This Day in His-Story
The Liberty Bell is one of America's most recognizable symbols of freedom and independence. Originally commissioned in 1751 for the Pennsylvania State House, the bell bears the biblical inscription, "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." Although tradition holds that it rang to celebrate the Declaration of Independence in 1776, historians are uncertain whether it actually did. Throughout its history, the bell marked important national events before eventually cracking beyond repair in 1846. Today, it remains on display in Philadelphia as a lasting reminder of liberty, unity, and the enduring importance of defending freedom.
