goal-setting really looks like 📝 Plus: Download your free "Self-Assessment & Goal-Setting Worksheet"a practical tool to help you reflect, reset, and move forward with confidence. (Link in the show notes.) Whether you're just beginning or stuck on a plateau, this episode offers a gentler way to move forward, one that's grounded in clarity, connection, and choice. ---------------------------------------- Resources & Links 🎯 Goal Setting Worksheet [https://bluenoun.co.uk/find-the-right-online-english-course-with-this-quiz/] - Free Resources 📈 Needs Analysis [https://bluenoun.co.uk/find-your-online-english-teacher/] - Understand what you want to achieve 🧠 Excellence in English Education [https://excellenceinenglisheducation.com/SummerSessions] - Confidence-building pronunciation coaching from Jennie 🌿 Blue Noun Language Holidays [https://bluenoun.co.uk/immersion-english-holidays-in-scotland/] - Immersive, creative English experiences in Scotland 🎙 Listen on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/show/3IFt7cIEGIu83sIjI2LATb] | Apple Podcasts coming soon   For Audio + Transcript, click here [https://web.descript.com/1a492764-b418-4db2-8cc4-01448116eeb0].

episode Ep. 3 - Should English Be Fun? Rethinking Motivation and Expectation artwork

Ep. 3 - Should English Be Fun? Rethinking Motivation and Expectation

FUN ISN'T THE GOAL. FREEDOM IS. In this episode of Alone with English, Ruth and Jennie take on a common (and confusing) expectation: that learning English should always be fun. We've been told two things at once: * "Push through the pain!" * "Make it fun or you'll never stick with it!" But what if both of those are distractions? What if learning that matters is sometimes quiet, repetitive, or even boring, and that's okay? This conversation helps you step away from performative learning and start tuning into what actually works for you. You'll hear: * Why the "fun vs. effort" debate keeps learners stuck * The difference between distraction and meaningful engagement * How your past schooling may still shape how you judge yourself * Why some "boring" practices are secretly brilliant * How to define success on your terms, not Instagram's ---------------------------------------- 🛠 TINY CHALLENGE: Do something "boring but brilliant." Repeat a simple phrase out loud 10 times while walking. Notice what shifts, in your voice, in your memory, in your comfort. 🎧 LISTEN-IN TIP: Play this episode during a task you usually avoid (laundry, dishes, sorting emails). It's not about multitasking, it's about rewiring how you show up for "non-fun" moments. ---------------------------------------- Resources & Links 🎯 Excellence in English Education [https://excellenceinenglisheducation.com/SummerSessions] – Confidence-building pronunciation coaching from Jennie 🌿 Blue Noun Language Holidays [https://bluenoun.co.uk/immersion-english-holidays-in-scotland/] – Immersive, creative English experiences in Scotland 🎙 Listen on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/show/3IFt7cIEGIu83sIjI2LATb] | Apple Podcasts coming soon   For Audio + Transcript, click here [https://web.descript.com/93c598ed-7b68-418d-ab88-3b24b5b22886].

Ep. 2 - English Doesn't Have to Hurt: Finding Joy in the Journey

IF ENGLISH HAS EVER MADE YOU FEEL ASHAMED, SMALL, OR AFRAID, THIS ONE'S FOR YOU. In this episode of Alone with English, Ruth and Jennie get real about the emotional fallout of traditional language learning. So many learners carry invisible scars from classrooms that punished mistakes, teachers who demanded perfection, or systems that made them feel like they were never enough. But it doesn't have to be that way. This episode is your invitation to break up with shame, and begin building a new relationship with English. One that includes curiosity, joy, movement, and permission to do things differently. You'll hear: * Why even advanced learners feel "not good enough" and how to unlearn that * The difference between knowing English and being able to use it freely * How creativity and movement help English land more deeply * Simple ways to build an "immersion zone" at home, no matter where you live * Why experimentation beats perfection every time ---------------------------------------- 🛠 TINY CHALLENGE: Tell a story in just 3 words. Your worst night's sleep while travelling, no grammar, no pressure. Just expression. 🎧 LISTEN-IN TIP: Take this episode on a walk. Let your body move while your mind reconnects, it's how language is meant to work. ---------------------------------------- Resources & Links 🧠 Free Pronunciation Challenge [https://excellenceinenglisheducation.com/Pronunciation-Challenge] — from Jennie 🌍 Blue Noun Language Holidays [https://bluenoun.co.uk/immersion-english-holidays-in-scotland/] — real-world English in Scotland 🎙 Listen on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/show/3IFt7cIEGIu83sIjI2LATb] | Apple Podcasts coming soon   For Audio + Transcript, click here [https://web.descript.com/41775017-d933-4389-8a3c-c8de1a620e1f].
