Brian H. Accepts the Invitation to Recover

I thought I was a crackhead going to AA. Then someone explained what alcoholism was. Brian H. spent most of his life trying to survive without ever really understanding himself. From early arrests and crack cocaine addiction to jail cells, probation violations, and prison, Brian’s life became a cycle of destruction while he was still a teenager. By the time he landed in a Georgia jail at 6’3” and only 125 pounds, addiction was killing him. That’s where everything started to change. A hardened inmate named Melvin shared what God had done in his life and introduced Brian to the idea that he might finally be powerless over alcohol and drugs. But even after jail, meetings, sponsors, and years around recovery, Brian still couldn’t fully connect the dots. Until one Big Book study changed everything. For the first time, Brian understood the obsession of the mind, the allergy of the body, and why alcoholics are simply not like other drinkers. Recovery stopped being something he attended and became something he lived. Brian shares how the Joe and Charlie “Big Book Comes Alive” recordings became one of the most important recovery tools in his life. After first hearing them in 1991, he became a lifelong student and teacher of the Big Book, eventually helping continue the Big Book seminar tradition in South Florida for more than 16 years. As Brian says, “Recovery is an invitation.” In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Brian shares why recovery is more than abstinence, why the Big Book still matters, and how his life has been transformed through the twelve steps. The Weekend and the Judge: Kelly O. Fades into the World

She showed up to serve her last weekend in jail… drunk. That’s when everything finally changed. Kelly O.’s life didn’t fall apart all at once. It happened slowly, through grief, guilt, and a growing dependence on alcohol she could no longer control. By the time the consequences caught up, the system knew her well. DUI. Probation. Violations. And eventually, weekends in jail. But it was one weekend that everything changed. What could have been just another consequence became a defining moment. Standing in front of a judge who had seen her story unfold again and again, everything was on the line. Instead of giving up on her, she was given something else. A chance. In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Kelly shares how that moment broke through her denial, how structure and accountability led to real willingness, and how she finally conceded to her innermost self that she was an alcoholic. Today, she is present for her children, active in service, and living with a sense of peace that didn’t come overnight but came through surrender. Richard H. Reinvents Himself Through the Bedevilments

“We were having trouble with personal relationships… full of fear… unhappy…” He realized he was reading his own story. Richard H. spent most of his life reinventing himself. New places, new identities, new success. All to prove he was enough and outrun the feeling that he never truly fit in. Alcohol seemed to solve that problem. It gave him confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging. But no matter how many times he reinvented his life, the same patterns followed. Success on the outside. Emptiness on the inside. A home, a career, a family. And still, he found himself alone with his disease. Everything came crashing down in 2024. A DUI, the loss of his job, and the breakdown of his marriage forced him to confront what he could no longer deny. In early sobriety, Richard came face to face with the words from the Big Book often called the bedevilments. Trouble with relationships. Fear. Unhappiness. A sense of uselessness. For the first time, he wasn’t reading about someone else. He was reading about himself. That realization changed everything. In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Richard shares how willingness replaced ego, how asking for help became his greatest strength, and how relying on a higher power lifted the obsession to drink. Today, he is no longer trying to reinvent himself. He is learning to live honestly, one day at a time. 📌 If you or someone you love is struggling, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States.
