A kind of discount, to encourage sustainable choices. That makes the investment a lot smaller. And everything you generate yourself, you don't have to pay for. Lisa: Dat scheelt natuurlijk enorm op je energierekening. Dat is wel iets waar ik liever niet naar kijk de laatste tijd. That naturally saves an enormous amount on your energy bill. That's something I'd rather not look at lately. Maarten: Nee, ik denk dat niemand dat leuk vindt. Het is wel grappig eigenlijk. Vroeger was Nederland het land van de windmolens, die ook al energie opwekten. No, I don't think anyone likes that. It's quite funny actually. Maarten: Haha, ja, dat is de tijd van het jaar, hè. Na de verkiezingen begint het grote gepuzzel pas. Haha, yes, that's the time of year, isn't it. After the elections, the real puzzling only just begins. Lisa: Echt niet normaal. Waarom duurt dat allemaal zo lang? De grootste partij heeft toch gewonnen? Seriously, it's insane. Why does it all take so long? The biggest party won, didn't it? Maarten: Nou ja, zo simpel is het in Nederland niet. Je hebt een meerderheid nodig om te kunnen regeren. Well, it's not that simple in the Netherlands. You need a majority to be able to govern. Lisa: Oh ja, dat is waar ook. Hoe zat dat ook alweer? Dan moeten ze dus samenwerken? Oh yes, that's right. How did that work again? So they have to cooperate? Maarten: Ja precies. Partijen moeten een coalitie vormen. Dat is een groep partijen die samen meer dan de helft van de zetels in de Tweede Kamer hebben. Yes, exactly. Parties have to form a coalition. De partijen die niet meeregeren, vormen de oppositie. That's the core, yes. All those agreements are laid down in a coalition agreement. The parties that don't govern form the opposition. Dat is een regering die zelf geen meerderheid van de zetels heeft. That happens sometimes. Then a minority cabinet can be formed. That's a government that doesn't have a majority of the seats itself. Lisa: Oh wacht, maar dan kunnen ze toch niks beslissen? Dan wordt elke wet toch weggestemd? Oh wait, but then they can't decide anything, can they? Won't every law just be voted down? Maarten: Daar komt het slimme trucje: 'gedoogsteun'. Dan is er een partij uit de oppositie die belooft om de regering te steunen bij belangrijke beslissingen, zonder zelf ministers te leveren. That's where the clever trick comes in: 'toleration support'. Then there's a party from the opposition that promises to support the government on important decisions, without providing ministers themselves. Lisa: Gedoogsteun? Wat een woord. Dus je doet wel mee, maar ook weer niet? Lekker belangrijk dan. Toleration support? What a word. So you participate, but also not? Big deal then. Maarten: Het is een manier om een politieke crisis te voorkomen. Het is niet ideaal, maar soms is het de enige optie om het land bestuurbaar te houden. De stem van de kiezer moet wel vertegenwoordigd zijn. It's a way to prevent a political crisis. It's not ideal, but sometimes it's the only option to keep the country governable. The voice of the voter must be represented. Lisa: Pfoe. Ik vind het wel echt ingewikkeld. Al die onderhandelingen en dat tactische gedoe. Gaat lekker zo. Phew. I find it really complicated. All those negotiations and tactical shenanigans. This is going great, isn't it? Maarten: Het is een spel van geven en nemen. Uiteindelijk wil elke partij wel iets bereiken voor hun kiezers. It's a game of give and take. Ultimately, every party wants to achieve something for their voters. Lisa: Je gebruikt van die typische politieke woorden. 'Onderhandelingen', 'compromis'... Het klinkt allemaal zo serieus. You use those typical political words. 'Negotiations', 'compromise'... It all sounds so serious. Maarten: Nou ja, het is ook serieus werk. Maar een compromis is eigenlijk gewoon een afspraak waar niemand honderd procent blij mee is, maar iedereen mee kan leven. Well, it is serious work. But a compromise is actually just an agreement where no one is a hundred percent happy, but everyone can live with it. Lisa: Haha, ja, precies.
