The moment you stop waiting for permission and start believing in yourself, your whole life changes.

Mama Yaya lives by one main belief: “it doesn’t matter who doesn’t believe in you… it matters if you believe in you. The rest will settle into place.” Raised in Chicago, Mama Yaya is a singer/songwriter who uses music to tell real human stories. She’s been performing since the 5th grade, taking stages across Chicago and beyond, including performing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the Deaf & Loud Symphonic Experience. In 2018, she signed with Detroit producer Jake Bass and soon after earned a golden ticket on American Idol, making it through Hollywood Week. Her EP Broken Record climbed the charts, but more importantly, it connected with people on a deeper level. Her work reaches far beyond music. Mama Yaya openly speaks on trauma, mental health, and injustice, and is also a certified Grief, Loss & Trauma Coach. You may recognize her as Siren on Alter Ego, or from performances with Sofar Sounds, The NAMM Show, and alongside artists like Leon Bridges. She’s been featured in major publications, appeared on television, and recently became a Recording Academy member, attending the Grammys in 2025. But at the heart of everything she does, Mama Yaya uses her voice to make people feel seen, heard, and a little less alone. Don’t miss this inspiring conversation! Detroit Grit Entertainment Roundup

Detroit doesn’t do small talk, and neither do we. We start with hometown love, shoutouts, and a real Vinyl Fest recap that gets into what actually helps independent artists move product: better sound, quick vendor callouts, and DJs playing original tracks so people can buy what they just heard. We also share a proud moment for Detroit culture as our books get picked up for display at a Michigan music museum, plus updates on who’s performing, traveling, and building momentum in the city. Then we jump straight into the headlines that make entertainment news feel like a roller coaster. We talk Diddy comeback rumors, unpack a disturbing alleged timeline in a celebrity crime case, and get into Britney Spears’ “wet reckless” plea, probation terms, and why the court details matter more than the gossip. From there, we hit a public health curveball with a cruise ship Hantavirus scare and what it reveals about risk, tracing contacts, and how fast panic spreads. The back half stays lively and honest: Met Gala “Fashion Is Art” moments, Detroit Movement Festival updates, the reality of ticket prices, and why the Ticketmaster “blue dot flu” is changing fan behavior. We also get personal about ketamine, fentanyl, overdoses, and the growing pull toward being “California sober” in a world where everything is filmed. Ted Nagy-Programming Director for Aretha's Jazz cafe

Detroit is loud right now and not just on the speakers. We kick things off with a fast, opinionated entertainment news rundown that jumps from courtroom updates to the kind of headlines that make you double-check what’s real. We talk reputation, receipts, and how easily modern celebrity narratives get shaped by posts, screenshots, and the internet’s appetite for chaos. Then we hit tour and culture updates that matter to fans, including schedule shakeups, Detroit sightings, and local happenings worth putting on your calendar. The center of the show is a deep conversation with Ted Nagy, programming director at Aretha’s Jazz Cafe at Detroit’s Music Hall and a longtime force in the Detroit music scene with roots in artist relations at the Detroit International Jazz Festival. Ted breaks down what “booking a show” actually means: contracts, marketing, production details, stage plots, and being the person who has to make it all work night after night. If you’re an independent artist trying to book gigs, his advice is simple and sharp: communicate, respond, show up on time, and don’t ignore free help promoting your own show. We also get personal. Ted shares how sobriety changed his life and even the way he hears music, plus how he built a basement studio workflow to write, record, and release new songs on his terms. We listen to his track “Sunny Days” and talk about what makes a song feel alive. If you care about Detroit live music, music industry advice, songwriting, and real behind-the-scenes stories, this one is for you.
