Ep. 33: 新しい土壌に根を下ろすことと、外国人であること - 『見知らぬ場所』

ピューリッツァー賞作家、ジュンパ・ラヒリさんの『見知らぬ場所』を再読しました。 大学生の頃に出会って以来、私の人生に寄り添い続けているオールタイム・ベストの一冊です。 今回は、物語の背景にある移民家族の葛藤や、第二部の主人公カウシクの旅を通して感じた「根を下ろすこと」の難しさについてお話しします。 私自身がヨーロッパで感じた「常に外国人として見られる重み」と、逆にカリフォルニアで感じた「自分を説明しなくていい安心感」との間で揺れ動いた正直な気持ちを、そのまま言葉にしてみました。 今日も聴いてくださって、ありがとうございます。 次回のエピソードは英語でお届けします！

Ep. 32: Ethical Dilemma and One's Agancy of Bringing Life into the World - "Breasts and Eggs"

"I wish I’d never been born." Following up on Heaven, I’m diving into Mieko Kawakami’s "Breasts and Eggs", a book named one of the best novels of the year by TIME and The New York Times. I was particularly moved by the second half of the story, where the protagonist, Natsuko, confronts the complex ethics of choosing to become a mother on her own. From the dilemma of bringing a life into this world to the vivid, bittersweet atmosphere of Osaka, I’m sharing the thoughts that have been spinning in my head ever since. 「産むことは親のエゴではないのか？」 川上未映子さんの長編『夏物語』を読んで、答えのない問いをぐるぐると考え続けてしまいました。 特に後半、主人公の夏子が「主体的に子を持つこと」を選ぼうとする姿には、友人との会話や自分自身の想いが重なり、深く揺さぶられました。 切ないけれどどこか懐かしい「九ちゃん」の描写や、脳内でリアルに再生される関西弁のパワーについても。 前回の『ヘヴン』とはまた違う、強烈だけどどこか救いを感じる余韻を皆さんと共有したいです。 一人川上未映子ウィーク、完結編です。 聴いてくれてありがとうございます。 次は英語回を配信します！

Ep.30: "It didn't have to be you." - Facing the raw and cold reality of "Heaven"

"It could’ve been anyone. You just happened to be there." In this episode, I share my take on Mieko Kawakami’s "Heaven", a novel that was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize. To be honest, this was a very difficult book to read. The descriptions of bullying were so vivid and raw that I wanted to look away, but I had to know what happens. It’s a story that asks deep questions about pain and coincidence, leaving me with a lingering sense of unease. This is the first part of my "Mieko Kawakami Week."
