Gospel-Centred: The Gospel Of Jesus Christ Is Our Foundation (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

Why do we say gospel-centred instead of simply Christ-centered? Because you can’t simply separate Jesus Christ from his gospel. The Gospel is the good news of who Jesus Christ is and what he has accomplished through his perfect life, his substitutionary death, his burial, and his resurrection to save sinners like us. In other words, to treasure Christ is to treasure his gospel. To proclaim Christ is to proclaim his gospel.  So to be gospel-centred is to keep Jesus Christ and his saving work at the very centre of everything. This may seem obvious to many, but the sad truth is that not every church remains gospel-centered. Little by little, traditions move to the centre. Preferences move to the centre. Programs, politics, personality, spiritual experiences, ministry and sometimes even numbers move to the centre.  And GCC is not immune from drifting.  Jesus Christ and his gospel must remain the sun around which everything in this church orbits.

Who We Are Becoming: Core Values For The Life Of Gospel City Church (Acts 2:42-47)

Jesus once said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”That’s true for individuals but it’s also true for churches.Churches become what they devote themselves to.The future of a church isn’t first determined by its programs, its budget or even its size. It is determined by the kind of people Christ is forming us to be.Starting this summer, at GCC, we will begin a new sermon series to answer the question, “Who are we becoming?”The passage in Acts 2:42-47 gives us one of the clearest pictures in all of Scripture of the kind of church Jesus delights to build.

The Sin Of Self-Reliance (Genesis 32:24-31)

Self-reliance is the air that we breathe and the spirit of Western Individualism.Sayings like “You are enough. Believe in yourself. Work hard. Make it happen.”The underlying message is, “You can accomplish anything you want if only you put your mind to it.”But that’s a flat out lie. God did not create us to be independent. He created us to be dependant upon Him. So have you been depending on God this week? Or have you been relying on yourself?

How God Prepares His People (Joshua 5)

Israel had just experienced a great miracle in Joshua 4 where the Jordan River stopped flowing and the people crossed on dry ground. Then in Joshua 5, we read the hearts of the kings of Canaan melted with fear. Israel had momentum and if ever a time to strategize on what to do next and press forward, this was it.  But God does something unexpected – He tells them to stop. Why?  Because before God gives Israel victory in the Promised Land, He wants to remind them who they are as God’s people and who God is.  In other words, before God uses his people powerfully, He prepares them spiritually.

Every disciple, every one of us who calls Jesus Christ, Lord, the question we will face of being asked is, “Who is your King?”Who do you worship? Do you have a cross-shaped life?In our culture today, the world is telling us that there is no God on the throne in heaven. They demand that we follow the ways of the world, and not the way of Christ.They want us to deny our allegiance to our Lord and Saviour. In Mark 8, we see what Jesus taught and what his first followers did.
