No Shortcuts to Now
š§ Field Note 5.5 ā The Ballad of Bill and Bud This audio essay continues the journey of No Shortcuts to Now through myth, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves to get through the day. In this episode: a gas station, a Reagan-era paycheck, two men who share a shift but not a worldview, and a question that won't stay buried: What's the difference between what a man believes about himself and what he actually does? Set in the early 1980s, this essay follows a gas station attendant named Bill through the small, unremarkable transactions of a workday ā at the pump, with a customer, with his own conscience ā that quietly expose the gap between the man he thinks he is and the one his choices keep revealing. It's a story about self-deception, about the prejudices we paint over rather than look at directly, and about what it costs to keep believing the comfortable version of events. He painted his black swans white. Not every truth wants to be seen. Don't lose the trail.
