2 Samuel, Week 16 Day 1: When Love Becomes a Lie Devotional Our culture loves to slap the word love onto things that are nothing but lust, but Scripture refuses to play that game. Love wants the good of another person. Lust wants to consume that person and move on. You see it laid bare in Amnon’s story in 2 Samuel 13. What he called love was destructive desire, and it ended up destroying both him and his sister Tamar. Lust is a liar, and it is good at the job. It tells you your desires are pure when they are nothing but selfish. It promises you everything and hands you emptiness. Real love does the opposite. It protects. It serves. It puts the other person’s good ahead of your own comfort and your own pleasure, every single time. Here is the good news: you do not have to be fooled. God’s Word draws the line between love and lust clearly, and it does not leave you guessing. When you anchor your heart in His truth instead of trusting your feelings, you can tell the difference and you can choose the path that honors God and honors the people around you. Bible Verse “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” — James 1:14–15 (ESV) Reflection Question How can you tell the difference between genuine love and selfish desire in your own relationships? Quote “Lust always begins with deception. Lust will call it self love.” Prayer Lord, give me eyes to see the difference between love and lust for what it is. Give me the wisdom to follow Your truth instead of my own deceptive heart.

This isn’t just a church slogan — it’s the heartbeat of every believer. You cannot accomplish the mission for which God redeemed you without living to see others saved through your engagement. This means we must engage a culture that needs to turn from sin and trust the gospel. Love demands that we speak truth, even when it’s hard to hear. Biblical orthodoxy without compassion is ugly, but the answer to cultural compromise isn’t to soften the truth — it’s to speak it with greater love. We walk through the world looking for opportunities to explain the hope of the gospel to people desperate to hear it. Every conversation, every relationship, every interaction is a potential gospel opportunity. The question isn’t whether you’re called to engage culture — you are. The question is whether you’ll trust God to direct the process and give you the words to say. Direction, Week 6 Day 4: Seeing the Harvest Devotional Jesus looked at the crowds and saw something His disciples missed — a harvest ready to be gathered. While others saw problems, opposition, and difficulty, Jesus saw opportunity. We live in what many call a ‘negative world’ where Christianity is increasingly viewed unfavorably. But have we forgotten that we’ve already won? The same Jesus who conquered death is still building His church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. That hostile coworker is someone God may yet save. That angry online opponent is someone for whom Christ died. The harvest opportunities are already placed in your life — you don’t even need to look for them. God has strategically positioned you where you are for such a time as this. Instead of cultural pessimism, we need biblical optimism. Yes, the world is broken and hostile to truth, but God specializes in transforming hearts that seem impossible to reach. Bible Verse “Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, “There are yet four months, then comes the harvest”? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.’” — John 4:34–35 (ESV) Reflection Question Who in your life seems most resistant to the gospel, and how might God be preparing their heart in ways you cannot see? Quote “Jesus sees all the negativity and he says, I’ve got them right where I want them. The harvest is plentiful.” Prayer Jesus, open my eyes to see the harvest opportunities around me. Give me hope and expectation that You are working in hearts I think are unreachable.

Direction, Week 6 Day 3: Making It About the Gospel Devotional Paul became all things to all people so that he might save some. This wasn’t compromise — it was strategic love. He understood that effective gospel communication requires meeting people where they are while never changing the message itself. The key to contextualization is simple: don’t make it about you, make it about the gospel. When we engage culture, we’re not trying to win people to our political party, our preferences, or our way of life. We’re introducing them to Jesus. This means learning to speak their language, understanding their questions, and addressing their real concerns with biblical truth. A farmer doesn’t get angry at the soil for being hard — he works it until it’s ready for seed. Similarly, we patiently work to understand the hearts and minds of those around us, always looking for opportunities to plant gospel seeds. The goal isn’t to make everyone like us; it’s to help them see their need for a Savior. Bible Verse “For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. Direction, Week 6 Day 2: Standing Out with Purpose Devotional Jesus called us to be salt, light, and a city on a hill. Notice what these three things have in common — they all stick out. Salt preserves and flavors. Light pierces darkness. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. If your Christian life blends seamlessly into the culture around you, something is wrong. This doesn’t mean being weird for the sake of being weird — that’s not a spiritual gift. It means living with such integrity, love, and truth that people notice something different about you. When Daniel refused the king’s food, he stood out. When the Hebrew boys wouldn’t bow to the statue, they stood out. When early Christians refused to participate in idol worship, they stood out. Standing out isn’t about being difficult or argumentative. It’s about living according to God’s design in a world that has rejected His ways. Your distinctiveness as a Christian should make people curious about the hope you carry. Bible Verse “You are the light of the world.
