Syyskuussa 2001, alle kaksi viikkoa WTC-iskujen jälkeen, ohikulkija huomaa Thames-joessa, Lontoossa, ajelehtivan jotain sinne kuulumatonta. Kyseessä on noin 5-vuotiaan, tummaihoisen pojan paloiteltu ruumis. Silminnäkijöiden, rikospaikan ja sormenjälkien puuttuessa poliisilla ei juuri ole johtolankoja, mutta viranomaiset jatkavat sinnikkäästi työtään tieteilijöiden avustuksella ja pian asiat alkavat edetä. Tutkinta vie poliisin Skotlannin ja Saksan kautta ensin Etelä-Afrikkaan ja lopulta Nigeriaan synkkien perinteiden, uskomusten ja rituaalien maailmaan. Heinäkuussa 1984 Pohjois-Ruotsiin lomalle lähtenyt perhe tekee järkyttävän löydön leirintäalueen pieneltä aukealta syrjäiseltä alueelta: romahtaneen teltan sisältä pilkistää ihmisen käsi. Poliisi löytää teltasta raa’an hyökkäyksen ja silmittömän väkivallan kohteena menehtyneen, ulkomaalaisen pariskunnan, mikä hämmentää tutkijoita entisestään: mikä oli voinut olla motiivi? Vuosien varrella kuulusteltiin yli tuhatta ihmistä ja potentiaalisia epäiltyjäkin oli, mutta ratkaisu antoi odottaa itseään 10 vuoden ajan, kunnes tuomittu rikollinen tunnusti teon. Lokakuussa 2020 poliisi pysäytti holtittomasti ajaneen auton Teksasissa. Kuljettajan sylissä oli vastasyntynyt vauva, jonka kuljettaja kertoi synnyttäneensä tien varressa vain hetkeä aiemmin. Sairaalassa naisen tarina alkoi kuitenkin rakoilla, kun tutkimukset osoittivat, ettei nainen ollut voinut synnyttää - itse asiassa nainen ei ollut koskaan edes ollut raskaana. Sen sijaan hän oli kuukausien ajan valehdellut asiasta kaikille läheisilleen ja kun synnytyksen aika oli tullut, oli hänen täytynyt hankkia vauva jostain, keinolla millä hyvänsä. Tutkinta paljasti käsittämättömän laajan ja kieroutuneen valheiden verkon, jonka lopputulemana oli yksi järkyttävimmistä ja raakalaismaisimmista henkirikoksista koskaan. Kuollut mies roikkumassa mangopuussa, rantaveteen väitetysti hukkunut teinityttö ja tunnistamattomaksi hakatun naisen ruumis syrjäisellä pellolla. Intian Goa tunnetaan turistien rakastamana rantaparatiisina, mutta pinnan alla piilee jotain synkempää: viimeisten vuosikymmenten aikana julkisuuteen on noussut lukuisia, hämäriä turistien kuolemantapauksia, joihin viranomaiset eivät tunnu suhtautuvan tarvittavalla vakavuudella.
