Ep35 - Why Do Students Sit on the Floor?

Students sitting on the floor with cup noodles and drinks.At first, it may look a little strange — but maybe there is something warm hidden in that small scene. ==Japanese and English scripts== みなさんは、外で地面や床に座ることがありますか。 Do you ever sit on the ground or on the floor outside? シンガポールでは、時々おもしろい景色を見ます。 In Singapore, I sometimes see an interesting scene. ショッピングモールの中や、駅へ行く通路で、学生たちが床に座っています。 Inside shopping malls, or in the walkway to a station, students are sitting on the floor. 友達と一緒に座っています。 They are sitting with their friends. カップラーメンを食べている人もいます。 Some are eating cup noodles. ジュースを飲んでいる人もいます。 Some are drinking juice. みんなで円になって、楽しそうに話しています。 They sit in a circle and talk happily. 大きな声で笑っていることもあります。 Sometimes they laugh loudly. 大人になった今の私は、すぐにこう思いました。 Now that I am an adult, I quickly thought this. 「床、汚くないかな。大丈夫かな。」 “Isn’t the floor dirty? Is it okay?” でも、学生たちはあまり気にしていないようでした。 But the students did not seem to care very much. でも、よく考えると、私も昔はそうだったかもしれません。 But when I thought about it carefully, I may have been like that too in the past. 学生の時、学校の床に普通に座っていたと思います。 When I was a student, I think I also sat on the school floor normally. 例えば、学園祭の準備がありました。 For example, there was preparation for a school festival. 教室で、ダンボールを切ったり、色をぬったりしました。 In the classroom, we cut cardboard and painted things. その時、椅子に座らないで、床に座って作業をしていたと思います。 At that time, I think we worked while sitting on the floor, not on chairs. 服が少し汚れても、あまり気にしませんでした。 Even if our clothes got a little dirty, we did not care much. 外で遊んでいる時も同じでした。 It was the same when we played outside. たくさん走って、疲れたら、そのまま座りました。 We ran a lot, and when we got tired, we just sat down. 地面がきれいかどうかは、あまり考えませんでした。 We did not think much about whether the ground was clean or not. 子どもの時は、世界のいろいろな場所が、座ってもいい場所だった気がします。 When we were children, many places in the world felt like places where we could sit. 階段でも、廊下でも、運動場のはしでも、あまり気にしませんでした。 On stairs, in corridors, or at the edge of a sports ground, we did not care much. 今思うと、少しおもしろいです。 When I think about it now, it is a little funny. 大人になると、いろいろなことを考えるようになります。 When we become adults, we start thinking about many things. 服が汚れるかもしれません。 Our clothes might get dirty. 床が汚いかもしれません。 The floor might be dirty. 人に見られるかもしれません。 Other people might see us. だから、すぐに座ることができません。 So we cannot sit down so easily. でも、子どもや学生の時は、もっと自由だった気がします。 But when we were children or students, I feel we were freer. 友達がいて、少し食べ物があって、少し飲み物があれば、それだけで楽しかったです。 If we had friends, a little food, and a little drink, that was enough to have fun. お金はあまりありませんでした。 We did not have much money. 毎週カフェに行くことはできませんでした。 We could not go to cafés every week. でも、床に座って友達と話すだけで、十分楽しかったです。 But just sitting on the floor and talking with friends was enough fun. ジュース一本でも、カップラーメン一つでも、楽しい時間になりました。 Even one bottle of juice or one cup of noodles could become a fun time. シンガポールで学生たちを見ると、私はそのことを思い出しました。 When I saw students in Singapore, I remembered that. 最初は、「床、汚くないかな」と思いました。 At first, I thought, “Isn’t the floor dirty?” でもその後すぐに、別の気持ちも出てきました。 But soon after that, another feeling also came to me. 「ああ、青春だな」と。 “Ah, this is youth.” 友達と集まって、何でもない話をして、大きな声で笑う。 Gathering with friends, talking about nothing special, and laughing loudly. 思い出すと、とても大切な時間だったと思います。 When I remember it, I think it was a very important time. 本当にしょうもないことでも、本気で笑っていました。 We laughed seriously, even at really silly things. 友達の変な顔。 A friend’s funny face. 小さな失敗。 A small mistake. よく分からない冗談。 A joke we did not really understand. そんなことで、お腹が痛くなるくらい笑っていました。 We laughed so much at those things that our stomachs hurt. 帰り道に、みんなでワイワイ集まる場所があまりないなら、ショッピングモールの迷惑にならない場所で座るのも、悪くないのかもしれません。 If there are not many places to gather and chat on the way home, sitting in a place in a shopping mall where they do not bother others may not be so bad. 友達と座って、ジュースを飲んで、楽しく話す。 Sitting with friends, drinking juice, and talking happily. それは、とてもいい時間のように思えます。 That seems like a very nice time. 皆さんの青春時代は、どうでしたか。 What was your youth like?

Ep34 - Have You Read a Book Recently?

Have you read a book recently? I talk about a small surprise I found while thinking about reading in Japan.Maybe it will make you want to open a book again. ==Japanese and English scripts== みなさんは、最近、本を読みましたか。 Have you read a book recently? 私は本を読むことが好きです。 I like reading books. それで最近、日本の読書率について少し調べてみました。 So recently, I looked up Japan’s reading rate a little. すると、国が行った調査を見つけました。 Then I found a survey done by the government. その調査では、1か月に本を1冊も読まない人が、約62パーセントだったそうです。 According to the survey, about 62 percent of people do not read even one book in a month. 私はこれを見て、かなりびっくりしました。 When I saw this, I was quite surprised. 「そんなに多いのか」と思いました。 I thought, “Is it really that many?” 2018年ごろの調査では、この数字は47パーセントぐらいだったそうです。 In a survey around 2018, the number was about 47 percent. そこからさらに増えているので、本を読まない人がかなり多くなっているのだと思います。 Since the number has increased since then, I think more and more people are not reading books. もちろん、本を読まないからといって、文字を読まないわけではないそうです。 Of course, it seems that not reading books does not mean people do not read words. 今は、スマホでたくさんの文字を読みます。 Now, we read many words on our phones. ニュースの記事を読みます。 We read news articles. SNSの投稿も読みます。 We also read posts on social media. 短いコメントも読みます。 We read short comments too. 特に日本では、Xを使う人が多いです。 Especially in Japan, many people use X. 昔の名前で言うと、ツイッターですね。 Using the old name, it is Twitter. シンガポールにいる人には、少し意外かもしれません。 For people in Singapore, this may be a little surprising. 日本では、Xが今でもかなり人気です。 In Japan, X is still quite popular. だから、文字を読む時間はあると思います。 So I think people still have time when they read words. でも、本を読む時間は減っているのかもしれません。 But maybe the time for reading books is decreasing. 同じ調査では、読書量が前より減ったという人も、約7割いたそうです。 In the same survey, about 70 percent of people said they read less than before. 理由として多かったのは、スマホやゲームなどです。 A common reason was phones, games, and similar things. たしかに、この気持ちはよく分かります。 Actually, I understand this feeling very well. 少しだけスマホを見るつもりでも、時間がすぐに過ぎます Even if I plan to look at my phone only a little, time passes quickly. 5分だけのつもりが、30分になることがあります。 I plan to use it for five minutes, but sometimes it becomes thirty minutes. 気がついたら、もう寝る時間です。 When I notice, it is already time to sleep. 本を開く前に、一日が終わってしまいます。 The day ends before I open a book. 私は本が好きなので、少し残念だなと思います。 I like books, so I feel a little sad about this. 本を読むのが少し面倒だと感じるのは、よく分かります。 I understand that reading a book can feel a little troublesome. でも、一度だまされたと思って読んでみると、けっこう面白いですよ。 But if you try reading one once, just as an experiment, it can actually be quite interesting. 本を読めば、一人の時間を過ごすことができます。 When you read a book, you can spend time alone. 静かな時間を過ごすこともできます。 You can also spend quiet time. 自分の教養を深めることもできます。 You can deepen your knowledge and culture.頭や心を落ち着かせることもできます。 You can also calm your mind and heart. ただ、私も人のことは言えません。 However, I cannot really criticise other people. 私は今でも本は読んでいます。 I still read books now. でも、長い映画を見るのが、少し苦手になりました。 But I have become a little bad at watching long films. YouTubeの短い動画に慣れてしまったからかもしれません Maybe it is because I have got used to short videos on YouTube. 昔は、2時間の映画を普通に見ていました。 In the past, I could watch a two-hour film normally. でも今は、「長いな」と感じることがあります。 But now, I sometimes feel, “This is long.” そう考えると、本を読まない人の気持ちも分かります。 When I think about it like that, I understand people who do not read books. 本が嫌いになったわけではないと思います。 I do not think people necessarily hate books. ただ、ほかに楽なものが増えたのだと思います。 I think there are just more easy things now. すぐに見られるもの。 Things we can watch immediately. 短い時間で楽しめるもの。 Things we can enjoy in a short time. そういうものが、毎日の中にたくさんあります。 There are many things like that in our daily lives. でも、たまには本を読む時間もいいと思います。 But I think it is nice to read a book sometimes. たくさん読まなくてもいいです。 We do not need to read many books. 難しい本でなくてもいいです。 It does not need to be a difficult book. 少しだけでもいいと思います。 Even a little is fine, I think. スマホから少し離れて、ゆっくり文字を読む。 We move away from our phone a little and read slowly. そういう時間も、今の生活には大切な気がします。 I feel that this kind of time is also important in our lives now.

It is “really, really hot”. 外に出た瞬間に、体が少し重くなります。 The moment I go outside, my body feels a little heavy. 少し歩くだけで、今まで以上に汗が出ます。 Even if I walk just a little, I sweat more than before. 日なたにいると、頭がぼーっとします。 When I am in the sun, my head feels a bit fuzzy. 最近、東南アジアの暑さについてのニュースを読みました。 Recently, I read some news about the heat in Southeast Asia. 2050年には、今よりもっと暑くなるかもしれないそうです。 It said that by 2050, it may become even hotter than it is now. 特に、タイのバンコクでは、38度をこえる日が増えるかもしれないそうです。 In particular, in Bangkok, Thailand, there may be more days above 38 degrees. 38度と聞くと、本当に怖いですよね。 When I hear “38 degrees”, it honestly sounds scary. まるで、ずっと温泉の中にいるような暑さかもしれません。 It might feel like being inside a hot spring all the time. 温泉は好きですが、それが毎日だったら、絶対大変です。 I like hot springs, but if it were like that every day, it would definitely be tough. 外を歩くことも、仕事をすることも、買い物に行くことも、全部しんどくなると思います。 Walking outside, working, and even going shopping would all become exhausting. 日本の夏も、最近はとても暑いです。 Summers in Japan have also become very hot recently. 私が子どものころも、夏は暑かったです。 Summer was hot even when I was a child. でも、今の暑さは完全に別物に感じます。 But the heat now feels like something completely different. 日本では、夏に高校野球があります。 In Japan, there is the national summer high school baseball tournament. 高校生が、暑い中で野球をします。 High school students play baseball in the heat. 選手の顔は日に焼けて、真っ黒になります。 The players’ faces become very dark from the sun. それを見ると、「青春だなあ」と感じる人も多いと思います。 When people see that, many may feel, “That’s youth.” 一生懸命な姿は、本当にすてきです。 Seeing them try so hard is truly wonderful. でも、今は少し心配にもなります。 But these days, it also makes me a little worried. 暑さは、ただの我慢の問題ではありません。 Heat is not just a matter of endurance. 命にかかわることもあります。 It can even affect people’s lives. 高齢者だけではありません。 And it is not only elderly people. 若い人でも、熱中症で倒れることがあります。 Even young people can collapse from heatstroke. だから、「暑いけど頑張ろう」だけでは、もう限界な気がします。 So I feel that simply saying, “It’s hot, but let’s do our best,” is no longer enough. 私は、暑さに強い方だと思っていました。 I used to think I was quite good with heat. でも、最近はそう思えない日もあります。 But recently, there are days when I no longer feel that way. 少し歩いただけで疲れます。 I get tired just from walking a little. 日陰を探して歩くことも増えました。 I also find myself looking for shade more often when I walk. これから、私たちの生活はどう変わるのでしょうか。 How will our lives change from now on? 外に出る時間を変えるかもしれません。 We may change the time we go outside. もっと水を持ち歩くかもしれません。 We may carry water with us more often. 運動やイベントの時間も変わるかもしれません。 The times for exercise and events may also change. 学校や仕事のルールも変わるかもしれません。 Heat may no longer be just a matter of weather. 毎日の生活の中で、もっと気をつけることが増えそうです。 It seems that we may have to be more careful in our daily lives. みなさんの国では、最近の暑さはどうですか。 How is the heat in your country these days? 昔と比べて、変わったと感じますか。 Do you feel that it has changed compared with the past?

Ep32 - A small cultural difference I noticed at karaoke

I talk about karaoke memories in Japan and a cultural difference I noticed in Singapore. ==Japanese and English scripts== 大学生の時や、社会人になってから数年は、 When I was a university student, and for a few years after I started working, よくカラオケに行っていました。 I often went to karaoke. その時は、夜から朝まで歌うこともありました。 At that time, I sometimes sang from night until morning. 朝の五時ぐらいまで、ずっと歌っていました。 I sang until about five in the morning. 今考えると、すごい体力だったなと思います。 When I think about it now, I feel I had a lot of energy. 今はもうできませんね。 I cannot do that now. たぶん、途中で眠くなります。 I would probably get sleepy halfway through. 私は、飲み会がそんなに好きではありませんでした。 I did not really like drinking parties. お酒を飲むのも好きではありません。 I do not like drinking alcohol either. でも、飲み会の後に行くカラオケは、実はとても楽しみでした。 But actually, I really enjoyed going to karaoke after drinking parties. 「早くカラオケに行かないかな」と思っていたこともあります。 Sometimes I thought, “I hope we go to karaoke soon.” カラオケでは、お酒を飲まなくても楽しめます。 At karaoke, you can have fun without drinking alcohol. 友達の歌を聞くだけでも楽しいです。 Just listening to friends sing is fun. 自分が歌っても楽しいです。 Singing by yourself is fun too. 少し大きい声を出すと、気持ちがすっきりします。 When I use a slightly loud voice, I feel refreshed. シンガポールにもカラオケがあるのは、本当にありがたいです。 I am really grateful that there is karaoke in Singapore too. しかも、日本の歌も選ぶことができます。 Also, I can choose Japanese songs. 歌いたい日本の歌が見つかると、嬉しくなります。 When I find a Japanese song I want to sing, I feel happy. 「あ、この曲あるんだ」と思います。 I think, “Oh, they have this song.” でも、シンガポールでカラオケに行くと、 But when I go to karaoke in Singapore, 日本と少し違う楽しさもあります。 there is also a different kind of fun from Japan. シンガポールの人たちは、英語の歌や中国語の歌を歌います。 People in Singapore sing English songs and Chinese songs. 私はそれを聞くのが、とても新鮮です。 For me, listening to that feels very fresh. 自分が知らない歌もあります。 There are songs I do not know. でも、みんなが楽しそうに歌っているのを見ると、こちらも楽しくなります。 But when I see everyone singing happily, I also feel happy. そして、カラオケに行って、少し文化の違いを感じたことがあります。 And when I went to karaoke, I noticed a small cultural difference. それは、歌の入れ方です。 It was the way people choose songs. もちろん、人やグループによって違うと思います。 Of course, I think it depends on the people and the group. でも、私が日本で友達とカラオケに行く時は、 But when I went to karaoke with friends in Japan, 一人一曲ずつ歌を入れることが多かったです。 we often chose one song each. 一人が一曲入れます。 One person chooses one song. 次の人も一曲入れます。 The next person also chooses one song. そして、順番に歌います。 Then we sing in order. だから、自分の順番がいつ来るのか、だいたい分かります。 So I can roughly know when my turn will come. 「あと三人だ」 “Three more people.” 「あと二人だ」 “Two more people.” そう思いながら、わくわくして待っていました。 I waited while feeling excited. 他の人の歌を聞きながら、自分の順番を待つ時間も好きでした。 I also liked waiting for my turn while listening to other people sing. でも、シンガポールでは、少し違いました。 But in Singapore, it was a little different. ある意味、戦争です。 In a way, it is a battle. 歌いたい人が、どんどん自分の歌を入れます。 People who want to sing keep adding their own songs. しかも、順番の一番前に入れてきます。 And they put their songs at the very front of the queue. 「あれ、私の曲はどこに行ったんだろう」と思います。 I think, “Wait, where did my song go?” さっきまで次だったはずなのに、 It was supposed to be next, 気づいたらずっと後ろにあります。 but suddenly it is far behind. 静かに順番を待っていると、いつまでも歌えないかもしれません。 If I quietly wait for my turn, maybe I will never get to sing. もちろん、全く怒っていないですよ。 Of course, I am not angry at all. カラオケは楽しい場所です。 Karaoke is a fun place. だから、イライラはしません。 So I do not feel irritated. むしろ、「なるほど、こういう感じなんだ」と思いました。 Instead, I thought, “I see. So this is how it works.” 日本では、順番を待つ楽しさがありました。 In Japan, there was the fun of waiting for my turn. シンガポールでは、また違った楽しみ方をする必要がありそうですね。 In Singapore, it seems like I need to enjoy karaoke in a slightly different way. どちらが正しいという話ではありません。 It is not about which one is correct. ただ、文化の違いとして面白いなと思いました。 I just thought it was an interesting cultural difference. 次にカラオケに行く時は、私も少し強くなろうと思います。 Next time I go to karaoke, I think I will become a little stronger. 歌いたい曲があったら、静かに待ちません。 If there is a song I want to sing, I will not just wait quietly. 私も、自分の歌を前の方に入れてみます。 I will try putting my song near the front too. たぶん、それがシンガポールのカラオケを楽しむコツなのかもしれません。 Maybe that is one way to enjoy karaoke in Singapore.

Just relax and enjoy the podcast ==Japanese and English scripts== みなさんは、今住んでいる場所をどう思いますか。 How do you feel about the place you live now? 楽しいですか。 Is it fun? それとも、少し退屈だと感じますか。 Or do you feel it’s a bit boring? 日本語の授業で、こんな会話練習をします。 In Japanese class, we do this kind of conversation practice. 「シンガポールの生活はどうですか。」 “How is life in Singapore?” そのとき、ときどきこんな答えを聞きます。 At that time, I sometimes hear answers like this. 「楽しくないです。」 “It’s not fun.” 「面白くないです。」 “It’s not interesting.” 「退屈です。」 “It’s boring.” 私は、その答えを聞いても、何も言いません。 When I hear that, I don’t say anything. 人それぞれだと思うからです。 Because everyone feels differently. ただ、今日は私の考えを少し話したいと思います。 But today, I’d like to share my thoughts a little. 私は、シンガポールはあまり退屈ではないと思います。 I don’t think Singapore is very boring. むしろ、楽しい方ではないかと思います。 Actually, I feel it’s quite enjoyable. もちろん、物価が高いです。 Of course, the cost of living is high. お金がかかる趣味は、少し大変かもしれません。 Hobbies that cost money can be a bit difficult. 例えば、ゴルフやショッピングです。 For example, golf or shopping. お酒やギャンブルもそうですね。 Drinking or gambling as well. お金がないと、なかなかできないと思います。 Without money, it’s not easy to enjoy them. でも、そうじゃない趣味もあります。 But there are other kinds of hobbies. 例えば、本を読むことです。 For example, reading books. ゲームをすることです。 Playing games. 寝ることが好きな人もいます。 Some people like sleeping. 食べることが好きな人もいます。 Some people love eating. 料理や運動が好きな人もいます。 Some people enjoy cooking or exercising. こういう趣味は、どこにいても同じですよね。 These kinds of hobbies are the same wherever you are, aren’t they? 日本でも、アメリカでも、中国でも同じです。 In Japan, in America, in China—it’s the same. だから、場所はあまり関係ない気がします。 So I feel the place doesn’t matter so much. それに、シンガポールはとても便利です。 Also, Singapore is very convenient. いろいろなものが、すぐに手に入ります。 You can get many things easily. 食べ物の種類も多いです。 There are many kinds of food. 私は、これは少し贅沢だと思いませんか。 Don’t you think this is quite a luxury? あと、こんな意見もあります。 There is also this kind of opinion. 「自然が少ない」という意見です。 Some people say there isn’t much nature. たしかに、それも分かります。 Yes, I understand that. 山やスキーが好きな人には、少し物足りないかもしれません。 If you like mountains or skiing, it may feel lacking. 日本にいれば、季節ごとに楽しめますから。 In Japan, you can enjoy those things each season. でも、考え方を変えるとどうでしょうか。 But what if we look at it differently? 一年中、暖かい国で、海の近くで、ゆっくり過ごしたい。 Some people want to live in a warm country and relax near the sea all year round. そういう生活にあこがれる人もいると思います。 I think some people dream of that kind of life. そういう人は、日本に住んだら残念に思うかもしれません。 Those people might feel disappointed living in Japan. それから、言語のこともあります。 There is also language. 日本では、英語や中国語を勉強している人が多いです。 In Japan, many people study English or Chinese. でも、使うチャンスが少ないです。 But there aren’t many chances to use them. 少しもったいないと感じる人もいます。 Some people feel it’s a bit of a waste. その点、シンガポールはいろいろな言葉が聞こえます。 In Singapore, you can hear many languages. 毎日の生活で使うこともできます。 You can use them in daily life. 色々な言葉を話してみたい人にとっては、とてもいい環境だと思います。 For people who want to try speaking different languages, it’s a great environment. なので、結論は、 So, in the end, 住んでいる場所が退屈かどうかは、 whether a place feels boring or not 考え方や、趣味によるということですね。 depends on your mindset and your hobbies. 同じ場所でも、楽しいと感じる人もいれば、 Even in the same place, some people feel it’s fun, 退屈だと感じる人もいます。 and others feel it’s boring. 私は、どうせなら、 For me, if possible, 楽しいところを見つけて生活したいなと思います。 I’d like to find enjoyable parts and live that way.
