Dom is a London-born, Anglo French-Algerian guitarist, composer and interdisciplinary artist who has collaborated with Lou Reed [https://loureed.com], Coco Rosie [https://www.cocorosiemusic.com] and Budgie [https://curiouscreaturespodcast.com], and also works broadly in the theater and dance worlds — most notably with famed director Robert Wilson [https://robertwilson.com/]. We talk through their initial meeting on a Robert Wilson production in Berlin, the story behind how their new album Killing Horizon [https://open.spotify.com/album/43kQDgLXUkQyP7Dg8dMgOx?si=M_ndDShASN6_3tmVI5u7vQ] came to be, along with its non-musical inspiration rooted in the works of Cormac McCarthy and Lars Von Trier. We also delve into the technical, exploring the great lengths that went into creating the vast and compelling musical landscapes that make up this incredible new album. Bryan and Dom are engagingly thoughtful and forthcoming about their work and their inspiration, and I hope you enjoy the conversation. Today on Soft Chaos we have Danish singer and composer Katinka Fogh Vindelev [https://katinkafoghvindelev.dk/]. Katinka and I first met in Copenhagen through our collaborative work with fellow Danes, Efterklang [https://efterklang.net/]. She is a classically trained soprano and experimental composer who has performed numerous critically acclaimed pieces of provocative and expansive art throughout Europe and the US. Today we talk about her journey into music performance, the history and future of opera, her work with Daniel Hart on the soundtrack for the A24 [https://a24films.com/] films A Ghost Story [https://youtu.be/c_3NMtxeyfk?si=eMI8ioaHQ1uDVYzo] and The Green Knight [https://youtu.be/sS6ksY8xWCY?si=YLJ2_RE_oy1-gvTL], as well as her boundary pushing live performances including an upcoming piece staged in a shopping mall in her childhood hometown. Katinka is a deep thinker, a compelling vocalist and composer and a dear friend. For more information visit her website at https://katinkafoghvindelev.dk/ [https://katinkafoghvindelev.dk/] as well as https://www.motherboard.works/ [https://www.motherboard.works/]
Today on Soft Chaos we have one of my favorite groups, Balmorhea. I first met Michael Muller from the band in 2009 at SXSW through our mutual friend Peter Broderick [https://www.peterbroderick.net/]. Now, joined by Michael's bandmate, Rob Lowe, we have a conversation around their most recent album, Pendant World [https://open.spotify.com/album/79pEgIAJz2FZLZ2ZZtV2lW?si=fnfrXtnyQEmIownBhbSKPA], released last June on Deutsche Grammophon [https://www.deutschegrammophon.com/en]. We talk about the process of making that album, working with acclaimed engineer producer, Jonathan Low [https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/inside-track-taylor-swift-willow], their live performance film [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1DzpuKFPM8] in Marfa, TX, film scoring, and their collaborative creative journey that they have been on now for almost two decades. Incidentally, Michael has also just released an incredible solo album called, Mirror Music [https://open.spotify.com/album/32Hr30Ahgal5QIXdpOcvNE?si=hpIiEFCMTranY6cuj4xUlA], which I encourage everyone to check out as well.
