Lisa: Echt niet! Ik zit al een uur in een digitale wachtrij. Ik probeer kaartjes te bemachtigen voor Lowlands! No way! I've been in a digital queue for an hour. I'm trying to get tickets for Lowlands! Maarten: Ah, de jaarlijkse strijd. Het festivalseizoen begint weer. Ah, the annual struggle. Festival season is starting again. Lisa: Precies! Ik heb er zó'n zin in. Exactly! I'm so looking forward to it. Maarten: Ja, ik zag het al, de agenda voor de zomer loopt weer helemaal vol. Het lijkt wel alsof er elk weekend tien festivals zijn in Nederland. Yeah, I saw it already, the summer calendar is filling up completely again. It seems like there are ten festivals every weekend in the Netherlands. Lisa: Dat is ook zo! En het begint eigenlijk al in april met Koningsdag. Dat is toch ook een soort nationaal festival? It really is! And it actually starts in April with King's Day. That's also a kind of national festival, isn't it? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. De hele stad als festivalterrein. Alleen is de line-up iets minder... georganiseerd. It is, actually. The whole city as a festival ground. Only the line-up is a bit less... organized. Lisa: Haha, ja, de line-up is gewoon iedereen met een gitaar op een kleedje. Maar de sfeer is altijd geweldig. Haha, yeah, the line-up is just everyone with a guitar on a blanket. But the atmosphere is always great. Maarten: Dat is waar. Maar Lowlands is wel andere koek. Drie dagen, tentje mee, overnachten op een drassig veld. That's true. But Lowlands is a different story. Three days, bring a tent, spending the night on a soggy field. Lisa: Oh wacht, het is de ervaring! De voorpret alleen al... Weken van tevoren de line-up bestuderen, je tas inpakken... Oh wait, it's the experience! The anticipation alone... Weeks in advance studying the line-up, packing your bag... Maarten: En je voorbereiden op de teleurstelling als je favoriete band tegelijk speelt met een andere goede act. And preparing yourself for the disappointment when your favorite band plays at the same time as another good act. Lisa: Ja, dat is altijd balen. Maar het terrein is zo gigantisch, er is altijd wel iets te zien. Verschillende podia, theater, comedy... Yeah, that's always a bummer. But the grounds are so gigantic, there's always something to see. Different stages, theater, comedy... Maarten: En een enorme menigte. Ik vind dat soms best overweldigend. And a huge crowd. I sometimes find that quite overwhelming. Lisa: Nee joh, dat is juist gezellig! Samen met duizenden mensen voor een podium staan, allemaal voor dezelfde muziek. Dat geeft zo'n kick. No way, that's exactly what makes it fun! Standing in front of a stage with thousands of people, all for the same music. That gives such a kick. Maarten: Hm, ik weet het niet. Ik ben bang dat als ik eenmaal mijn plek in de menigte heb gevonden, ik die nooit meer durf te verlaten. Hm, I don't know. I'm afraid that once I've found my spot in the crowd, I'll never dare to leave it again. Lisa: Ach, wat een drama. Weet je, tegen de tijd dat het festival voorbij is, zal ik waarschijnlijk drie nachten nauwelijks hebben geslapen en mijn stem compleet kwijt zijn. Oh, what drama. You know, by the time the festival is over, I'll probably have barely slept for three nights and completely lost my voice. Maarten: Ja, precies. En dan zal je ook hebben ontdekt dat je de helft van je spullen bent kwijtgeraakt in de modder. Yeah, exactly. And then you'll also have discovered that you've lost half your stuff in the mud. Maar je mist de magie van het verdwalen op een gigantisch terrein en een band ontdekken op een klein, verstopt podium. Also fun! Ik heb er zo'n zin in, even de sfeer proeven in m'n oude stadje. Absolutely! I'm going to Rotterdam this weekend. I'm so looking forward to it, just to soak up the atmosphere in my old city. Maarten: Ah, de eeuwige discussie. Wat maakt Rotterdam nou zoveel beter dan, zeg, Amsterdam? Ah, the eternal discussion. What makes Rotterdam so much better than, say, Amsterdam? Lisa: Oh, alles! De ruimte, de moderne architectuur, de energie. Amsterdam is prachtig, hoor, met die oude grachten en zo, maar het is een soort openluchtmuseum. Oh, everything! The space, the modern architecture, the energy. Amsterdam is beautiful, mind you, with those old canals and all, but it's a kind of open-air museum. Maarten: Een museum? Dat is een beetje hard. Ik vind die gezelligheid juist wel wat hebben. In Rotterdam voelt het soms alsof je tussen de bouwprojecten door loopt. A museum? That's a bit harsh. I actually quite like that coziness. In Rotterdam, it sometimes feels like you're walking through construction sites. Lisa: Dat is juist de charme! De stad leeft, er gebeurt wat. En de haven, die is gigantisch. Dat geeft zo'n wereldse sfeer. Het is echt 'niet lullen maar poetsen'. That's precisely the charm! The city is alive, things are happening. And the port, it's gigantic. That gives it such a cosmopolitan atmosphere. It's truly 'less talk, more action'. Maarten: Ja, die mentaliteit is wel bekend. Harde werkers. Dat is waar. Maar die moderne architectuur komt natuurlijk ergens vandaan. Yes, that mentality is well-known. Hard workers. That's true. But that modern architecture, of course, comes from somewhere. Lisa: Zeker, door het bombardement in de oorlog. Het was verschrikkelijk, maar het heeft de stad ook een unieke kans gegeven. Ze hebben de stad compleet opnieuw laten ontwerpen door de beste architecten van die tijd. Certainly, because of the bombing in the war. It was terrible, but it also gave the city a unique opportunity. They had the city completely redesigned by the best architects of that time. Maarten: Precies. Oh wait, now you're going to play the teacher! The battle against the water, you mean? Maarten: Nou ja, een beetje. Maar het is toch fascinerend? Zonder dijken en duinen zou de helft van het land onder water staan. Well, a little. But isn't it fascinating? Without dikes and dunes, half the country would be underwater. Lisa: Ja, dat is waar. Mijn opa vertelde vroeger weleens over de watersnoodramp in 1953. Dat moet echt afschuwelijk zijn geweest. Yes, that's true. My grandpa used to tell stories about the North Sea flood of 1953. That must have been truly awful. Maarten: Absoluut. Die ramp deed de regering beseffen dat er echt iets groots moest gebeuren. Toen zijn ze met het plan voor de Deltawerken gekomen. Een gigantisch project. Absolutely. That disaster made the government realize that something truly big had to happen. That's when they came up with the plan for the Delta Works. A gigantic project. Lisa: Dat is echt een toonbeeld van Nederlands waterbeheer, hè? Ik vind het zo knap hoe dat allemaal is bedacht en gebouwd. Die enorme keringen die de zee tegenhouden. That's truly a prime example of Dutch water management, isn't it? I find it so clever how it was all conceived and built. Those enormous barriers that hold back the sea. Maarten: Zeker. En het is niet alleen verdedigen, maar ook land maken. Het hele concept van een polder is toch geniaal? Certainly. And it's not just defending, but also creating land. The whole concept of a polder is ingenious, isn't it? Lisa: Een polder... ja, dat is zo'n stuk land dat lager ligt dan de zeespiegel, toch? A polder... yes, that's a piece of land that lies lower than sea level, right? Maarten: Precies. Het is land dat we op het water hebben veroverd door het droogleggen van meren of delen van de zee. Exactly. It's land that we've conquered from the water by draining lakes or parts of the sea. Lisa: Droogleggen, dat is ook zo'n mooi woord. Gewoon een pomp aanzetten en wachten tot het droog is. Simpel gezegd dan, hè. Draining, that's such a nice word too. Just turn on a pump and wait until it's dry. Simply put, of course. Maarten: Haha, ja, heel simpel gezegd. Maar ons hele waterbeheer, met het inpolderen en de dijken, is wel iets waar we wereldwijd bekend om staan. Haha, yes, very simply put. But our entire water management, with the poldering and the dikes, is something we are known for worldwide. Lisa: Dat is zeker waar. Ik ben trots op Rotterdam, maar eigenlijk is heel Nederland best een indrukwekkend project. That is certainly true. What happened? Lisa: Nou, ik had een vriendin uit Engeland op bezoek. En ik probeerde haar iets uit te leggen... het was echt een drama. Well, I had a friend from England visiting. And I tried to explain something to her... it was a real drama. Maarten: Haha, wat dan? Haha, what then? Lisa: Nou, het woord 'gezellig'. We zaten in een heel leuk cafeetje, echt zo'n plek waarvan je meteen blij wordt. Well, the word 'gezellig'. We were in a really nice little cafe, truly one of those places that immediately makes you happy. Maarten: Ja precies, ik weet wat je bedoelt. En toen vroeg ze wat 'gezellig' betekent? Exactly, I know what you mean. And then she asked what 'gezellig' means? Lisa: Ja! Ik zei 'cozy', maar dat is het niet. Het is de sfeer, de mensen, het kaarslicht... alles bij elkaar. De hele gezelligheid is gewoon... onvertaalbaar. Yes! I said 'cozy', but that's not it. It's the atmosphere, the people, the candlelight... everything combined. The whole 'gezelligheid' is just... untranslatable. Maarten: Dat is waar. Het is een gevoel. Het is de situatie waarin je je bevindt, niet alleen het object of de ruimte. That's true. It's a feeling. It's the situation you're in, not just the object or the space. Lisa: Precies! Dat is de spijker op z'n kop. Ik probeerde het concept waarmee wij opgroeien uit te leggen, maar ze keek me aan alsof ik gek was. Exactly! That's spot on. Especially on a day when it has just rained and the air is so nice and fresh. The perfect way to release stress. Lisa: Ik ben meer van het 'binnen zitten met warme chocomel'-type. Maar ik snap het idee erachter wel. Het is een actieve vorm van ontspanning. I'm more of the 'sitting inside with hot chocolate' type. But I do understand the idea behind it. It's an active form of relaxation. Maarten: Precies. En 'borrelen' dan? Dat is ook zoiets. Exactly. And 'borrelen' then? That's also something similar. Lisa: Oh, borrelen is het beste woord ooit! De hele discussie waarover we het toen hadden, eindigde erin dat ze zei: 'Your language is very... practical'. Speaker 1: No, not really. It's a kind of active non-action. Je hoeft even nergens aan te denken. Oh, I actually find that quite cozy. Relaxing on the couch with a bag of chips. You don't have to think about anything for a bit. Maarten: Nou ja, ik kijk liever naar een goede documentaire of een actualiteitenrubriek. Iets waar je nog wat van leert. Well, I'd rather watch a good documentary or a current affairs program. Something you can learn from. Lisa: Pff, saai! Maar oh wacht, weet je wat ik wel echt mis? De Wereld Draait Door. DWDD. Pff, boring! But oh wait, you know what I really miss? De Wereld Draait Door. DWDD. Maarten: Ja, dat was wel echt een begrip, hè? Iedereen leek dat te kijken. De kijkcijfers waren altijd enorm hoog. Yeah, that really was a household name, wasn't it? Everyone seemed to watch it. The viewership ratings were always incredibly high. Lisa: Precies! Het was de perfecte mix van serieus en luchtig. Matthijs van Nieuwkerk was natuurlijk ook een geweldige presentator, vond ik toen. Exactly! It was the perfect mix of serious and light-hearted. Matthijs van Nieuwkerk was, of course, also a great presenter, I thought at the time. Maarten: Dat is waar, hij was heel scherp.
