Mahler once said, “A symphony should be like the world. It must contain everything.” While his First Symphony certainly contains a heck of a lot, I love this piece because it not only broadens perceptions of what classical music is, it’s also incredibly life-affirming. Mahler's Symphony No. 1 - A Breath of Fresh Air wtf is classical music   Suggested recordings: Leonard Bernstein conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (1989, live recording) Rafael Kubelik conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (album released in 2000)

Brahms’ intense inner struggles come to light through much of his music, but it’s in his Third Symphony that it seems Brahms has a bit of a breakthrough, finally asserting his true self after years of feeling like he was living in the shadows of greater artists. Discover this hidden gem of a symphony and be prepared to experience music that is both exquisitely beautiful and emotionally empowering. Brahms' Third Symphony - A Juice Cleanse for the Soul wtf is classical music   Suggested recordings: Claudio Abbado conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker (1990) Marin Alsop conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra (2007)
