There's Just No Stopping the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks aren't just beating teams.   They're demoralizing them. Currently on an 11-0 run as they await the winner of the NBA's Western Conference series between the Spurs and the Thunder, the Knicks closed out their playoff rounds against the Hawks, 76ers, and Cavaliers with series-clinching wins of 51, 30, and 37 points respectively ALL ON THE ROAD. Granted, the crowds in Philadelphia and Cleveland made it sound as if these games were in Madison Square Garden, but the Knicks have made it abundantly clear that it is championship or bust. Meanwhile, that sound you heard was Jim Monaghan jumping off the Mets bandwagon (gee, that was quick), and with 40% of the MLB season in the books, the Yankees' biggest need is probably a closer. Look Who's Jumping On the Mets Bandwagon!

Remember that agonizing 12-game losing streak a couple of weeks ago? Jim Monaghan was strongly suggesting that the Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza, saying that he was in over his head and had lost the team (Jim might want to stick with coaching high school baseball and leave the MLB stuff to the big boys). Fast forward to mid-May where the Mets have won 4 of their last 5 series and have a chance over the next 13 games to get themselves into Wild Card consideration. Go New York Go! The Knicks Are CRUISING!!!

Any fears that Knicks fans might have had going into the recent playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers were quickly put to rest with a convincing sweep in the 4-game series. We're talking a level of dominance that even the most diehard of Knicks fans probably didn't see coming, including a 30-point victory in Game 4 in Philadelphia. You might be tempted to start comparing this New York team to the 1970's-era Knicks that brought home a couple of championships to Madison Square Garden, with Jalen Brunson arguably the face of New York sports at the moment. The Mets and Yankees meet up at Citi Field this weekend with more questions surrounding the managerial longevity of Carlos Mendoza. The Yankees FINALLY Do Right By Anthony Volpe

Hindsight is always 20/20, so it's not exactly earth-shattering news or a sizzling hot take to say that in retrospect, the Yankees rushed Anthony Volpe to the major leagues in 2023. After an eye-opening spring training that year, New York promoted Volpe to be their Opening Day shortstop bringing the local-kid-makes-good story REALLY come to life. Volpe struggled a bit in his sophomore season (as the VAST majority of major league players do) but came alive in the postseason against the Dodgers hitting a grand slam in Game 4 to help lift the Yankees to an 11-4 win. 2025 was a completely different story as Volpe struggled both at the plate and in the field; he would ultimately undergo offseason surgery. When his rehab stint ended on Sunday May 3, the Yankees optioned Volpe to AAA to help him continue his development.  Meanwhile, George Lombard Jr (SS/3B) is also at AAA so the Yankees are going to have to move someone to a different position. And some sad news to report with the passing of longtime Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling who, over the course of his career, called 5060 consecutive games, including every game Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera played in pinstripes. It Got Late Early For These Two MLB Teams

It may still be early in the Major League Baseball season, but for two teams, to borrow a phrase from Yogi Berra, it got late early as the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies fired their respective managers. Managers may not be the ones putting the rosters together (that falls to the head of baseball operations) but when those players don't perform, it's more often than not the managers who take the blame. Mets fans, frustrated by their own team's won-loss record, might have been hoping to see recently fired Alex Cora be hired by the team.   Two things happened. The Phillies called Cora first, and Alex turned them down basically saying he wants to spend time with his kids on the beach in Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe is expected to come off the injured list and subsequent minor league rehab assignment, but there's more to his return to the team than meets the eye.
