I want to slow the whole conversation down and name what’s actually happening: a repeatable pattern that can shape a family, a workplace, a religious system, and even a nation. When a thought becomes a belief and a belief becomes a paradigm, we start living inside a perceptual field we never agreed to, and we call it “normal.” That’s where so much confusion begins. I talk about why so many of us are suddenly fluent in this language, and why increased visibility matters. We are the most connected generation in history, and that connection is lifting the veil on abuse, coercion, and exploitation that used to stay hidden. The chaos many of us feel is not just the world falling apart, it can be order, disorder, reorder: a collective version of the healing arc we see in therapy. When parts of us were punished, mocked, or misunderstood, we learned to exile them so we could belong. Years later we look “fine,” but we’re living with an internal dismemberment we can’t quite explain. I walk you through the mental operating system that keeps this pattern running: thoughts repeat into beliefs, beliefs weave into paradigms, and paradigms become the perceptual field you live inside. We talk introjects, the outside messages you “swallowed whole” that now sound like your own inner voice. The Manual Nobody Gave You

We learned reading, writing, manners, and how to perform, yet so many of us were never taught what to do with grief, heartbreak, anxiety, or the subtle “something is off” feeling in a friendship or relationship. That gap shows up later as a weird kind of adulthood whiplash: you can be capable, resilient, and outwardly successful while still feeling empty, reactive, or stuck repeating the same patterns.  We share a simple framework I use as a holistic psychotherapist: the human operating system. We break down four connected systems that are always in conversation, whether we’re aware of them or not. The mental system holds beliefs, identity, and inherited programming that can turn thoughts into “facts.” The emotional system carries needs and relational intelligence, and we reframe feelings as data rather than drama. The physical system speaks through the nervous system, tension, fatigue, and symptoms, reminding us that the body keeps the score. And the spiritual system asks the meaning questions: purpose, wonder, inner knowing, and what wants to emerge through you.  From there, we pull everything together through integration, because healing rarely happens in just one lane. When mind, emotions, body, and meaning start working as one coherent system, awareness becomes choice, and choice becomes real freedom. Your Emotionally Illiterate World

When we don’t have language, permission, or a container for emotion, feelings don’t disappear. They go underground, then resurface as behaviors we don’t fully understand and can’t sustainably control. We zoom in on the ways emotional illiteracy shows up in real life: addiction as feelings seeking relief, rage as hurt that never got to be hurt, withdrawal and silence as feelings that gave up on being heard, and even deception as inadequacy looking for a shortcut. Then we reframe two of the biggest mental health keywords people search for, depression and anxiety. Depression can feel compressed and heavy, like grief and needs packed down for years. Anxiety can feel like fast-moving energy, rushing and catastrophizing, because it has no safe outlet. From there, we zoom out. Emotional illiteracy isn’t just personal, it scales into families, institutions, and leadership. Humans with unexamined histories are making decisions that shape companies, countries, and now artificial intelligence. If we can’t tolerate vulnerability and complexity inside ourselves, we tend to build systems that run on suppression, control, and fear. We end with the simplest, most radical practice I know: noticing. While moving between two homes and spending more time observing than producing, I kept circling one question that feels urgent right now. What is the coherent thread of being human when the world keeps shifting, and when information is everywhere all the time?  A quiet morning with coffee and a sleeping 100-pound long-haired Akita named Chance cracked it open. Getting him home took months of logistics, documents, vet visits, and anxious checklists. Chance knew none of that. He knew one thing: “I’m with my person.” That simplicity becomes a mirror for our nervous systems and our habits. We can plan and prepare, but we also tend to make life complicated in ways that drain meaning, connection, and wonder.  From there, I zoom out into the era of productivity, IQ, speed, and information and I ask what comes next. If AI can know more than us, then our advantage is not just intelligence. It is emotional intelligence, nervous system regulation, the ability to stay connected when things feel divided, and the humility to practice repair in relationships.
