Reformed Thinking
Deep Dive into Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge - Rationalism Charles Hodge defines rationalism as any system that assigns undue authority to human reason in matters of religion. He categorizes rationalism into three distinct forms. The first is deistical rationalism, which completely denies the possibility or necessity of supernatural revelation, arguing that human reason is the sole source of religious knowledge. Hodge refutes this by arguing that human consciousness, the complexity of moral questions, and historical experience demonstrate humanity's need for a divine revelation, which is actualized in the Scriptures. The second form acknowledges that the Bible contains a supernatural revelation but insists that these revealed truths must be fully comprehended and demonstrated by human reason to be believed. Hodge rejects this view, noting that even in the natural world, humans must believe things they cannot fully comprehend. Making human intellect the ultimate measure of truth destroys the distinction between faith and knowledge and effectively excludes the uneducated from religion. The third form is dogmatism, which accepts that some truths are undiscoverable by reason and must be received on authority, but it attempts to philosophically explain these truths, thereby elevating them from faith into human knowledge. Hodge argues that dogmatism is practically destructive to faith because it shifts the foundation of belief from the infallible testimony of God to the fallible demonstrations of human philosophy. Despite rejecting rationalism, Hodge maintains that reason still has a crucial role in religion. Reason is necessary to intellectually apprehend the truths being communicated in a revelation. Furthermore, reason is required to judge the credibility of a revelation, as the mind cannot believe what is logically impossible or contradictory, and it must evaluate the evidence supporting the revelation. Ultimately, while philosophy and theology share common ground, human speculation must always yield to the supreme authority of God's revelation.
