Acerca de Forgotten Cinema

Welcome to Forgotten Cinema! Each episode, Mike Field and Mike Butler highlight a film that for a variety of reasons was forgotten by audiences. Whether it be because a more popular movie was released at the same time or the movie simply didn’t catch on with an audience in the its initial run. We’ll discuss what we love about the movie or perhaps don’t love about it and decide whether the movie is worth a revisit.

Scream 7 - Now Showing

It's all come to this! This week on Forgotten Cinema: Now Showing, the Mikes finally arrive at "Scream 7", the final destination after their long Scream Lead Up series. Unlike many critics, Mike Butler and Mike Field had a great time with this entry. Is it the best Scream film? No. Is it the worst? Also no. And as the Mikes point out, even the weakest Scream is still leagues above most other slashers and basic horror films. Sidney Prescott remains a strong anchor for the franchise, and the film delivers with some very effective kills. The Mikes also dig into some of the film’s bigger talking points, including the return of Stu, whether audiences can fully buy Joel McHale as a serious action presence after his long comedy career, and how the killer reveal works within the story. With the new installment now in the books, Butler and Field also update their full franchise rankings after completing their journey through every Scream film leading up to this release. For anyone jumping in with this episode, the Mikes encourage you to go back and check out the full Lead Up series as they revisited the entire franchise step by step. After all the blood, meta commentary, and Ghostface mayhem, the question remains. Where does "Scream 7" truly land in the legacy of the series? Thank you for joining the Mikes through each film in the "Scream" saga! What are your theories for Scream 8? episode Rounders artwork

Rounders

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes sit down at the table with "Rounders", the cult favorite poker drama starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton. Despite its reputation, both Mike Butler and Mike Field come away less than impressed. The biggest issue lies with Damon’s character, Mike, who spends the entire film acting like a degenerate gambler fueled by bluster and misplaced bravado. Time and again he makes terrible decisions, particularly when it comes to helping his unreliable friend Worm, played effectively by Edward Norton. Their relationship never quite makes sense, and the film asks the audience to invest in choices that feel increasingly frustrating. The movie also leans heavily on poker terminology and insider lingo, often assuming the audience understands the details of the game. Instead of pulling viewers deeper into the world of high-stakes poker, it creates distance from the central premise. By the time the story wraps up, Mike’s journey feels hollow. His reckless behavior ultimately leads to a lucky break rather than meaningful growth, leaving the Mikes with little to latch onto emotionally or thematically. While "Rounders" has its fans, this rewatch leaves Butler and Field wondering if the film’s cult status has more to do with the poker boom that followed than the strength of the movie itself. episode Scream 6 - Lead Up artwork

Scream 6 - Lead Up

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes wrap up their Scream Lead Up series with "Scream VI", the final stop before diving into "Scream 7". Both Mike Butler and Mike Field still like this entry, but it stands as the weakest of the franchise so far in their rankings. A big part of that comes from the absence of Sidney Prescott and the somewhat awkward shoehorning of Gale into the story. The film also lacks the sharp meta commentary that defines the series, and the villain reveal and finale lean heavily into goofiness rather than tension. That said, "Scream VI" is still a good time. The kills are strong, the set pieces are memorable, and several sequences stand out, including the Gale versus Ghostface showdown and the tense Halloween subway ride. Melissa Barrera continues to grow into the role of Sam, delivering one of the stronger performances of the new era. With the Lead Up complete, the Mikes also rank the franchise so far and reflect on where the series stands heading into its next chapter. Even if "Scream VI" doesn't reach the heights of its predecessors, it proves the franchise still knows how to entertain. So join the Mikes as the go through each film in the "Scream" saga leading up to the release of "Scream 7". What are Scream rankings?
