Psalm 5:12 (KJV) "For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield." John 8:36 (KJV) "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Introduction One of the greatest misunderstandings in the church is believing that freedom and favor are the same thing. They are connected, but they are not identical. Freedom is what God does in you. Favor is what God does for you. Freedom changes your heart. Favor changes your circumstances. Freedom breaks chains. Favor opens doors. Freedom removes what was holding you back. Favor brings you into places you could never reach by yourself. Many people want favor without first experiencing freedom. They want the promotion without the preparation. They want the blessing without the obedience. They want the crown without carrying the cross. Throughout the Bible, God first delivered His people, then He blessed them. He brought Israel out of Egypt before He brought them into Canaan. He freed Joseph from prison before placing him in the palace. He delivered David from the pasture before placing him on the throne. God's order has never changed. Freedom comes first. Favor follows. There is power when these two work together. Freedom gives you a new beginning. Favor gives you a new opportunity. Freedom changes your direction. Favor changes your destination. Today I want to show you how God's freedom and God's favor work together to transform an ordinary life into an extraordinary testimony. I. Freedom Breaks Every Chain John 8:36 "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Jesus did not come merely to make bad people better. He came to make dead people alive. Freedom means we are no longer slaves to: * Sin * Fear * Shame * Guilt * Addiction * Bitterness * The opinions of others Freedom begins on the inside. Until your heart changes, your circumstances can never truly satisfy you. Example: The Woman with the Issue of Blood (Mark 5:25–34) For twelve years she was bound by sickness. One touch from Jesus changed everything. Jesus first set her free from her condition before restoring her dignity. Freedom restores what bondage has stolen. II. Favor Opens Doors No One Can Close Psalm 5:12 "For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield." Favor is God's divine advantage. It is when God places His hand upon your life. Favor will do in one day what years of human effort cannot accomplish. Favor causes people to help you who don't even know why they are helping you. Favor is God arranging circumstances behind the scenes. Example: Joseph Joseph had freedom from bitterness long before he received favor in Pharaoh's palace. His brothers imprisoned his dreams. Potiphar's wife lied on him. The butler forgot him. But God never forgot him. In one day God moved Joseph: From prison... To the palace... From prisoner... To Prime Minister. That is the power of favor. III. Freedom Positions You for Favor Many people pray for favor while refusing God's process. God says, "Let Me free your heart first." You cannot carry God's favor while carrying unforgiveness. You cannot walk into your future while chained to your past. Freedom prepares you for favor. Example: Israel God brought Israel out of Egypt. Egypt represented bondage. The Promised Land represented favor. The wilderness was preparation. Many left Egypt. But only those who trusted God entered Canaan. Freedom starts the journey. Favor finishes it. IV. Favor Gives You Influence God never blesses us merely for ourselves. He blesses us so we can bless others. Abraham Genesis 12:2 "And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee... and thou shalt be a blessing." God's favor always has a purpose. God didn't favor Joseph just to save Joseph. He favored Joseph to save nations. He didn't favor Esther simply to make her queen. He favored Esther to save an entire people. Sometimes the favor on your life isn't about you. It's about everyone God plans to reach through you. V. Freedom and Favor Work Together When God gives freedom without favor... You are delivered. When God gives favor without freedom... You may destroy the blessing. But when God gives both... Lives are transformed. Freedom changes your character. Favor changes your opportunities. Freedom gives peace. Favor gives provision. Freedom gives purpose. Favor gives promotion. Freedom gives victory over yesterday. Favor opens tomorrow. Illustration Imagine an eagle trapped inside a cage. Someone opens the cage door. The eagle now has freedom. But what gives the eagle the ability to soar? The wind beneath its wings. Freedom opened the cage. The wind lifted the eagle. Likewise... Jesus opens the prison door. God's favor becomes the wind that carries us where we could never go alone. Biblical Examples of Freedom and Favor Noah * Freedom from a corrupt generation. * Favor in the eyes of the Lord. Genesis 6:8 "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." Moses * Freedom from fear. * Favor before Pharaoh. Ruth * Freedom from her painful past. * Favor in the field of Boaz. Daniel * Freedom from compromise. * Favor before kings. Esther * Freedom from fear. * Favor before the king. The Early Church Freedom through Christ. Favor with the people. Acts 2:47 "Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." Notice the order. Freedom produced favor. Favor produced growth. A Little Humor A man prayed, "Lord, I need favor." The Lord replied, "I've been trying to give it to you, but you keep quitting before I open the door!" Sometimes our breakthrough is only one more prayer away... One more act of obedience... One more step of faith. Don't stop just because the door hasn't opened yet. Conclusion God never intended for His children merely to survive. He has called us to live in freedom and to walk in favor. The enemy wants to keep you bound. God wants you blessed. The enemy reminds you of your past. God speaks to your future. The enemy builds prisons. God opens doors. Freedom says, "My chains are gone." Favor says, "My future has begun." Invitation Perhaps someone today needs freedom from sin, fear, addiction, guilt, or unforgiveness. Others have already experienced freedom but need God to open doors that only He can open. The good news is that the same Savior who breaks chains is the same Lord who pours out favor. Come to Him today. He will set you free. He will establish your steps. He will surround you with favor as with a shield. And when God's freedom and favor come together in your life, what the enemy meant for evil, God will turn into a testimony that brings Him glory. "Freedom gets you out of bondage, but favor brings you into blessing. When God sets you free, He is also preparing a place for you that only His favor can provide."
