Winning Another Way // Vernon Gordon
In this message, "Winning Another Way" we examine what it looks like to grieve the losses that come with change and then find the courage to move forward anyway. Drawing from 1 Samuel 16:1β2, we sit with Samuel in a moment of prolonged mourning, where God interrupts his grief with a simple but searching question: "How long will you mourn?" Samuel's attachment to Saul had become a liability, and this message names the quiet but costly patterns that keep us stuck, particularly the four expressions of codependence: the Caretaker, the Enabler, the Controller, and the People-Pleaser. Rooted in Galatians 1:10 and the backstory of 1 Samuel 13, we see that Saul lost the hand of God while trying to honor God, which means disobedience can carry good intentions, and loyalty can quietly become a missed assignment. The sermon lands on three summer practices of change, all grounded in prayer: Pausing, to give yourself permission to press pause and recover your interior life; Pruning, drawn from John 15:1β2, to release what is healthy but not best, sick and not recovering, or dead and no longer life-giving; and Praying, not as a substitute for obedience but as the posture that renews our affection for God. What you don't change, you choose.
