About Your Global Voice -- Voices of Women

Your Global Voice -- International Women's Month is a special series of 31 interviews with women from around the world. This series was created for March 2018 in recognition of Women's History Month, celebrated in the US and of International Women's Day sponsored by the UN and celebrated on March 8. The world today is changing rapidly and women's right, human rights, are at the forefront of the political-socioeconomic challenges facing every country today. Women's voices are the catalyst for change. The women sharing their messages, their stories do so to empower, encourage, inspire and motivate others to step up, stand out and take action to create a world of equality for everyone. These women said Yes, to be seen and be heard. Many countries are represented through these voices: Australia, Canada, England, Iran, Ireland, Cameroon, Kenya, Pakistan, Slovenia, United States and more.

Danielle shares her journey with Cerebral Palsy and how it has not stopped her from being an adaptive snowboarder in the Special Olympics, being an author, a professional clown bringing laughter to others and being an actress!! Danielle has accomplished more than most women and men with no physical or verbal difficulties!! Danielle shares, through her assistive device, by sharing what she has done, and what her dreams are, how others can see what they want is possible. Danielle's message to everyone is NEVER GIVE UP. Danielle Coulter was born with Cerebral Palsy. At the age of 20, Danielle decided to write her bio so people can hear her story. A lot of Danielle's friends have been putting a bug in her ear to write a book for years; one-day things just clicked into place and Danielle started writing. Danielle first book is called If Dan Can Shred, You Can Too. Danielle want to share her stories and adventures to inspire you to stand up and follow your dreams whether you have a disability or not. Danielle have overcome so many obstacles in her life, and now she have overcome the biggest one- typing. As Danielle was growing up it was hard for her to read and write. When Danielle was writing short stories in school she looked at a blank page for a long time because she was scared to misspell words, but Danielle learned that it is okay to misspell words and to just keep typing away. Danielle is happy that she got over that so she could share her story with you and have you hear her real voice. No obstacle is too big a wall; one day, you will break it down. Colonel Laurel "Buff" Burkel joins host Denise Joy Thompson for this episode of Your Global Voice -- Voices of Women. Buff has served over 25 years in the United States Air Force. Buff shares her experiences as a teenager joining the high school football team, the only female. Buff discusses she always saw opportunities and did her best, had dedication and determination to succeed. Buff was the second female to receive navigation training in a fighter jet within the AF. Buff's resilience enabled her to heal and rehabilitate after a serious helicopter crash in Afghanistan resulted in a broken neck and other injuries. Buff excels at her physical fitness training, surpassing many others in meeting the requirements/standards of the Air Force. Buff shares her recommendation for women to be mentored and to mentor others for us all to achieve success. Buff also states it is the positive, inspiring women she connects with that helps her to be her best. Buff knows life and success after a near death experience is a beautiful thing and not to be wasted. Col Laurel "Buff" Burkel currently serves as the Chief of the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command’s Aviation Energy and Innovation Division. In this role, she leads efforts to develop innovative fuel savings and cost avoidance initiatives that efficiently leverage Rapid Global Mobility resources to effectively deliver passengers, cargo and fuel to joint and coalition warfighters across the globe. In her 25-plus-year career, she has served in a variety of operational and staff assignments around the world, accumulating more than 2,100 total flight hours. She most recently served as the advisor to the Afghan Air Force’s Director of Training. During her tour in Afghanistan, she was seriously injured in a NATO helicopter crash that injured four and took the lives of five NATO members, two of whom worked directly for Colonel Burkel. She holds an MA in Strategic Studies from the Air War College’s Grand Strategy Program, an MA, with distinction, in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School, an MS in Human Resource Management from Chapman University, a BS in biology from the University of Michigan, and is a distinguished graduate of the University of Michigan Air Force Reserve Officer Training Program. In this episode of Your Global Voice -- Voices of Women with host Denise Joy Thompson, Nancy Brewington shares her experiences of growing up in the projects in Harlem with her siblings and her single mother. Nancy discusses her experiences of segregation when visiting the south during the summer months; riding in the back of the bus, not able to use the pool when it was used by whites. These experiences were different than how she was treated in the "North". Nancy knew education was key to her success. Nancy became successful through hard work and determination. Nancy recounts her experiences in the Army as a single parent, as one of the first to be required to meet the Army "male" requirements and her success as a military officer and in crating her won business, including employing 10 people and contracting with 4 others. Nancy also provides services to community members and Wounded Warriors. Nancy is a wife, mother, nurse, massage therapist, a retired Army Major, three years enlisted and 17 years as an officer and a business owner/entrepreneur. Nancy founded hand N Harmony Wellness Center in 2011 and has continued to expand from the only employee to a 3100 foot center serving 3 counties, over 10 communities and providing internships to youth regarding career paths and to adults with disabilities through the Texas Workforce Center.
