Gilda’s Goes Bald

Gilda's Club Metro Detroit invites the community to join a head-shaving event, “Gilda’s Goes Bald”, to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any other organization outside the U.S. government. The event is December 3rd from 12-2 at Whiskey Taco Foxtrot in Clawson, Michigan. Root for the Gilda’s Club members, staff and community volunteers braving the shave.  There will be live music, food and drink for purchase with signature tacos and cocktails with a portion going toward Gilda’s fundraising goal.  One amazing element of the program is a couple of kids from our Teens Living with Cancer program will be stepping in to help shave heads.  Ellie, who shares her story on this episode, will be one of those amazing kids.  Gilda’s Goes Bald isn’t just a head-shaving event. The Benefits of Emotional and Social Support

Dealing with medical appointments, physical pain, medications, and all the other difficulties of being in active treatment can be a heavy load for anyone to carry. Even if you are not the one diagnosed, and you are supporting a loved one through the process it can bear the same emotional toll. It’s important to have people and safe spaces where you can just BE…Where you are given a moment to embrace however you may feel in an unfiltered, authentic way.  The shared experiences of others especially a Mental health clinician can be monumental on the journey of someone impacted by cancer. Talking to Kids About Cancer

When we think of Cancer, we often think of how it effects adults and older people, we don’t always think about how it effects children. The truth is, the majority of adults and older people who have cancer, have children in their life.  Children have parents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, grandparents, teachers and friends who may be diagnosed with cancer at some point.   The other truth is that kids get cancer too. About 10,470 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2022. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades. After accidents, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14. About 1,050 children under the age of 15 are expected to die from cancer in 2022.  With those kinds of numbers, we need to understand that cancer most certainly involves children. Introducing Gilda

Gilda Radner was the very first person ever hired to appear on NBC's Saturday Night Live. She was also one of the first celebrities who talked about, and fought her cancer diagnosis in the public eye, at a time when people just didn't talk about such things...especially women.  And unbeknownst to her, that courage and honesty helped create Gilda's Club. A place where all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. Our organization creates welcoming communities of free support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – along with their families and friends.
