Born in Sicily, he was known for his knowledge of Scripture, Greek, Latin, and sacred music, and he encouraged the liturgical traditions of Rome. He is especially associated with the conclusion of the long-running dispute over the Third Council of Constantinople, which condemned Monothelitism, the heresy that claimed Christ had only one will. Pope Leo II approved the council’s decisions and clarified that Christ possesses both a divine and a human will, united in His one Person. He also confirmed the decisions of his predecessor Pope Agatho and worked to restore communion between Rome and Constantinople. During his brief pontificate, he showed particular care for the poor, improved church music, and promoted reverence for the saints and martyrs. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
