They believed that different societies 0:01:54.240,0:02:01.040 evolved along their specific historical contexts. They rejected the theory that 0:02:01.040,0:02:07.760 every society would be evolving along the same cultural progress sooner or later. 0:02:07.760,0:02:13.920 They argued that different societies adapted to their own uniquely different environments, 0:02:13.920,0:02:21.760 technological breakthroughs and outside cultural influences. Multilineal approach also rejected 0:02:21.760,0:02:29.520 any similarity between cultural and biological evolutions. It argued that cultural patterns 0:02:29.520,0:02:36.960 in far-off lands were genetically unrelated. But in the latter part of the twentieth century, 0:02:36.960,0:02:44.560 several multilineal anthropologists shifted their approach. Through numerous incremental 0:02:44.560,0:02:52.800 shifts in sociocultural hypotheses, they arrived at Marxism. Marxism made a speedy entry into the 0:02:52.800,0:02:59.680 world of politics adopted by almost half the population worldwide. The lens that it 0:02:59.680,0:03:07.360 used to look at sociocultural development was dialectical and historical materialism. But 0:03:07.360,0:03:13.760 toward the end of the twentieth century, it started crumbling down under its own weight. 0:03:14.480,0:03:21.280 You may know it better as the fall of the Soviet Union or the falling of the Berlin Wall. 0:03:21.280,0:03:27.280 The most modern twenty-first century anthropologists have taken another step to reject 0:03:27.280,0:03:34.880 the very concept of cultural evolution outright. They are rather exploring new approaches to the 0:03:34.880,0:03:42.960 relationship between culture and its environment. One of them is a general systems approach 0:03:42.960,0:03:51.920 exploring emergent systems including political, economic and social interactions among cultures. 0:03:51.920,0:03:58.640 As a special mention here, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins came up with his book The Selfish 0:03:58.640,0:04:07.120 Gene in 1976. Dawkins’ book was voted as the most influential science book of all time in 0:04:07.120,0:04:16.640 July 2017 on the 30th anniversary of the Royal Society. He proposed a gene-centered hypothesis of 0:04:16.640,0:04:23.840 sociocultural evolution stating that genetically related individuals cooperate the best between 0:04:23.840,0:04:32.080 them. And genes replicate themselves better when they themselves get benefitted, at times even at 0:04:32.080,0:04:39.200 the cost of the entire organism. ‘Selfish’ replication may model culture successfully 0:04:39.200,0:04:47.760 via memes that are self-replicating units of human cultural transmission analogous to genes. 0:04:47.760,0:04:52.560 This is where we are, at this moment, as far as understanding sociocultural 0:04:52.560,0:05:00.400 evolution is concerned. And, in my opinion, this is not sufficient. 0:05:00.400,0:05:06.800 ‘Multi-unilineal’ Approach I think we have missed something very basic. 0:05:06.800,0:05:14.800 We either look at sociocultural evolution as being entirely unilineal or else entirely mutilineal. 0:05:14.800,0:05:21.360 Reality looks to be somewhere in between. It very obviously has always been a combination of both, 0:05:21.360,0:05:28.720 in my opinion. Some parts of it have always been unilineal, not necessarily through intercultural 0:05:28.720,0:05:34.560 interaction but independently evolving on their own. Some other parts have certainly 0:05:34.560,0:05:41.840 been mutilineal, varying from culture to culture depending on their specific genetic histories and 0:05:41.840,0:05:49.200 environments. I would like to address them all with a new inclusive name ‘multi-unilineal’. 0:05:49.920,0:05:53.840 Let us look a little deeper into these multi-unilineal patterns of 0:05:53.840,0:06:01.200 sociocultural evolution all around the world. These are the patterns that essentially evolved 0:06:01.200,0:06:08.320 almost the same way, yet slightly differently, in their local hues throughout the world. 0:06:09.120,0:06:15.360 Surprisingly enough, all our sociocultural institutions have majorly been erected by 0:06:15.360,0:06:22.720 the mind and not through the dictates of the brain alone. The brain had worked independently 0:06:22.720,0:06:30.320 when it devised wearing leather and burning fire to ward off cold and cook food. The same 0:06:30.320,0:06:37.440 was true of inhabiting caves and inventing languages. And these were four supremely 0:06:37.440,0:06:46.320 intelligent inventions that all tribes and races arrived at in differently similar ways globally. 0:06:46.320,0:06:51.840 But the sociocultural structures erected by the mind were unfortunately not so 0:06:51.840,0:06:59.760 intelligent. They were flawed at best and harmful at worst in their design. 0:07:00.560,0:07:05.760 And why it happened so was because the mind subjectively attached itself to its 0:07:05.760,0:07:15.120 faulty apprehensions of threat to life, in other words to its self-preservative instincts. Hence, 0:07:15.120,0:07:21.760 it cunningly took control of the brain’s activity in its fearful stupidity, thereby turning human 0:07:21.760,0:07:31.040 needs into wants. All these structures were multi-unilenial in their evolutionary process. 0:07:31.040,0:07:35.920 Sociocultural Chakras As I was building up my 0:07:35.920,0:07:44.800 case against our sociocultural structures getting erected by the mind, an analogy dawned upon me. 0:07:44.800,0:07:52.240 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Before I come to the analogy, let us take a little 0:07:52.240,0:08:01.680 detour. Abraham Maslow came up with ‘A Theory of Human Motivation’ in the year 1943. Later, 0:08:01.680,0:08:10.000 he refined it in ‘Motivation and Personality’ in 1954 introducing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. 0:08:10.000,0:08:15.760 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs comprises physiological needs, safety, love 0:08:15.760,0:08:22.480 and belonging and esteem as deficiency needs, and cognition as a growth need. 0:08:23.600,0:08:31.520 Growth needs further include aesthetic, self-actualization and transcendence needs. 0:08:31.520,0:08:38.800 And now, let’s come back to my analogy. I find that the lowest two deficiency needs, 0:08:38.800,0:08:44.800 namely “physiological needs” and “safety needs”, are parallel to the concerns of the root chakra 0:08:44.800,0:08:51.760 within the chakra system. The third need from the bottom, “love and belonging”, parallels 0:08:51.760,0:09:00.800 the heart chakra. The fourth deficiency need, “esteem”, is akin to the throat chakra. Moving 0:09:00.800,0:09:08.400 to Maslow’s growth needs, “cognitive needs” parallel solar plexus chakra while “aesthetic”, 0:09:08.400,0:09:15.680 “self-actualization” and “transcendence” needs find their chakra equivalents in sacral, 0:09:15.680,0:09:23.600 third-eye and crown chakras, respectively. Now that we have established that Maslow’s 0:09:23.600,0:09:28.640 Hierarchy of Needs is analogous to the chakra system, I would like to 0:09:28.640,0:09:36.480 bring our attention to a second analogy. We know that an individual autonomous mind 0:09:36.480,0:09:42.720 generates closed biological chakras in the human body by corrupting skeletal anatomy. 0:09:43.280,0:09:49.760 I asked myself if a collective autonomous mind could have generated similarly closed 0:09:49.760,0:09:55.520 sociocultural chakras in human society. The modus operandi could have been the 0:09:55.520,0:10:03.040 corruption of social needs into societal wants. Things started getting distorted since the very 0:10:03.040,0:10:12.400 beginning of our evolution into Homo sapiens. It all started with pursuing cognitive needs. We, 0:10:12.400,0:10:20.720 as a society, cognized reality within what was a suffocating environment dotted with threats and 0:10:20.720,0:10:29.840 challenges. And that perceived reality continues till date. Humanity is yet to take a sigh of 0:10:29.840,0:10:38.400 relief, thereby seriously corrupting its breathing pattern. It was this corruption that gave birth to 0:10:38.400,0:10:46.080 a blocked sociocultural solar plexus chakra. Acting out of the mind’s fearful perception 0:10:46.080,0:10:53.520 of so-called threats and challenges, humanity has always been in a hurry to control the environment 0:10:53.520,0:11:01.040 which is a mirage in itself. Just like the solar plexus charka leads to asthma and other diseases 0:11:01.040,0:11:08.720 in the body, this sociocultural solar plexus chakra, i.e., hurry to control the environment, 0:11:08.720,0:11:17.440 gives rise to social ‘diseases’ such as the ‘rat race’. And thus, humanity handed over the reins 0:11:17.440,0:11:25.920 of cognition to its collective autonomous mind instead of a spontaneous collective brain. We know 0:11:25.920,0:11:33.200 that an open solar plexus chakra means renewing the brain continuously and thus energizing it 0:11:33.200,0:11:41.760 cyclically. Unfortunately for us, since our sociocultural solar plexus chakra got closed, 0:11:41.760,0:11:50.640 it left the collective autonomous mind stuck at its aggressive cognitive wants rather than needs. 0:11:50.640,0:11:58.320 These wants individualized personal ownership of resources used to fulfill genuine social needs 0:11:58.320,0:12:06.640 before. As this personal ownership of resources assumes a bigger-than-necessary stature, social 0:12:06.640,0:12:15.360 needs start turning into personal wants. Needs are the realm of the brain while the mind is the abode 0:12:15.360,0:12:23.280 of wants. Thus, they get corrupted and end up in sociocultural chakras in the hands of a collective 0:12:23.280,0:12:32.880 autonomous mind. After all, human society is just a collective extension of multiple human bodies. 0:12:32.880,0:12:39.280 And these sociocultural chakras would tend to block collective human energy flow exactly like 0:12:39.280,0:12:47.840 biological chakras block individual energy flow. Let us now combine the above two analogies, 0:12:47.840,0:12:54.480 i.e. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs vis-a-vis chakra system + sociocultural 0:12:54.480,0:13:01.280 chakras mirroring individual chakras. When individual energy flow gets blocked 0:13:01.280,0:13:09.600 at the base of the chakra system, it results in a closed root chakra. Similarly, when the collective 0:13:09.600,0:13:16.640 human energy flow gets blocked at the base of the chakra equivalent in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, 0:13:16.640,0:13:25.360 it does so at the lowest two levels of social needs, i.e., physiological and safety needs. 0:13:25.360,0:13:31.520 Same would be true about the deficiency needs of love and belonging and esteem needs as well. 0:13:32.320,0:13:39.040 It is my contention that we, Homo sapiens, find ourselves today struggling with an 0:13:39.040,0:13:47.200 imbalance in the mind-brain equilibrium as we go along Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs from the 0:13:47.200,0:13:53.360 lowest (physiological) deficiency needs to the highest (transcendence) growth needs. Individuals 0:13:53.360,0:14:01.280 and societies that are stuck in making ends meet, i.e., meeting their physiological needs, tend to 0:14:01.280,0:14:09.360 operate primarily from the brain. As they ‘climb’ up the Hierarchy and their deficiency needs are 0:14:09.360,0:14:17.280 met, a major shift seems to occur. This is where the mind starts taking over and the brain’s 0:14:17.280,0:14:23.760 functionality starts getting stunted inflicting the lower chakras as well, along with the higher 0:14:23.760,0:14:33.840 ones. In other words, needs start yielding to wants. It is no surprise, then, that most of 0:14:33.840,0:14:41.120 the growth needs are governed by the concerns of the mind way more than those of the brain. 0:14:41.120,0:14:47.680 Real Needs Overshadowed by Greedy Wants This had its debilitating effect on the 0:14:47.680,0:14:53.600 sociocultural equivalent of sacral chakra, namely aesthetic needs, 0:14:53.600,0:15:02.480 as well. And it did so by negatively affecting the quality of sex that humanity was meant to enjoy. 0:15:02.480,0:15:09.600 When sex gets frustrated, it tends to take refuge in its sublimation through arts in 0:15:09.600,0:15:18.560 creative and aesthetic pursuits. This sublimation is the handiwork of none other than the mind! 0:15:18.560,0:15:25.040 In the process of sublimation, however, the mind does lose a little bit of its control as emotions 0:15:25.040,0:15:31.120 give way to passion and sexual frustration yields to a broader creative perception. 0:15:32.000,0:15:38.560 This works, but only partially, as a therapeutic process that addresses the aesthetic needs 0:15:38.560,0:15:47.360 in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs at an individual level. In society, this partial therapy addresses 0:15:47.360,0:15:55.040 this sociocultural sacral chakra in the form of cinema, poetry and other artistic expressions. 0:15:55.760,0:16:01.600 However, the unaddressed part of this chakra results in the social disease that we know as 0:16:01.600,0:16:10.160 ‘consumerism’. And we have even given it a rather ironic name, ‘retail therapy’. 0:16:10.160,0:16:18.320 No wonder slogans like “the more, the better” appear to provide solace to our frustrations. 0:16:18.320,0:16:25.200 Moving higher along the Hierarchy, the growth need of self actualization aims at discovering 0:16:25.200,0:16:32.320 one’s inherent talents and developing them further. It results in achieving one’s full 0:16:32.320,0:16:40.000 potential as far as socially productive soft skills are concerned. This is synonymous with 0:16:40.000,0:16:47.360 the concerns of the third eye chakra. However, once corrupted by the mind at a social level, 0:16:47.360,0:16:53.440 it leads to an analogous collective third eye charka resulting in social ‘diseases’ such as 0:16:53.440,0:17:00.400 ‘professional qualifications’ as a want that is detached from the original need. 0:17:00.400,0:17:05.600 Transcendence needs are the ultimate that an individual in a society can cultivate, 0:17:05.600,0:17:13.440 giving oneself to something beyond oneself. It enables one to create one’s personal heaven for 0:17:13.440,0:17:23.120 oneself. At a social level, it parallels the sociocultural crown chakra which, when closed, 0:17:23.120,0:17:30.560 leads to the social malaise of ‘acute insensitivity’. Consequently, opening this 0:17:30.560,0:17:38.320 chakra sets the highest levels of collective human consciousness. Simultaneously, it sets 0:17:38.320,0:17:46.640 all the lower chakras open as well, automatically addressing their related sociocultural ailments. 0:17:46.640,0:17:52.400 This has the potential to turn human life on earth into a collective heaven. 0:17:53.120,0:18:01.440 However, in reality, the collective mind fragments itself exactly like the individual biological mind 0:18:01.440,0:18:09.440 and, thus, belittles every single real need in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and, by extension, 0:18:09.440,0:18:16.240 its analogous sociocultural chakra. When it comes to our collective needs, 0:18:16.240,0:18:22.640 human societies use various ‘currencies’ to enable exchange of these needs between their individuals 0:18:22.640,0:18:30.640 or groups. It is these currencies that we used to fulfill real needs which later started assuming 0:18:30.640,0:18:39.120 bigger stature in an individual mind, shifting the focus from needs to wants. As a result, those 0:18:39.120,0:18:45.280 currencies got corrupted away from their original purpose and became ends in themselves as opposed 0:18:45.280,0:18:52.880 to serving as mere means toward the ends which have always remained as those underlying needs. 0:18:52.880,0:18:59.280 These corrupted currencies have led to several institutions in our societies that, 0:18:59.280,0:19:06.880 I contend, are the physical manifestations of the underlying sociocultural chakras. 0:19:06.880,0:19:13.520 Within the construct that I have presented above, we can now look at sociocultural evolution in 0:19:13.520,0:19:20.080 light of genuine needs getting usurped by the mere wants for their corrupted currencies. 0:19:20.800,0:19:28.240 Thanks for listening to this episode of Skeletal Leap: A Living Adventure! It is a muscle located between the thoracic and the abdominal cavities. 0:11:14.960,0:11:22.560 It comprises slow and deep inhalation through the nose followed by slow and complete exhalation. 0:11:22.560,0:11:29.200 Diaphragmatic breathing improves the blood flow while reducing pulse rate and blood pressure. It 0:11:29.200,0:11:34.560 also relaxes the vagal nerve and optimizes the sympathetic mode of the nervous system which 0:11:34.560,0:11:41.360 is the source of a ‘fight or flight’ response. It is also one of the best cures for belly fat 0:11:41.360,0:11:48.880 in particular and weight loss in general. This is 0:13:23.520,0:13:31.920 because we are trying to kill the mind by the mind itself. Why would the mind ever commit suicide? 0:13:32.720,0:13:40.400 It is happy being in control not only of our psychology but also our biology. It does so by 0:13:40.400,0:13:47.520 turning our perceptions and urges mechanical. It is only possible to empty the mind using 0:13:47.520,0:13:55.360 itself when it is posed with an impending emergency that it has no solution for. Consequently, it gets forced to surrender its 0:14:02.480,0:14:10.480 reign over any action that could get rid of the said scenario. Ultimately, in such a situation, 0:14:10.480,0:14:17.120 the brain takes charge and performs the appropriate action to come out of that scenario. 0:14:17.120,0:14:23.920 The Story of My Mind Emptying Itself And Handing Over The Charge to My Brain in An Emergency 0:14:24.560,0:14:30.320 I remember a story from my life when my spirit of adventure posed a similar challenge to my mind. 0:14:30.320,0:14:36.880 And my mind just resigned. But my spirit still went ahead with my brain alone and 0:14:36.880,0:14:44.720 faced the challenge. My mind was absolutely emptied in the process and, thus, held back. 0:14:44.720,0:14:50.640 It was in the year 1992 that I visited a beautiful, high altitude valley in 0:14:50.640,0:14:57.040 the Himalayas named Manali. I had already booked a cottage for a month-long stay over 0:14:57.040,0:15:06.560 there. We were three in our family; my wife, my six-year-old daughter and I. We were enjoying 0:15:06.560,0:15:13.040 our stay, doing something new each day. After around ten days, we thought of going 0:15:13.040,0:15:19.280 on an unconventional trek in the valley - a trek along the untrodden side of the River 0:15:19.280,0:15:22.800 Beas that flowed through the valley. There was no road on that side of the river. Any 0:15:22.800,0:15:28.160 roads that existed would be on the other side of the river from our trek. 0:15:28.160,0:15:33.040 Regardless, we started our trek and kept moving along the river, 0:15:33.040,0:15:42.640 upstream. I was looking for a 0:15:58.000,0:16:05.600 bridle path, hoping to climb up a little and then come down to move further along the river. That 0:16:05.600,0:16:12.240 way, we could have circumvented the sharp turn and climbed down to the river ahead of the sharp turn. 0:16:12.960,0:16:19.120 As I was investigating the visible bridle paths, I spotted a man standing at the hilltop 0:16:19.120,0:16:27.840 looking curiously toward us. I shouted, aiming my voice in his direction, “Hey!” 0:16:27.840,0:16:34.240 “Hey!” the man shouted back from the hilltop. I explained to him in my sign language 0:16:34.240,0:16:38.320 what we were up to. Seemingly a local, 0:16:38.320,0:16:44.480 he immediately understood what we wanted. He threw a fleeting look along the bridle paths 0:16:44.480,0:16:52.000 up the hill. Then he looked down around the river bend, and then waved at us to climb up. 0:16:52.000,0:17:01.360 As we started climbing up, I spotted him coming down toward us as well. That surprised me a bit. 0:17:01.360,0:17:08.960 But as we climbed up a little further, I realized why he had made his way down. As we reached a 0:17:08.960,0:17:17.520 nearly horizontal patch lined up with a nearly vertical rock, we found him standing up there. 0:17:17.520,0:17:23.360 What a helping spirit combined with a curious involvement! He smiled, 0:17:23.360,0:17:31.040 sitting atop the approximately 7 feet high rock tilted at around 105o from the patch. 0:17:31.920,0:17:39.680 “I had seen this rock from above and I knew you would need my help to climb it,” he said, smiling. 0:17:39.680,0:17:47.840 “Thanks a lot!” I felt grateful. As I looked down once from where we were standing, I found 0:17:47.840,0:17:55.520 us to be exactly over the river-bend which meant that, by then, we had climbed a few hundred feet. 0:17:56.240,0:18:02.400 The man lied down on his stomach on the horizontal patch atop the rock. From there, 0:18:02.400,0:18:10.480 he hung his arms down along the slope of the rock. First, my wife held his hands and I pushed her 0:18:10.480,0:18:17.120 from behind as he pulled her up to the top. As the patch above the top was comparatively 0:18:17.120,0:18:24.640 narrow, he made her sit a little away on a gentle slope. Then he came back to the rock-top and lied 0:18:24.640,0:18:32.800 down on his stomach hanging his arms down, again. This time, I lifted my daughter and pushed her up 0:18:32.800,0:18:40.320 from behind as he pulled her up easily. He made her sit along with my wife and came back to the 0:18:40.320,0:18:48.400 rock-top again. As he lied down on his stomach a third time hanging his arms down to pull me up 0:18:48.400,0:18:57.360 now, he realized it wouldn’t work. “Oh!” he exclaimed, disappointed. 0:18:57.360,0:19:03.280 By then I, too, had realized that we had not accounted for this scenario. 0:19:03.280,0:19:09.200 With my wife and my daughter, I was there below to push them up. But now, 0:19:09.200,0:19:16.240 I was alone with no one to do the same for me. The man and I looked into each other’s eyes 0:19:16.240,0:19:21.760 and then down at the river below flowing with roaring ferocity. 0:19:21.760,0:19:28.800 “We forgot this,” I said. “Now?” he asked me. 0:19:28.800,0:19:35.440 “It’s risky,” I said with a sigh. “Disappointing,” he sighed back 0:19:35.440,0:19:42.320 dropping his head on the top of the rock. “Hey! Is it really impossible?” I looked 0:19:42.320,0:19:51.200 at the height and the slope of the rock. “Not exactly, but yes, almost!” he opined. 0:19:51.200,0:20:00.720 “Why don’t we do it! I can push myself up with all my might,” my adventure bug bit me further. 0:20:00.720,0:20:06.480 “I don’t bother about myself. But you have a family along. If you aren’t able to make it the 0:20:06.480,0:20:14.000 very first time, we both will be down there in the river. We will be flown away by its gushing 0:20:14.000,0:20:22.080 waters…not to be found even as dead bodies, ever! A drowning man catches at a straw. So, 0:20:22.080,0:20:29.120 you’ll end up pulling me down as well!” he explained what all it could entail. 0:20:29.120,0:20:35.200 “Oh, then send them back and we will go down the way we came up from,” I felt concerned 0:20:35.200,0:20:42.800 about a stranger’s life not to be jeopardized. “But I won’t feel good!” he exclaimed as he 0:20:42.800,0:20:49.520 looked into my eyes intently. I kept looking back into his. 0:20:49.520,0:20:55.120 “Okay, let’s do it. Just take care to sync your push with my pull exactly at the same 0:20:55.120,0:21:02.720 moment,” he finally gave his verdict. “Think twice before you say yes,” I said. 0:21:03.760,0:21:10.560 “You too!” came his reply. “Ready?” I asked. 0:21:10.560,0:21:14.960 “Ready?” he asked. We both started 0:21:14.960,0:21:24.320 counting aloud, “ One, two, three!” As we counted three, I found myself lying 0:21:24.320,0:21:32.400 along him up on the patch at the top of the rock. Two sighs of relief from the two of us and we 0:21:32.400,0:21:41.280 smiled calmly looking at each other’s faces! I did it. In fact, my body did it. I didn’t 0:21:41.280,0:21:47.280 know how I had done it. It was exactly like what that middle-aged mechanic in my story in 0:21:47.280,0:21:54.240 Episode 19 had done. He, too, didn’t have any clue to how he had done what he had. 0:21:55.040,0:22:00.640 My wife and daughter were oblivious to what we both had come up through. 0:22:00.640,0:22:07.200 My mind was just empty and it remained so for a long while after. 0:22:07.200,0:22:11.920 But habits die hard. The entire pattern comes back to the same 0:22:11.920,0:22:20.160 square one once the emergency gets over. Hence, though imminent emergencies can empty 0:22:20.160,0:22:28.240 our mind in a flash of a second, they aren’t a permanent modus operandi. But yes, they can give 0:22:28.240,0:22:35.920 us an instant glimpse of what an empty mind feels and works like. They can certainly demonstrate 0:22:35.920,0:22:43.840 the superiority of any action done on our part without any doubt about it. That was what had 0:22:43.840,0:22:52.000 happened in the above-mentioned story as well as in the mechanic’s story mentioned in Episode 19. 0:22:52.000,0:23:00.160 How to Empty The Mind Permanently But then, how can the mind be permanently emptied? 0:23:00.160,0:23:07.280 Remember the firsthand account of a first timer in skydiving quoted before in Episode 20? 0:23:07.280,0:23:16.240 I repeat it here for your convenience: I was OUT… everything mentally ended… over… 0:23:16.240,0:23:25.840 started… me… perhaps more dead than alive… perhaps more alive than I will ever be… breathing just as 0:23:25.840,0:23:35.600 I had been taught… wind… wind and breath… until wind and breath became indiscernible, became as 0:23:35.600,0:23:45.520 one… and yes, almost weightless… it was true! … weightless and so surreal… there was the earth, 0:23:45.520,0:23:54.960 neither coming at me, nor me at it, … no up… no down… no me, in the ego sense of me, 0:23:54.960,0:24:03.200 just some thoughtless consciousness… and yes, it was awesome simply to be… or not. 0:24:03.200,0:24:10.800 The sky was in my lungs and it never once occurred to me would the parachute open. 0:24:10.800,0:24:19.520 It is a perfect example of a mind having gone empty. And what a tremendous experience this was! 0:24:19.520,0:24:27.600 But unfortunately, this, too, stays only for a maximum duration of 6-7 minutes. That is while 0:24:27.600,0:24:34.880 the skydiver is falling free before the parachute opens. We could extend this time with the help of 0:24:34.880,0:24:43.760 a virtual reality simulator without even having a real skydiving session. But how long for? 0:24:43.760,0:24:48.960 We could even consider improving the quality of virtual free-fall simulator as compared 0:24:48.960,0:24:55.360 to a real skydiving session. That could even entail removing the decelerating 0:24:55.360,0:25:01.360 effect of air with a better control on experiencing acceleration due to gravity. 0:25:02.240,0:25:07.200 We could hypothesize that such a perfect simulation for a certain minimum time 0:25:07.200,0:25:13.120 might empty the mind permanently as well. In fact, I am already working on a project 0:25:13.120,0:25:20.240 that proposes to testify this hypothesis under strict laboratory conditions. 0:25:20.240,0:25:27.200 But we cannot wait for this hypothesis to get proved correct. We do have a surer method 0:25:27.200,0:25:33.360 though a little slower than the proposed hypothesis, at least for the time being. 0:25:33.360,0:25:40.000 And that is what I have already mentioned in this episode. We can easily keep emptying 0:25:40.000,0:25:47.440 our mind continuously with every single extended exhalation when all our chakras are open. From a 0:25:47.440,0:25:54.800 vitalistic angle, it amounts to sending periodical surges of kundalini from an open root chakra to 0:25:54.800,0:26:02.880 an open crown chakra. From a materialistic angle, it amounts to sending periodical surges of neural 0:26:02.880,0:26:08.960 communication from the gut to the brain. Whatever it might be, but it does fill the 0:26:08.960,0:26:16.720 crown of the head with inexplicable joy through every single extended exhalation. Along with joy, 0:26:16.720,0:26:22.560 it also embellishes the brain with newer energy and newer insights. 0:26:22.560,0:26:29.120 And every surge of this inexplicable joy keeps the mind emptied for its duration, in fact a 0:26:29.120,0:26:38.160 little longer. Before it starts waning, the next surge appears with the next extended exhalation, 0:26:38.160,0:26:41.722 reinforcing the mind’s emptiness again. In case we ever miss the sequence, the sky 0:26:41.722,0:26:41.995 is not going to fall loose on earth. We can pick the thread of breath up from wherever it right 0:26:41.995,0:26:42.240 now is and restart the sequence once again. But intraocular lenses are just inanimate matter and not animate like your 0:04:57.840,0:05:04.960 natural crystalline lenses. They will simply not let you see near clear as you cannot manipulate 0:05:04.960,0:05:12.640 them at all. You will need a pair of near vision glasses after the surgery in any case.” 0:05:12.640,0:05:18.240 “I will still like to use a pair of outside glasses for correcting my distant vision. My logic convinced him that what I 0:05:50.560,0:05:55.840 was asking for was not unethical. And I took a sigh of relief as it was a question of my entire 0:06:08.720,0:06:15.360 research getting wasted otherwise. All my preliminary tests including 0:06:15.360,0:06:21.360 ophthalmological and physiological status got checked. A day before the surgery, the surgeon 0:06:21.360,0:06:27.600 informed me that everything was alright. He said my natural crystalline lenses would be 0:06:27.600,0:06:35.520 replaced with intraocular lenses of diopter power +18.5. It was exactly the same diopter 0:06:35.520,0:06:45.200 power that my natural crystalline lenses had. On Tuesday, 15 February 2022, my right eye got 0:06:45.200,0:06:51.200 operated on. As soon as the surgery got completed, the surgeon asked me to open 0:06:51.200,0:06:58.800 my eyes. As I complied, I immediately saw everything much brighter as well as crystal 0:06:58.800,0:07:05.200 clear in the field of my vision. It had gotten brighter owing to the surgery done on my eye. 0:07:05.200,0:07:11.040 And as far as clarity of vision was concerned, replacing my natural crystalline lens with 0:07:11.040,0:07:17.600 the intraocular lens of the same diopter power had left no negative effect on it. 0:07:18.320,0:07:23.280 It was a moment of extreme elation for me. Not optimizing my vision 0:07:23.280,0:07:33.680 for distance had shown its favorable result. The next day, on Wednesday, 16 February 2022, 0:07:33.680,0:07:41.280 my left eye got operated with similar results. As soon as both my eyes got intraocular lenses 0:07:41.280,0:07:46.960 inserted in them, I went impatient. I could not stop my temptation of trying 0:07:46.960,0:07:54.000 to read near with them. And lo! To the utter astonishment of my surgeon as well as of mine, 0:07:54.000,0:08:04.400 I was able to read everything close clearly too. The next day, on Thursday, 17 February 2022, 0:08:04.400,0:08:10.240 my vision was officially tested for distance and for near reading. 0:08:10.240,0:08:14.880 Each eye was individually tested separately. Both of them recorded 0:08:15.440,0:08:23.440 20/20 vision for distance and N6 for near reading. I asked my surgeon how he would explain this in 0:08:23.440,0:08:30.160 light of the accommodation process theorized by German ophthalmology. According to this theory, 0:08:30.160,0:08:37.120 it should have been impossible for me to read near, especially with N6 acuity. 0:08:37.120,0:08:42.400 He simply raised his hands in utter astonishment, saying, “I just don’t know 0:08:42.400,0:08:49.760 how you are reading near so clear.” It was a miracle, so to say. 0:08:49.760,0:08:55.360 I asked him if I was his first patient not requiring near vision glasses from him after 0:08:55.360,0:09:04.800 cataract removal surgery. He said I was, indeed, the only one to do so through his entire career. 0:09:04.800,0:09:09.520 The Real Scientific Process of Visual Accommodation 0:09:09.520,0:09:18.560 The question was how on earth I was able to see near so clear with inanimate lenses in my eyes. 0:09:18.560,0:09:23.520 There was only one way in which it could be explained scientifically. 0:09:24.160,0:09:31.440 It was that I was able to elongate my eyeball in order to see clear while reading near. And then, 0:09:31.440,0:09:37.600 I was able to turn it back to near spherical while seeing at a distance. 0:09:37.600,0:09:42.800 According to this explanation, the lens has no role to play in the process of 0:09:42.800,0:09:49.680 accommodation. It is the eyeball that effects and controls accommodation. 0:09:49.680,0:09:52.880 It was about a hundred years ago that Dr. 0:09:52.880,0:09:59.040 W. H. Bates had propounded the same. Here is a quote from him: 0:09:59.040,0:10:05.360 During more than thirty years of clinical experience, I have not observed a single fact that 0:10:05.360,0:10:11.040 was not in harmony with the belief that the lens and the ciliary muscle have nothing to do with 0:10:11.040,0:10:17.680 accommodation and that the changes in the shape of the eyeball upon which errors of refraction 0:10:17.680,0:10:24.560 depend are not permanent. My clinical observations have of themselves been sufficient to demonstrate 0:10:24.560,0:10:31.680 this fact. The two oblique muscles 0:10:58.000,0:11:03.600 are there in the shape of a belt around the middle of the eyeball. The muscle above is 0:11:03.600,0:11:11.360 called ‘superior’ and the one below, ‘inferior’. The four recti muscles pass along the depth of the 0:11:11.360,0:11:19.840 eyeball at the top, bottom, left and right sides. They are attached to the sclerotic coat at one end 0:11:19.840,0:11:26.160 and the bone surrounding the optic nerve at the other. These four muscles at the top, bottom, left 0:11:26.160,0:11:34.800 and right sides of the eyeball are ‘superior’, ‘inferior’, ‘internal’ and “external” recti. 0:11:34.800,0:11:40.400 When we contract the oblique muscles, the eyes can easily read near. 0:11:40.400,0:11:44.480 But when this constriction becomes unconsciously habitual, the eyes 0:11:44.480,0:11:51.200 cannot see clear at a distance. This condition is called myopia and is generally combined with 0:11:51.200,0:11:58.240 astigmatism which means different levels of constriction in various circular degrees. 0:11:58.240,0:12:02.240 Also, when recti muscles are kept constricted habitually, 0:12:02.240,0:12:09.840 the eyes are not able to read at close proximity clearly. Letters go blurred as in hyperopia and 0:12:09.840,0:12:17.360 presbyopia, and distorted as in astigmatism. When the crown chakra and the third eye chakra 0:12:17.360,0:12:24.240 are blocked, these are the muscles that get affected first. Thereafter, the rest of them, 0:12:24.240,0:12:32.320 including those in the jaws, on the eyebrows, and around temporomandibular joints get affected. 0:12:32.320,0:12:37.920 Surprisingly, there is a direct physiological connection between the muscles on the eyeballs 0:12:37.920,0:12:45.600 and the rest of muscles in the skull! The major ones among them are the muscles named frontalis, 0:12:45.600,0:12:52.560 temporalis and occipitalis. By relaxing these three muscles via maneuvering the mandible, 0:12:52.560,0:13:00.480 we can relax the muscles on the eyeballs as well. Once that is done, we can achieve full voluntary 0:13:00.480,0:13:07.200 control on the entire process of accommodation. This is how we can achieve central fixation of the 0:13:07.200,0:13:16.560 eyes and get rid of all the errors of refraction. The Role That Dr. Bates Played A Hundred Years Ago 0:13:16.560,0:13:24.480 Around a hundred years ago in the year 1920, Dr. W. H. Bates, an ophthalmologist published a book. 0:13:24.480,0:13:31.440 It was titled “The Cure of Imperfect Sight by Treatment without Glasses”. The book was 0:13:31.440,0:13:38.240 an account of his case studies which involved curing the vision of people and enabling them 0:13:38.240,0:13:44.480 to get rid of their glasses. It was also a logical analysis of how vision goes bad in 0:13:44.480,0:13:51.520 the first place and how to cure it. With his analysis, he happened to challenge mainstream 0:13:51.520,0:13:58.800 ophthalmology on its theoretical premises. Mainstream ophthalmology had always maintained 0:13:58.800,0:14:05.440 that vision, once gone bad, could never be cured. It still maintains the same premise 0:14:05.440,0:14:12.640 to date. Hence it considers wearing glasses as the primary solution. It has also come up with 0:14:12.640,0:14:21.280 its surgical derivative named LASIK. In LASIK, they sculpt the cornea in the shape of a lens as 0:14:21.280,0:14:27.760 per the vision prescription. It simply turns the cornea into an additional lens in front of the 0:14:27.760,0:14:35.920 eye’s main lens without wearing glasses. Not a big deal! It is rather ineffective in certain cases, 0:14:35.920,0:14:41.600 especially in the long run. I know many such people whose errors of refraction 0:14:41.600,0:14:49.120 returned a few years after getting LASIK done. But mainstream ophthalmology chose not to respond 0:14:49.120,0:14:57.760 to Dr. Bates’ challenge. It rather chose to ignore him in an attempt to isolate and ridicule him. 0:14:57.760,0:15:04.640 The question that arises is why, after all, mainstream ophthalmology chose to ignore its 0:15:04.640,0:15:11.920 own comrade. Was it just because it thought he was doing something nonsensical? Far from it, 0:15:11.920,0:15:19.680 his questions were not illogical. Quite to the contrary, he was getting positive results! Why, 0:15:19.680,0:15:24.880 then, did his own parent organization ignore him like a step child? 0:15:24.880,0:15:32.160 The answer, as often is the case, was a conflict of interests between the two. 0:15:32.160,0:15:37.920 And mainstream ophthalmology continues that same antagonistic approach toward his research 0:15:37.920,0:15:45.600 and findings at the time of delivering this podcast…even almost a century later! 0:15:45.600,0:15:50.400 What would mainstream ophthalmology gain from this antagonism? 0:15:50.400,0:15:57.600 The answer seems to lie in a covert conspiracy as such. It is possibly scared of losing a luxurious 0:15:57.600,0:16:04.080 business that it is the sole beneficiary of. Modern ophthalmology is a gigantic, 0:16:04.080,0:16:10.560 multi-billion-dollar industry. H. Bates ignored his isolation by mainstream ophthalmology. He went 0:17:11.920,0:17:17.600 on treating his patients. And, by the time he died in 1931, he had already 0:17:17.600,0:17:25.040 cured thousands of them. They had gotten rid of their glasses as they didn’t need them anymore. 0:17:25.040,0:17:31.600 After his death, many volunteers took up his work and continued treating patients. 0:17:31.600,0:17:38.720 It has now become an institution in itself that promotes alternative ophthalmology, defying the 0:17:38.720,0:17:45.920 mainstream authority. These volunteers have kept Bates’ legacy alive through almost a century after 0:17:45.920,0:17:55.280 his death. The Bates Method, as it is famous now, has sculpted a strong niche for itself. 0:17:55.280,0:18:02.080 But there is a problem here. The Bates Method, in general, is very slow in improving vision. 0:18:02.080,0:18:06.960 Very few people afflicted with errors of refraction in their faulty eyes have that 0:18:06.960,0:18:14.400 kind of patience. They find wearing glasses a ready-made solution and surrender to it. 0:18:14.400,0:18:20.160 They don’t know that, by wearing glasses, they are forcing their eyes to keep seeing through them 0:18:20.160,0:18:26.640 for life. An eye must keep seeing inherently wrong in order to see clear from behind the 0:18:26.640,0:18:34.560 lens fitted on it. Therefore, they kill any probability of vision improvement for good. 0:18:34.560,0:18:41.440 How I Was Able to Change Bates Method of Central Fixation from A Mental Procedure to A Physical One 0:18:41.440,0:18:48.560 As far back as my early childhood, I was diagnosed with myopia. My left eye required a lens of minus 0:18:48.560,0:18:56.000 5 diopter to see clear. Luckily, my right eye was 20/20. So my optometrist gave me a 0:18:56.000,0:19:01.760 pair of glasses which I never liked wearing. I could see things with my right eye without 0:19:01.760,0:19:08.800 any problem. Hence I put my glasses in the drawer of my table and never took them out. 0:19:08.800,0:19:16.160 A few years passed. I finished my engineering studies and got appointed to a government job. 0:19:16.160,0:19:19.120 I was instructed to get my physical examination done 0:19:19.120,0:19:24.240 in a specified government hospital before I would begin on the job. So, 0:19:24.240,0:19:31.520 I went for it, aware of the fact that one of my eyes needed a minus 5 diopter lens. 0:19:31.520,0:19:37.360 But I was in for both a pleasant and an unpleasant shock at the same time! 0:19:37.360,0:19:44.800 The doctor told me that both my eyes had myopia requiring minus 2.25 diopter lenses. 0:19:45.600,0:19:54.000 The world went upside down as well as downside up for me. My normal 20/20 vision in my right eye had 0:19:54.000,0:20:01.600 deteriorated to require minus 2.25 diopter lens to see clear. But my faulty eye had 0:20:01.600,0:20:11.280 spontaneously improved itself from requiring minus 5 diopter lens to just minus 2.25 diopter now. 0:20:11.280,0:20:17.040 How did my eyes manage to do so on their own without my conscious awareness of it? It was 0:20:17.040,0:20:21.760 against the very basic premise upon which all of mainstream ophthalmology 0:20:21.760,0:20:27.120 had structured its existence. According to Jessica Lewis, 0:20:27.120,0:20:34.560 optometrist from Illinois College of Optometry: Not wearing glasses, also, cannot change the 0:20:34.560,0:20:40.480 shape of your eye, so if you stop wearing glasses, you will not make it so that you 0:20:40.480,0:20:47.200 don‘t need glasses and you will not make it so that your vision returns to normal. 0:20:47.200,0:20:53.200 How can, then, mainstream ophthalmology explain the reversal of my eyesight from minus 5 diopter 0:20:53.200,0:20:59.280 to minus 2.25 diopter? It can’t. 0:20:59.280,0:21:05.440 Anyway, I lived up to the age of 53 with both of my eyes requiring correction by minus 2.25 0:21:06.160,0:21:13.440 diopter lenses. That was before I accidentally stumbled upon a spontaneous and instantaneous 0:21:13.440,0:21:20.960 clarity of vision one day. Later, I researched the phenomenon to understand it in depth and 0:21:20.960,0:21:27.840 how to achieve it at will and sustainably. Earlier, I had mentioned that the Bates Method 0:21:27.840,0:21:32.960 was slow to provide even the first flashes of clear vision. At times, 0:21:32.960,0:21:39.840 it was instantaneous but, in general, it took a long time to do so. I was looking 0:21:39.840,0:21:46.160 for something in the procedure that would make it instantaneous as well as measurable. Here, 0:21:46.160,0:21:53.680 by instantaneous, I mean a single session of a few hours. Even if it is not full clarity, 0:21:53.680,0:22:01.360 the amount of clarity gained should be measurable. Measurability would enable such a procedure to get 0:22:01.360,0:22:08.720 verified under the test conditions that mainstream ophthalmology would, no doubt, insist on. 0:22:08.720,0:22:13.600 And this is what the Bates Method, despite being a brilliant procedure, 0:22:13.600,0:22:20.160 is lacking.
