I was raised both Buddhist and Catholic. Neither really stuck. I spent my twenties being “spiritual but not religious”. And otherwise prioritizing individuality over cultural constraints. Sexual desire is one of the few places where individual nature will hold out against collective culture. (Comedy being the other big one.) Most of my life I’ve been focused on the importance of individual expression over collective “oppression.” My explorations in sexuality have been a part of that. But lately (since having a family) I’ve been seeing the great value of the other side— there’s a lot to be gained from “belonging” to a greater framework, even at the expense of some individuality. So I was particularly interested in speaking with Yuval. Yuval is a sex educator who came from a Orthodox Jewish background.
