Corrupt Collusion

For safety concerns, names and voices have been removed, changed or distorted. This episode was created by a Calafia fellow. Hosting today's episode is a guest speaker. This episode unearths a genealogy brimming with cynicism and corruption between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the zionist entity, dating back to the Kingdom’s inception in 1922. We often hear about the zionism deeply embedded in the west, but do not address how Arab governments perpetuate this settler-colonial ideology for their own imperial benefit. Calafia welcomes guests: Professor of Arabic, Jordanian native, and former employee of the Jordanian military, to encourage Jordanians to forge solidarity with their next-door neighbors. Impoverished

Everyone wants to climb the social ladder, but no one wants to look back down. This Calafia episode delves into the experiences of low-income college students at prestigious universities, exploring how upward social mobility poses unique financial, social, and emotional challenges to those fortunate enough to obtain it. By assessing interviews from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and reviewing current public policy, Sasha Velasquez urges the acknowledgement and support of need-based resources and institutions. episode Breaking the Model Minority Myth artwork

Breaking the Model Minority Myth

This episode explores how the model minority myth in AAPI communities perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Through interviews, we discuss how the subtle effects of the myth can be seen across classrooms and the workplace, prompting the urgency to maintain DEI programs.  On January 21 of 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order titled “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity” a move to end Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion–or DEI–initiatives in contexts across the nation. Remember that policy is incontainable to Washington D.C. It grabs our lives and directs them, eroding or supporting actual people. You’re listening to “Breaking the Model Minority Myth,” episode 1 of “Beyond the Broken Dream,” where Calafia fellow Kaelyn Tan discusses how this equity is overdue amidst Asian Americans’ struggles against the model minority myth.
