[S01E02] Danny Freed, Founder & CEO of Blueprint: The Clinician Is Always in the Driver's Seat

What if the best thing AI can do in a therapy room is disappear? That's the bet Danny Freed has been making for six years. And with 70,000 mental health professionals now using Blueprint, it's a bet that's paying off. In this episode of The Mental Health Coffee Break, I sit down with Danny Freed, Founder and CEO of Blueprint, the AI-assisted EHR built specifically for therapists. We get into how he built the company from scratch, why he chose clinicians, and what he actually means when he calls Blueprint an assistant rather than a co-pilot or an agent. Danny didn't start with a grand vision of disrupting billion-dollar legacy software. He started with a chatbot called Joy in 2016, saw the incentive problem with consumer mental health apps, and made a quiet pivot toward the people already in the room with patients: therapists. What followed was six years of iteration, from measurement-based care, to documentation, to a full AI-assisted EHR, each step driven by listening to the clinicians already on the platform. We talk about the real cost of therapist burnout: a full caseload, seven minutes between sessions, and notes that bleed into evenings and weekends. Danny shares the actual time savings Blueprint delivers, from roughly 15 minutes per session on documentation down to two or three. We get into why he calls Blueprint an assistant and not a co-pilot and what it actually takes to get therapists to switch off legacy systems they have been using for years. He also shares the advice he gives every founder thinking about starting a company: only do it if it is the only thing you can think about. The Mental Health Coffee Break is a podcast about the people, ideas, and technology shaping the future of mental health. Each episode is a focused 15-minute conversation with a founder, clinician, investor, or operator building something that matters in the behavioral health space. Hosted by Nans Rivat with new episodes every Tuesday.

[S01E01] Building the Mental Health System She Couldn't Find for Her Son: Hafeezah Muhammad, Backpack Healthcare:

What happens when a corporate executive cannot find a therapist for her own child on Medicaid? In 2020, Hafeezah Muhammad's 6-year-old son was struggling with his mental health. As a senior executive at a large organization, she went looking for help and could not find it. Her son was on Medicaid, and the mental health care system was simply not built for children like him. More than half of children in the United States rely on Medicaid. Most of them cannot access quality mental health care. Hafeezah left her corporate job and built Backpack, a mental health company designed specifically for the kids and families the system forgets. In this episode, we talk about: * Why children's mental health access remains a crisis in 2026 * How Backpack uses AI and technology to reduce therapist burnout * The real cost of founder mental health and what it means to ask for help * Why technology and compassion must coexist in mental health care * What a preventive mental health system for children could look like "Everyone walks around with an invisible backpack. The goal is to help lighten the load." Hafeezah Muhammad Whether you are a healthcare founder, a business leader, a parent, or simply someone who believes the mental health system needs to change, this conversation is for you.
