Hi Maarten! Maarten: Hey Lisa, hoe is het? Hey Lisa, how are you? Lisa: Goed! Ik had gisteren zo'n ontzettend gezellige avond met vrienden. Weet je wel, zo'n avond waarop alles gewoon perfect is? Good! Yesterday I had such an incredibly 'gezellig' evening with friends. You know, one of those evenings where everything is just perfect? Maarten: Ja precies, die ken ik. En 'gezellig' is meteen een perfect voorbeeld van een woord waar we het vandaag over kunnen hebben. Yes exactly, I know those. And 'gezellig' is immediately a perfect example of a word we can talk about today. Lisa: Oh ja! Typisch Nederlandse woorden die je eigenlijk niet kunt vertalen. Oh yes! Typically Dutch words that you can't really translate. Maarten: Exact. Exactly. Lisa: Ja, 'gezellig' is echt de beste. Hoe zou je dat uitleggen? Het is niet alleen 'cozy'. Het is de sfeer, de mensen, het moment... Yes, 'gezellig' is really the best. How would you explain that? It's not just 'cozy'. It's the atmosphere, the people, the moment... Maarten: Nou ja, het is een gevoel, hè? De sfeer waarin je je prettig voelt. Ik had het laatst met mijn klas. We lazen een boek waarin het woord voorkwam en ik moest het proberen uit te leggen. Well, it's a feeling, right? The atmosphere in which you feel comfortable. I had it recently with my class. We were reading a book where the word appeared, and I had to try to explain it. Lisa: Echt? En, is het gelukt? Really? And, did it work? Maarten: Het is lastig. Ik zei dat het een situatie is waarin je samen bent met mensen die je leuk vindt, en de sfeer goed is. Een soort warm gevoel. It's difficult. I said it's a situation where you're together with people you like, and the atmosphere is good. A kind of warm feeling. Lisa: Precies! Oh wacht, nog zo een: 'uitwaaien'. Dat vind ik ook zo'n heerlijk woord. Exactly! Oh wait, another one: 'uitwaaien'. I think that's such a wonderful word too. Maarten: Dat is waar. Even naar het strand om de wind door je haren te voelen. That's true. Just going to the beach to feel the wind through your hair. Lisa: Ja! Ik was laatst nog in Scheveningen, de plek waar ik altijd naartoe ga als ik mijn hoofd leeg wil maken. Dat is echt het ultieme 'uitwaaien'. Yes! I was recently in Scheveningen, the place I always go to when I want to clear my head. That's truly the ultimate 'uitwaaien'. Maarten: Dat klinkt goed. Het is de activiteit waarmee je letterlijk de zorgen van je af laat waaien. That sounds good. It's the activity where you literally let your worries blow away. Lisa: En dan kom je thuis, helemaal fris. Weet je nog dat we het over hobby's hadden? Voor mij is dat echt een hobby. And then you come home, completely refreshed. Remember we talked about hobbies? For me, that's really a hobby. Maarten: Een hobby waarvoor je wel bij de kust moet wonen, ja. A hobby for which you do have to live near the coast, yes. Lisa: Ja, dat is een nadeel. Maar er zijn ook uitdrukkingen, hè? Niet alleen woorden. Mijn baas had het laatst over een of ander detail in een ontwerp... ik dacht echt: 'lekker belangrijk'. Yes, that's a disadvantage. But there are also expressions, right? Not just words. My boss was recently talking about some detail in a design... I really thought: 'lekker belangrijk'. Maarten: Haha, ja, dat is een klassieker. De ironie waarmee je zegt dat iets totaal onbelangrijk is. Haha, yes, that's a classic. The irony with which you say something is totally unimportant. Lisa: Exact! Het is de manier waarop je het zegt. Hij snapte er niks van, hij is niet Nederlands. Hij dacht dat ik het een goed punt vond. Exactly! It's the way you say it. He didn't get it at all, he's not Dutch. He thought I found it a good point. Maarten: Oei, ongemakkelijk. Dat is een situatie waarin je voorzichtig moet zijn. Oof, awkward. That's a situation where you have to be careful. Lisa: Nou, inderdaad. Nog eentje dan: 'borrelen'. Dat is toch ook typisch Nederlands? Gewoon een drankje doen na het werk. Well, exactly. One more then: 'borrelen'. That's also typically Dutch, isn't it? Just having a drink after work. Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Het is meer dan alleen drinken. Het is de sociale bijeenkomst waaromheen het allemaal draait. Met bitterballen natuurlijk. Actually, it is. It's more than just drinking. It's the social gathering around which it all revolves. With bitterballen, of course. Lisa: Natuurlijk! Zonder bitterballen is het geen echte borrel. Dat is de regel waarmee je niet moet spotten. Of course! Without bitterballen, it's not a real borrel. Lisa: Oh ja, dat is een concept waarover ik laatst nog iets las. Eindeloos overleggen tot iedereen een beetje tevreden is. Oh yes, that's a concept I recently read something about. Endless deliberation until everyone is somewhat satisfied. Maarten: Ja, het compromis waar uiteindelijk iedereen mee kan leven. Heel Hollands. Yes, the compromise that everyone can ultimately live with. Very Dutch. Lisa: Weet je, het valt me op hoe vaak we het woord 'eigenlijk' gebruiken. Ik zei het net ook al. You know, it strikes me how often we use the word 'eigenlijk'. I just said it myself. Maarten: Ja, dat klopt. 'Eigenlijk wel'. Het is een woordje waarmee je je zin een beetje afzwakt, of een nuance geeft. Yes, that's right. 'Eigenlijk wel'. It's a little word you use to soften your sentence a bit, or give it a nuance. Oh wait, that actually gives me an idea for today. Maarten: Ah, ik voel een onderwerp aankomen. Ah, I sense a topic coming up. Lisa: Zeker! Weet je nog hoe gigantisch populair The Voice was? Echt, iedereen keek er op vrijdagavond naar. Speaker A: Definitely! Do you remember how incredibly popular The Voice was? Seriously, everyone watched it on Friday nights. Maarten: Ja, precies. De kijkcijfers waren bizar hoog. Het was bijna verplicht om het te kijken, anders kon je op maandag niet meepraten. Yes, exactly. The viewership ratings were incredibly high. It was almost mandatory to watch it, otherwise you couldn't join in the conversation on Monday. Lisa: Ja! En die stoelen, dat was toch een briljant format? Zo spannend als een kandidaat stond te zingen en je hoopte dat er een jurylid zou draaien. Speaker A: Yes! And those chairs, that was a brilliant format, wasn't it? So exciting when a contestant was singing and you hoped a judge would turn. Maarten: Dat is waar, het format was slim bedacht. Maar de laatste jaren hoor je toch vooral andere dingen over dat programma. That's true, the format was cleverly conceived. But in recent years, you mostly hear other things about that show. Lisa: Nee, dat is echt zonde. Je hoopt toch dat die kandidaten een leuke en veilige tijd hebben. Het lijkt me al moeilijk genoeg om daar zo in de spotlights te staan. Speaker A: No, that's a real shame. You'd hope those contestants have a fun and safe time. It seems difficult enough to be in the spotlight like that. Maarten: Precies. Het is niet makkelijk om jezelf zo kwetsbaar op te stellen, en dan ook nog eens bekritiseerd te worden door een bekend jurylid. Exactly. It's not easy to make yourself so vulnerable, and then also be criticized by a famous judge. Lisa: Ja, en dan live op tv voor miljoenen mensen. Ik zou het echt niet durven. Also a show everyone watched, but where the presenter, Matthijs van Nieuwkerk, apparently ran a reign of terror. Lisa: Oh ja, DWDD! Dat was ook zo'n instituut. Het ging altijd zo snel, ik vergat soms bijna adem te halen als ik keek. Maar die verhalen... schokkend wel. Speaker A: Oh yes, DWDD! That was also such an institution. It always went so fast, I sometimes almost forgot to breathe when I watched. But those stories... quite shocking. Maarten: Eigenlijk wel, ja. Het laat zien dat hoge kijkcijfers niet alles zeggen over wat er achter de schermen gebeurt. De werksfeer is ook belangrijk. Actually, yes. It shows that high viewership ratings don't say everything about what happens behind the scenes. The work atmosphere is also important. Lisa: Nee, dat is wel duidelijk. Maar het is toch gek. Je denkt een leuk programma te zien, maar de realiteit is blijkbaar heel anders. Speaker A: No, that's clear. But it's strange, isn't it? You think you're watching a fun show, but the reality is apparently very different. Maarten: Media is een rare wereld. Het is belangrijk om te onthouden dat we alleen zien wat de makers ons willen laten zien. Media is a strange world. It's important to remember that we only see what the creators want us to see. Let's hope so. I am curious what the next big TV hit will be in the Netherlands. Maarten: Waarschijnlijk iets op een streamingdienst, denk ik. Haha, yeah, I can imagine. I saw the result. A nice victory for you guys, right? Lisa: Zeker weten! Dat brengt me trouwens op een idee. Sport! Hoe zit dat eigenlijk bij jou? Definitely! That actually gives me an idea. Sports! How about you, actually? Maarten: Nou ja, ik ben niet zo'n fanatieke toeschouwer als jij. Ik vind het leuker om zelf iets te doen, hoewel het meestal bij een rondje hardlopen blijft. Well, I'm not as fanatical a spectator as you are. I prefer to do something myself, although it usually just stays at a run. Lisa: Oh echt? Ik vind die hele sfeer in een stadion, of zelfs gewoon in de kroeg met andere supporters, juist geweldig. Iedereen die samen voor één team juicht. Dat heb je met hardlopen niet. Oh really? I actually find that whole atmosphere in a stadium, or even just in the pub with other supporters, amazing. Everyone cheering together for one team. You don't get that with running. Maarten: Nee, dat is waar. Maar ik vind de rust juist fijn. Vooral schaatsen in de winter. Als er natuurijs ligt, ben ik de eerste die zijn schaatsen pakt om een tocht te maken. No, that's true. But I actually like the peace and quiet. Especially ice skating in winter. If there's natural ice, I'm the first to grab my skates for a tour. Lisa: Oh wacht, schaatsen! Ja, dat is wel echt typisch Nederlands. De hele Elfstedentocht-koorts, terwijl die al jaren niet is doorgegaan. Oh wait, ice skating! Yeah, that's really typically Dutch. The whole Elfstedentocht fever, even though it hasn't happened for years. Maarten: Ja precies. Maar zelfs als er geen Elfstedentocht is, zie je dat het hele land het ijs op wil zodra het kan. Het is een soort nationale hobby geworden. Exactly. But even if there's no Elfstedentocht, you see that the whole country wants to get on the ice as soon as possible. It's become a kind of national hobby. Lisa: Ik vind het doodeng. Ik heb het wel eens geprobeerd, maar ik ben zo bang om te vallen en een blessure op te lopen. Ik ben één keer flink onderuit gegaan, en daarna was ik er wel klaar mee. I find it terrifying. I've tried it before, but I'm so afraid of falling and getting injured. I took a big tumble once, and after that, I was done with it. Maarten: Ach, dat hoort er een beetje bij. Oefening baart kunst. Hoewel ik moet toegeven dat het ijs soms best verraderlijk kan zijn, vooral als er scheuren in zitten. Oh, that's part of it. Practice makes perfect. Although I have to admit that the ice can sometimes be quite treacherous, especially if there are cracks in it. Lisa: En hoe zit het dan met de competitie? Ben je dan ook zo gedreven om te winnen van anderen? And what about competition then? Are you also so driven to win against others? Maarten: Niet echt. Bij schaatsen gaat het voor mij meer om de prestatie voor mezelf, om de afstand. Bij voetbal lijkt het alleen maar te gaan om het winnen van de tegenstander. Not really. For me, with ice skating, it's more about the personal achievement, about the distance. With football, it seems to be only about winning against the opponent. Lisa: Ja, dat is het hele punt! De spanning, de strijd! Het gevoel na een overwinning is onbeschrijfelijk. En ja, het verlies is vreselijk, maar dat maakt de volgende winst weer mooier. Yes, that's the whole point! The tension, the struggle! The feeling after a victory is indescribable. And yes, losing is terrible, but that makes the next win even better. Maarten: Dat is de mentaliteit van een echte supporter, denk ik. Ik zie het ook bij de kinderen op school tijdens de Koningsspelen. Die worden ineens ongelofelijk fanatiek. That's the mentality of a true supporter, I guess. I also see it with the children at school during the King's Games. They suddenly become incredibly fanatical. Lisa: Oh ja, de Koningsspelen! Dat is ook zoiets typisch Nederlands. Allemaal in oranje sporten op de dag voor de verjaardag van de koning. Oh yeah, the King's Games! That's also something typically Dutch. Everyone doing sports in orange on the day before the king's birthday. Maarten: Precies. We organiseren dan een hele sportdag. De kinderen doen mee aan allerlei wedstrijden, van zakkenlopen tot een kleine voetbalcompetitie. Ze nemen het heel serieus. Exactly. We then organize a whole sports day. The children participate in all sorts of competitions, from sack races to a small football league. They take it very seriously. Lisa: Haha, ik zie het al voor me. Kleine Maartens die heel serieus aan het sporten zijn. Haha, I can just imagine it. Little Maartens seriously doing sports. Maarten: Nou, ze zijn vooral heel luidruchtig. Maar het is wel mooi om te zien hoe ze opgaan in het spel, ook al is het maar voor de lol en niet voor een echte prijs. Well, they're mostly very noisy. But it's nice to see how they get into the game, even if it's just for fun and not for a real prize. Lisa: Maar doe jij dan ook mee? Of ben je alleen de scheidsrechter die alles in goede banen leidt? Speaker 1: But do you join in then? Or are you just the referee who keeps everything running smoothly? Maarten: Ik probeer het te beperken tot aanmoedigen. Ik heb geen zin in een blessure door een potje trefbal tegen groep acht. Die zijn meedogenloos. Speaker 2: I try to limit it to cheering. Maar het zette me aan het denken... over startups enzo. Hoe begin je zoiets nou echt? No! Much better. But it got me thinking... about startups and stuff. How do you really start something like that? Maarten: Nou ja, met meer dan alleen een idee, meestal. Je hebt een heel plan nodig. Well, with more than just an idea, usually. You need a whole plan. Lisa: Een businessplan, bedoel je? Pff, lekker belangrijk. Ik vind dat je met een goed idee en veel energie al een heel eind komt. Kijk naar al die succesvolle ondernemers! A business plan, you mean? Pff, as if that's important. I think that with a good idea and a lot of energy, you can get quite far. Look at all those successful entrepreneurs! Maarten: Dat is waar, maar die ondernemers hebben wel nagedacht over de volgende stappen. Je kunt niet zomaar iets lanceren. Je hebt financiering nodig, bijvoorbeeld. That's true, but those entrepreneurs did think about the next steps. You can't just launch something. You need funding, for example. Lisa: Financiering... ja, oké. Je bedoelt dat je een investeerder moet vinden die geld in je idee wil steken. Funding... yes, okay. You mean you have to find an investor who wants to put money into your idea. Maarten: Ja precies. En een investeerder wil een businessplan zien. Die wil weten wie je klanten zijn, wat de markt is, en wie de concurrentie is. Yes, exactly. And an investor wants to see a business plan. They want to know who your customers are, what the market is, and who the competition is. Lisa: Concurrentie... Daar zeg je wat. Voor mijn app zijn er vast al duizend anderen. Dan moet je dus echt innoveren om op te vallen. Competition... You've got a point there. For my app, there are probably already a thousand others. So you really have to innovate to stand out. Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Je moet iets beter of anders doen. Of een compleet nieuwe technologie gebruiken. Kijk naar een bedrijf als ASML. Die zijn zo groot geworden door constant te innoveren met hun chipmachines. Dat is natuurlijk een extreem voorbeeld. Actually, yes. You have to do something better or different. Or use a completely new technology. Look at a company like ASML. They became so big by constantly innovating with their chip machines. That's an extreme example, of course. Lisa: Wauw, ja, dat is een ander niveau. Maar je hebt ook kleinere voorbeelden, toch? Zoals TomTom vroeger. Dat was toch ook gewoon een Nederlandse startup? Wow, yes, that's another level. Ik denk dat mijn app echt schaalbaar is. A prototype... oh wait, that sounds like a lot of work. Maybe I should put my idea on paper first. I think my app is really scalable. Maarten: Schaalbaar? Yesterday I watched a documentary about the North Sea flood of 1953. What happened there was truly unbelievable. Maarten: Oh ja, dat is een enorme gebeurtenis in de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Vooral in Zeeland was de impact gigantisch. Oh yes, that's a huge event in Dutch history. Especially in Zeeland, the impact was enormous. Lisa: Ja, en als je dan zo'n storm hoort, ga je er toch over nadenken. Wij zitten hier nu hoog en droog in Utrecht, maar een groot deel van Nederland ligt natuurlijk onder de zeespiegel.
